Tuesday Rockpile: Don't Rush the Cook, or the Pen Gets Burned
As is becoming clear, Aaron Cook will not be 100% by the start of the season. That leaves the Rockies with two options: bringing him back on a pitch count in the Opening Day rotation and hoping the bullpen can fill in, or letting Cook take his time while Felipe Paulino et al get a shot out of the gate.
While Cook has been in the Opening Day rotation for five consecutive seasons, the distinction must be considered fairly hollow for the veteran. Pitching depth exists for these situations, and if Cook is ready to join mid-April, we will have all forgotten he wasn't there in early April. Dave Krieger echoes these thoughts while chiming in on the Rockies:
"For a team that hopes to contend for a division title over a six-month season, it makes zero sense to rush Cook through a truncated spring training and risk a recurrence of arm trouble when the Rocks have viable alternatives to be their fifth starter in April." -Dave Krieger
All in favor? That's what I figured. He did throw on flat ground and work up to 90 feet distance, but that's a long way from a 100-pitch outing. At this point, rushing Cook into the OD rotation will do nothing but put pressure on his arm and the pen behind the 8-ball in early April.
An extreme dark horse to take over that spot in April isJohn Maine, who finally gets his first shot for the Rockies tomorrow. Upon his initial signing, it appeared he would opt out in April if he didn't make the team instead of reporting to Colorado Springs. Now, he is "ready to do whatever he can to contribute in Colorado."

Then consider he went to high school AND college with Seth Smith. They were both drafted in the second round as outfielders, one season apart. After flailing in the minors, Head will try to revive his pitching ability. According to Jack Etkin, he showed "average velocity with potential for plus-velocity" in his tryout, so why not?

Adjustments by the Freak - The Hardball Times THT's Steve Sommer shows convincingly that Tim Lincecum's velocity is on a downward slope over the past three years, also restating that a loss of velocity tends to increase ERAs. The Freak's stubbornness in this trend is evident in his decision simply to throw the fastball less. It makes sense, but if Lincecum continues to lose more on his fastball, it will reach a breaking point where relying more on offspeed stuff no longer salvages his ERA.

Interesting piece on Field
I was surprised to see that he popped 15 HR’s last season in just 124 games. That’s a lot of spark in a bat for a guy his size.

That’s 8 guys for 6 positions.
Can all 30 teams just agree to have one more week of spring training
and then start the season?

Along the lines you are thinking
Does it make more sense to start the season earlier have the the potential for really cold, snowy weather in certain locations with the payoff being that the playoffs are done before November or have the current system with sometimes bitter cold playoff games?
"My eyes! The goggles do nothing!" - Rainier Wolfcastle
Not that I'm really advocating moving the season up
but when would you be more comfortable with cold weather impacting games? the first 10-15 of the year or the World Series?
"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."
--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
Also, don't they try to schedule it
so that teams in particularly cold locations play more road games early on? or did I make that up??

--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
I would rather see March/April games impacted for sure.
We shouldn’t have to sit around wondering if it is going to snow for Game 5 of the WS. Not even football (until 2014) subjects its championship game participants to the potential for miserably cold weather.
"My eyes! The goggles do nothing!" - Rainier Wolfcastle
I would agree with this
though seeing baseball played in snow looks totally badass, as well as it’s unclear how much it impacts stuff since it presumably affects both teams equally and I really doubt one team is much more suited for playing in the harsh weather.

I didn't take a single photo. LAME!
It was a blast but really hectic since I brought my 2 (almost 3 year old) and 9 month old. I barely got to catch the games I did but they were great. Went Friday (to Goodyear) and Sunday to Talking Stick. I might do a fanpost but I don’t really have much to share other than it was just a great time. Going on Sunday was epic. Renck said it was the biggest crowd ever. It felt like opening day almost. There was purple everywhere! I mean around town not just at the field. There is a lot of fan enthusiasm out there.
Going to Goodyear and then to Talking Stick was like night and day. I realize the factors between the two scenarios, new stadium vs. old, team in a down decade vs. team with lots of potential etc. but there is a really engaged and enthusiastic fan base for the Rockies. It’s very exciting to see. I sat next to a lady lady who also been to a Giants home game and she said the Rox fans blew the World Series champs fan base away. It’s great to see this happening.

