Monday Rockpile: Rockies Make First Round of Cuts

PEORIA, AZ - MARCH 02: Charlie Blackmon #70 of the Colorado Rockies celebrates his run off of a throwing error with Manager Jim Tracy #4 for a 1-0 lead over the San Diego Padres in the fourth inning during spring training at Peoria Stadium on March 2, 2011 in Peoria, Arizona. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Sunday saw the first round of cuts of Spring Training players to the minor league camp. For those of you new to MLB Spring Training, this isn't anything special or anything. Basically, the rosters are just being pared down toward the 25-man roster we're likely to see on Opening Day. Typically the players cut are the players who will end up in AA Tulsa and AAA Colorado Springs. The real surprises come when players who were shooting for a MLB job get cut.

Depending on their age and MLB track record, it could mean a lot of different things. For the younger prospect-type players, it typically just means "you're still overmatched, and we've seen what we'd like to see from you, so we're going to get you back into minor-league camp so you can get regular work with guys more at your level". For veterans trying to find their way back to the show, it could mean that the team is cutting them loose so they can try and find another team looking for their particular services.

The other interesting thing to watch for is the guys who you'd think belong in minor-league camp who DON'T get cut early. Sometimes it's just for the sake of depth for a few upcoming games, and sometimes it's indicative that they're higher on the ladder than people expected.

The caveat is that there isn't any 100% sure indication of what's going on, so try not to draw TOO much out of the cuts and timing thereof.

For the record, I'm pretty sure this is exactly how Willy Taveras' Spring Training has gone so far with the Rockies.

The more interesting cuts in my mind were as follows:

IF Hector Gomez
Gomez looked just lost this spring. It was pretty great to see him up with the big club, but it was apparent that he belongs with the minor league camp. Gomez played in 11 games in Major League camp (23AB), batting .217/.217/.348 with 3 strikeouts, 2 of which came in one game. There was some promising stuff there, but we saw a lot of rough play from Gomez, who is leading the Rockies so far with 6 errors (5 at SS, 1 at 3B). Provided he stays healthy in 2011, 2012 Spring Training with the big club will likely be a bit longer.

RHP Bruce Billings
2010 was a pretty exciting year for Bruce Billings. Alongside his 3.28 ERA, he also set the franchise longest scoreless innings streak at 39 - just 3 shy of the Texas League record. Billings split his time in AA between the rotation and the bullpen, and his future with the club will probably be in the bullpen. That's assuming there's room considering that Huston Street, Rafael Betancourt, Matt Lindstrom, and Matt Belisle are all locked up for a couple of years. In 4 relief outings this spring, Billings struck out 4, walked 2, notched a 2.25 ERA, and recorded a Save.

OF Cole Garner
This move kind of surprised me. While Spring stats don't mean much as far as competitions in the depth chart, Garner was having a pretty solid spring, batting .360/.407/.480. My guess is they want to make room for guys like Charlie Blackmon and Willy Taveras, now that the starters are staying in longer than 3 innings. What makes this a bit more surprising is that I figured that Garner and Blackmon were the next in line for the Majors after Carlos Gonzalez, Dexter Fowler, Seth Smith, and Ryan Spilborghs. Garner was added to the 40-man roster this offseason to keep him from declaring minor league free agency as well as to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. He's put up a .800+ OPS in his past 3 seasons (.894 in 2010 AAA), so I guess the early cut just kind of surprised me. As for why the organization keeps protecting him and keeping him in the minors, I can only surmise that the org views him and Blackmon as the next Seth Smith/Ryan Spilborghs tandem.

Past those guys, the rest of the moves aren't terribly surprising. Christian Friedrich, Wilin Rosario, and Casey Weathers were all cut, but given their recent injuries/recoveries from injury, it makes sense that the org would rather see the guys more likely to be in the depth mix for 2011 (Rex Brothers, Blackmon, etc).

Stewart returns as DH in Monday's 'B' game | ColoradoRockies.com: News
Ian Stewart, who jacked his knee up in the first action of the spring in a collision between himself and Carlos Gonzalez. He still could be missing Opening Day, but he's hoping to get in enough work to be in the starting lineup on April 1.

Tulowitzki's injury history puts hurt on Rockies - The Denver Post
Troy Renck puts up a piece about Tulo's injury history. Before you react strongly, Renck DOES cite that it's not a "injury history", per se.

Tulowitzki's injuries have ranged from severe to self-inflicted to fluky.

Most of us around here agree that Tulo's injury history really means "bad luck + that quad thing", but then again, Aaron Cook has experienced all kinds of absurd injuries that haven't been elbow or shoulder related. Tulo's done a lot of work with conditioning, healthy meal planning, good stuff like that. I'm sure there's reasons they haven't said "P90X" but when Renck cites muscle confusion exercises, that's probably what he means. Good stuff, Tulo.

Krieger: Look for Rocks on cloud 90 - The Denver Post
Dave Krieger gives us his yearly prediction for the Rockies: 90 wins. The article is another 2010 review/2011 preview kind of article, but Krieger tends to put together good pieces about the Rockies, especially for a guy who covers multiple sports. The positives: Strong foundation, Carney Lansford, Ty Wigginton Versatility, healthy DLR. The questionables/negatives: Chris Iannetta, whom he cites as a "solid defender and handler of pitchers" (the question mark is his offense), Fowler, 2B, and surprisingly enough, the bullpen. Maybe the Rockies will end up missing Joe Beimel more than expected. Prediction: 90 wins, Wild Card, and if the chips fall right, the NL West.

Spring preview: Rockies would welcome quick start - USATODAY.com
I know I say this a lot, but it's another review/preview article, but they all seem to uncover a gem for me to talk about. Here's my favorite:

"I think what, in the last seven years, the ballclub has had one winning April?" manager Jim Tracy says. "Obviously, you'd like to do a hell of a lot better than that."

Whoah ho ho! Look at Jim Tracy busting out that PG-rated language! He really wants to win in April! Well, you can can the potty mouth, Jimbo, we're all right there with you!

i think the big problem is he's currently on the wrong team

going into ST there wasn’t even certainty that the Rockies were going to have 5 OF on the opening day roster. And now that Stewart is hurt and they are thinking about it there’s so many solid options, and its the one position that no one is getting hurt at it seems.

MLB Trade Rumors: Offseason In Review - Colorado Rockies

Here.

The 2011 Rockies look like an improved team, if De La Rosa, Hammel, and Jhoulys Chacin are able to provide full seasons in support of Jimenez. Even if not, the bullpen looks deeper given the addition of Lindstrom and assuming good health for Street. But this offseason was about much more than 2011, as O’Dowd invested heavily in the futures of Tulowitzki and Gonzalez.

kind of a weird ST lul.

we’ve had ST baseball, now kind of waiting for the real thing. the “best shape of his life” stories have died down, now we’re just waiting for good news on the injury front.

plus, at least 4 regulars are actually AT ST right now.

I'd say he had good results

I’m not sure he had his best command today though looking at the hit batter and the walks. May be a good sign though that he can still find ways to get guys out even without his best stuff.

Well he certainly wasn't dominant

But two walks and a hit batter vs four strike outs and lots of ground outs is good with me. Held em to one run off of a sac fly.

I think it would be great

If Disney bought a baseball team solely so they could own the rights to schmoozy, post Tommy John type stories. And by great I mean awful.

This is how it ended..

Macri single to RF. Moved to 2nd on SacBunt by WillyT. Lopez singles on a fly ball to CF scores Macri. Must’ve been a long hit ball to single to CF. Or the outfield was moved in so close it would’ve normally been a pop fly out.
