Friday Rockpile: One Week Down in the Spring Process, Early Storylines Evolving

As Aaron Cook continues to struggle to get the engine going with shoulder issues that aren't neutralizing, Felipe Paulino's status with the 2011 Rockies has perhaps changed more than anybody else's in camp thus far. Paulino was likely to make the team regardless, and with only a week down in the Spring, there's no assurance yet that Cook won't be ready for a fifth starter spot to begin the year, but the longer he can't break out and make progress, the more likely it becomes that Paulino finds himself at the bottom of our rotation. He would be the favorite in a sea of other competitors, including Esmil Rogers, though Spring performance will likely have a lot to say about who winds up there.

Standard Links for the Day:

At the All Things Rockies blog, Armstrong and Troy Renck recap yesterday's game against San Francisco and provide stories on Ben Paulsen and Dexter Fowler.

Moving on to an influx of news through Thomas Harding of MLB.com, the Rockies have agreed to terms with their team control players, making everybody on the current 40 Man Roster officially under contract for the 2011 season. Details on each contract were not given in the article, but each one should be at or slightly above the league minimum, which is a touch above $414,000. Players likely to be spending significant time on optional assignment in the minors will be given split contracts, making significantly less in the lower ranks.

At the top of the page linked above is an article about Aaron Cook's injury. The inflammation in his shoulder does not seem to be getting better, and he has an appointment with team doctors today.

Finally, Harding also provides an excellent look at the Rockies and pitch-counts. Last year, the Rockies relied heavily on Ubaldo Jimenez staying in the game for as long as possible, sometimes upwards of 120 pitches. Going into 2011, Jim Tracy has already taken a lot off the shoulders of the pitchers in camp, taking extra care in enforcing their strict pitching limits. Comments from Jimenez, Cook, and other members of the Rockies pitching staff highlight where they look to be as the season unfolds in regards to their arms. Of extra priority on Harding's mind is making sure Jimenez, Jorge De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin being able to balance their strikeouts with lower pitch counts. Efficiency and strikeouts don't usually go together, but it's a good goal.

GR still has a lot to prove

Reynolds (Greg that is) has yet to demonstrate any of the performance that led the Rox to believe in and draft him. One minor league game does not overcome the multiple years of him being extremely injured or just incompetent. Unitl now he has been the biggest disappointment of any of the Rox have acquired through the draft.

I read it as ‘because tulo played two days in a row, he’ll be given two days off’. I read that yesterday too

by CentralCaliRox on Mar 4, 2011 9:17 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

I doubt this is something that would even keep Tulo out at all if this were the regular season

I think they’re just being cautious and not taking any chances. Tulo always plays the game with wreckless abandon so it’s probably best if they keep him off the field for a couple of days so he doesn’t risk making the bruise worse and have it become a bigger problem than it needs to be.

Agreed

Though certain kinds of toys (the video game type) could arguably help a team stay loose during the inevitable downtimes. It would be interesting to know what the greats of the game did for the two hours leading up to a game, both at home and on the road (someone has probably already written a book about it).

Could be interesting to do it on a mini-reward basis. You win a game, you get to have video games in the clubhouse the next day.

Everything I've ever read on motivational psychology disagrees

Small extrinsic rewards are very helpful for rewarding small steps (winning individual games) which are necessary to reach a distant major goal (winning the division, winning the world series). The major goal is and should be intrinsically motivating, but when it’s far-off in time, it helps to have small token rewards to stay on track.

NFL teams sometimes do this by having a day off to start the week following a win, or a mandatory workout following a loss.

Yup

Training dogs and training humans is frighteningly similar :-)