Outstanding find
Try turning off all the teams and just watching where the colored dots (the eight playoff teams) appear each season. You can see a clear pattern develop as to the general area where those dots appear on the graph. Then go back and select the Rockies and watch where their dots appear. Overall, we are moving in a general direction toward the zone where the playoff teams are. (Even last season we were much closer to that (playoff) zone than our 83 wins will have you believe.)

Yea you want to be in that
bottom right quadrant where you score the most runs and allow the least. Early on we had inflated amounts of both. With the humidor we moved more towards the middle and with a strong roster we’re definitely trending in the right direction. Between injuries and underplaying our Pythagorean record last season we definitely do appear closer than W/L record suggests (though that’s nothing new for our glass-half-full fanbase).
There’s actually a ton of interesting things. Teams like the Marlins, Twins, and Yankees have incredibly tight trails. The Diamondbacks are just all over the place. You get to clearly see that season where the Mariners invested a ton in defense and their runs allowed drops, and how the Cardinals took a big step back only to win the World Series…

I feel bad
I talked to a guy last night in Denver. I convinced him to come join the PR and enjoy talkinga bout the Rockies. He works at 104.3 THE FAN there in Denver. He told me that he would try to promote the PR over the air and everything like. He said he would try to get a couple of the guys on here to promote the site and stuff like that. Problem is, as soon as a got on here to sign up and stuff. HE GOT THAT VIRUS and it basically made his computer useless. I gave all that information that was presented yesterday. I don’t know what he will do now. He won’t talk to me like it was my fault. There was a chance to get the word out to more people to get involved with us and it does that.
Well that's cool.
I believe in the future, the reality of the present, the sweet memories of the past, living is more than breathing, spring will came if we wait, patiently, believing, hoping. But the winter is long and we must endure its cold. I believe in the future, the reality of what is to come, the sweet memories that are yet to occur, probably, eventually, someday.
And I believe in hope and anticipation: the idea that we’ll meet again, and counting down the days until we do.

The Astros lost Jason Castro for the year with an ACL tear.
They’re looking for catching help, with only journeyman Huberto Quintero

Very reasonable suggestion
The Astros are in bad shape at C, and there are very few organizations that have the depth the Rockies do…
Although, I would modify the suggestion a bit…

As awesome as that would be
In reality I’m not so sure what we could get of any sort of value for McKenry or Paganozzi or Moeller. Any of the three are only marginally better then the options that the Astros already have so they probably wouldn’t be willing to trade much of anything anyway… Ed Wade aside…

That foul ball sounded like a great hit! You know, this all-or-nothing Todd seems win/win for us, in a pragmatic sense. If he succeeds, great; if he blows up, then he might be obliged to retire. Is that a terrible thing to say?

I think he thought that the ball had gotten away from the catcher...
but it was just dropped and kept it in front of him.

It doesnt say caught stealing
I’m pretty sure it was probably a ball that got away and then the catcher was able to retrieve the ball and throw him out.

Ringolsby was interviewed by Mike Rosen today
Apparently Ubaldo prefers Iannetta catching him.
Not just meant as a “I LOVE IANNETTA” thing, I just think it’s an interesting tidbit in the “Latin Pitchers NEED Latin Catchers” debate
by Andrew Martin on Mar 8, 2011 1:54 PM MST reply actions 1 recs
I definitely see how that is overstated
I do still wonder if it matters for new, adjusting pitchers.
Ultimately, it’s probably just a case by case basis and you’ll find enough Latin pitchers who feel they benefit from it, and enough who don’t care either way…
"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."
--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
I also wonder
if this had any impact in the team’s decision not to bring in true competition for Iannetta… probably not but still

Chacin ruled the world when Phillips was catching him last year.
Right after they both got called up, as I recall.
"If you can't do something smart, do something right."
What else is he going to say? I miss Olivo and Torrealba?
Ubaldo isn’t that type of guy
He could have just said "All of our catchers are great"
which wouldn’t have left Morales, Panyahtzee, McKenry, Pacheco or anybody out. Maybe he really does prefer Iannetta…
