PrintEsmil Rogers pitched like a fifth starter this time. In other words, shaky through five and a two thirds innings, but just well enough to keep the Rockies in the game and give his team a chance to win, rather than the ace-like performance he put out in his prior start. Thanks in large part to a three run home run from Troy Tulowitzki, that level of performance was strong enough for Rockies to beat the Mets 5-4.
So there are a couple of ways we can take the narrative here, the first one is to coolly look at the facts and realize that winning this one was what we call, in the parlance of our times, "lucky". It was a one run win on the road, our starter couldn't find home plate even if the umpire's zone was consistent, and there were several key members of the lineup that went zero for something.
The second way to take the game narrative, however, might be a bit more meaningful for Rockies fans, as this was a team victory. When the starting pitcher flagged, the defense and bullpen were there to back him up. While large parts of the lineup struggled at first, the team leaders, Tulowitzki and Todd Helton carried the rest on their backs. The rest did what they could, though: Jonathan Herrera and Chris Iannetta battled for walks, getting on and creating scoring opportunities or just flipping the lineup respectively. Okay, so Herrera also battled for hits. And for stolen bases. His wizard skills are strong. Seth Smith, Carlos Gonzalez, Jose Lopez and Ryan Spilborghs hacked away and made (or tried to make) contact hoping to get something solid, and while there was a lot of failure in that bunch, once Spilborghs did connect, and his solo home run proved to be the difference.
Four wins in a row, all on the road... things are different in 2011. It's likely silly to think this, as it's certainly confirmation bias after an 8-2 start to the season, but it just feels like there's a better uhm... "chemistry" to the Rockies this year. Oh man, I said it. Now my baseball blogger license is going to get suspended again.

Exactly. The Rockies have played terribly in April regardless of their competition for as long as I can remember.
Now, we’re staging comebacks and winning close games. It’s a delightful world of difference.

Can't believe this is Rockies' baseball in April.
It’s like watching a completely different team. Not even clicking on offense and still able to execute enough to win — gasp — road games. The thought of not having to play catch-up during the summer months is just smile inducing.
Just think of how much fun this could be when we get replacement level hitting from a third baseman and CarGo gets some footing in the three hole.
Obviously some key pitching has yet to be healthy too. Stoked.

I just want to say two things.
Thing the first – it is really awesome to turn on the TV and settle down for dinner and EXPECT the Rockies to win. It’s April, on the road, against a team we NEVER beat on the road, and our fifth starter’s on the mound – but this team just feels like a winner when they take the field. That’s a lot of fun.
Thing the second – I am not sure anyone else saw this, and I am not sure if this validates the existence of the ‘Toyota Talk’ inning on Root Sports or is further evidence that it needs to go away forever. You be the judge. I’m talking about the person that texted this gem: “Carlos Gonzalez is the greatest defensive outfielder in Rockies history! Right up there with fielding wizards Brad Hawpe and Matt Holliday!”

Really, it’s the Rockies announcers fault for always (ALWAYS) singing the praises of Hawpe as a right fielder, just because he had a strong arm.

Nobody is claiming that Helton is in Babe Ruth’s or Ted Williams’ class as a hitter. But it is undisputable that their numbers would also be significantly less without them playing in the home parks they played in.

Maybe but consider this.
Back in Helton’s Prime, there was a debate raging in baseball between who was better between Pujols and Helton (much like we see now with Tulo and Hanley). From 1999 to 2004 he was a lock for .330+ Average, 30+ Homeruns, .420+ OBP, 570+ SLG and 6.5 to 7 WAR Seasons. He was a monster basically, even if you took into account Coors Field (Humidor was installed in 2002 by the way, and Heltons till had great seasons in 2003 and 2004).
The shame with Helton was his back. It truly eroded much of the talent he had, and cut his prime short by at least 5 years. Had his back held up, I think we could easily put him in a list of the top 10-15 hitters in History, no question.

It’s going to be for one game against a team that likely has a limited book on him and it will be his regularly scheduled day to pitch. I guess I don’t see it as that big a deal for a one-off start.

It’s not uncommon, especially with young pitchers. The Rockies don’t really have any better options. I’d rather see him than pitchers who have been even more erratic within the last week.

Well, that's one spring training game
I saw Ubaldo get rattled pretty good when the White Sox got a few lucky hits in a spring game this year. He’ll be nervous, sure. But if you’re looking for a pitcher to fill in that you know won’t get rattled with a runner on and Alfonso Soriano waving his bat around, you’ll be restricted to looking in the big leagues.

Correct.
Due to the double header, if we don’t call someone up one of our starters will have to pitch on short rest.
So we’ll probably call somebody up to make one start.

Actually mentioned it on twitter last night. He pitched yesterday, so he’d have five days rest, is already on the 40 man, he is much better than any of the AAA pitchers, and he’s already been optioned this season, so no additional options would be used. He’d probably be up in September anyway….why not?

He’s 24. He’s older than Chacin, and he’s been on the 40 man running with the big club in Arizona for a while. He’d be less likely to get rattled than, say, Chad Bettis or Greg Reynolds in 2008.

Reyes is a perennial All-Star level talent.
Herrera is an awesome, unexplainable pesky hitter. I love him, but I still choose Reyes.
As much as I think Reyes would be great for this team talent wise (imagine how many triples he’d get in Coors), I still think every good team needs a pesky out like Herrera.

Agree with the comments in the game thread about using Giambi in the 9th. I realize that means you burn both Giambi and Stewart (who would go in to play 3B), but this is Jim “Win it in 9 Innings” Tracy. If you’re going to carry Giambi on the roster (something I’m not very supportive of, BTW), you have to use him there.

I kind of admire what the Friars did last year
They knew that had one last shot with Gonzalez in a SD uniform, and they played their asses off all the way to the finish. But their success was based on the notion that those workhorses in the bullpen could make it through the home stretch on four bald tires and a liter of gasoline, and they clearly couldn’t. Are these really the Rockies in April?
Is this really Tulo in April? I couldn’t be happier with the way this team has started. They seem to be doing just enough to win on this roadtrip (except for the 14 inning game) whereas last year they always seemed to do just enough to lose.
Don’t know if the fast start is part of the old “as Tulo goes, so go the Rockies” theory but whatever it is, this is the best I’ve ever seen a Rockie team look in April and it’s not even close. 8-1 since losing Ubaldo!?!?! Are you kidding me? I know it’s early but this team looks damn good right now.

has him hitting 81 dingers, and 194 RBI for the season.
