Know Your Foe #6: The Reigning Champs Take On The Best In Baseball
San Francisco Giants (8-7, 2nd in the NL West to the 1st Place Colorado Rockies)
2010 Record vs Colorado: 9-9
Last Series vs Rockies: 9/24-9/26 (W 2-1 in Coors Field)
At this point in the season, the Rockies were already in free fall from contention, sitting at 82-71, 4.5 games behind the 87-67 Giants. While some among the Coors Faithful were still hoping for a 2007-esque Rockies resurgence, it was apparent the Rockies were nearly out of gas while the Giants were still fighting with the San Diego Padres for the division lead. Game 1 of the 3 game series featured Tim Lincecum vs Jhoulys Chacin, with Lincecum going 8, punching out 9, allowing 2 hits and no walks. Chacin went 7IP, striking out 8, walking 3, allowing 3 hits and a Pat Burrell home run. The most meaningful play for the Rockies was an Eric Young Jr single to RF that drove in Seth Smith from 3B.
Game 2 was a 10-9 shootout where the Rockies were able to do some damage to Barry Zito and then kill their bullpen 1 run at a time. This was the game where Troy Tulowitzki had a .966 WPA on the game - essentially meaning he WAS the win. Huston Street was pretty great over 2 innings of 1-hit ball to get himself the win.
Game 3 was a bit more cut and dry. Matt Cain pitched a complete game, striking out 8, allowing 2 runs, and the Rockies lost 2-4. You know, what we'd expect out of a Matt Cain matchup.
Last Series Results: W 2-1 @ Arizona, W 2-1 vs Los Angeles Dodgers
The player of note for me right now is Brandon Belt. After tearing up the minors and named the Opening Day 1B, it's looking like Belt might need some remedial time in AAA. He's batting .217/.321/.304 (.625 OPS) so far this season, and after an 0-for-4 day on Sunday with 2 punchouts, he's looking a bit lost. If you listen to this week's Purple Row Radio, Grant touches on that a bit - great strike zone recognition, lack o' results. SHOULD Belt be optioned to AAA Fresno, Cody Ross would be returned to the OF and it would get the Aubrey Huff 3-ring Circus out of the corner. I was personally looking forward to the circus.
But it's not all struggling prospects and cartoon fielding (although the cartoon fielding is a much larger issue than merely Huff), much as we'd hope for. Several guys are batting really well, namely most of their starting lineup and also Mark DeRosa. I'll post the matchups and batting stuff after the jump.
In the meantime, if you weren't painfully aware, McCovey Chronicles is the Giants' SBNation Blog. If you decide to visit...well, I'll let you figure it out.
Andres Torres was one of the overall best players for the Giants in 2010, posting a .268/.343/.479 batting line, stealing 26 bases, hitting 16 homers, and playing -according to UZR- absolutely elite CF defense (21.2 UZR). Torres graded out as a 6.0 fWAR player (4.4 bWAR), and was an absolute hero in the 2010 WS, posting a .984 OPS in the World Series.
Torres was placed on the DL retroactive to April 10 with Achilles soreness. While I never wish injury on an opposing player, I won't say I'm going to shed a tear not having to deal with this guy in this series at Coors Field. Especially when he's getting on base even better than last season.
Speaking of the DL, Barry Zito just got sent to the DL for the first time in his career with a sprained foot. He's not pitching this series, but it's time to test the Giants' depth, as Ryan Vogelsong was promoted from AAA Fresno to take Zito's roster spot.
Folks, it's a tired bullpen. Let's wear them down.

Know Your Foe, my favorite posts of the week
Just looking at BABIPs, seems like the Gints have gotten a bit fortunate. But at least two of the pitching matchups certainly seem to favor them. But maybe the six IP their bullpen threw today can come back to bite them.
Further, I’d argue that while the Rockies’ schedule has not been difficult, the Gints’ haven’t exactly faced a murderers row either. The Dodgers are decidedly pedestrian this season (I mean, even we swept a two game set), Pujols was still in his big slump, and no Holliday, when they faced the Cards.
2011 won’t rise or fall on this series in any event, but managing to take two of three would be awesome.
I would like to see the Brandon Belt experiment continue through Wednesday, though.

Not here to troll
Just wanted to say that if you look at the early SF schedule, the fact that so much is on the road is a factor. Also, I think that no matter how bad LA is, both they and SF always manage to step it up for those matches. A lot of SF fans have been of the mindset that the Giants schedule to open the season is brutal.

Honestly I expect the Rockies and Giants
To play a fairly even season series this year, and for the division title to come down to who does a better job of pounding on the teams they are supposed to. The Rox have done a better job of that so far, but we all know the Giants’ rotation gives them the capability of ripping off a few 13-3 runs before the season is over.
So I’m really excited about this series, and hope to get to all three games. But I’m not going to get too depressed if we lose it, or too giddy if we win it. It’s just Round 1 in a long bout.

Exciting
I am looking forward to this series. Both teams have recently had a win streak snapped (stupid Cubs), but the Rox are the better team right now. The team seems to be clicking very well. Let’s keep up this winning mentality and show those doubters we are ready for anyone! Go Rockies!
So pumped up for this.
We’ve got two rough matchups, but I’m happy we’re facing the Giants top 3 starters. It’s too bad Torres is out; I’d like to beat the Giants at full strength. This is a big test for the team.. I’m sure they’re just as pumped as we are. GO ROX!

I'll be very happy with a 3-3 record this week
The games in Miami don’t look easy either (facing Josh Johnson on Sunday).
It’s a shame that Sanchez isn’t up first, because I think that’s the game we have a good shot at getting into the bullpen. They should be rested again by then unless something happens to the Freak.
The Rockies have such a great record in day games (which is nice as its all I can watch), I think they’ll beat Cain for once.
actually, Johnson goes Monday against the Dodgers
We get Anibal and Volstad, and both have been bad this year. The best pitcher we face is Vazquez, and Chacin faces him, so we have a good shot of winning each game if the road demons truly are exorcised

To be fair
It’s not really a universal McCoven opinion that the Rockies can never be the Giants’ rival. And I personally think that the level of consternation over Giants/Rockies series shows that it definitely is a rivalry at this point (though not to the same degree as Giants/Dodgers).

Greetings..I love the way that they said that the Giants bullpen was warming up 5 hours and 40 minutes before game time.
This was them talking…I love how they think that the baseballs are still juiced. Will they never get over themselves. Don’t worry, we will have a lead, throw Raffy out there, put them to sleep with the wait, and jump on them the next half inning and blow them out of the water.
giants fans are the reciprocal of cubs fans
The Cubs are always terrible, but their fans always believe they will be awesome and talk like it.
The Giants almost always field a strong team, but their fans always expect the worst. At least, that’s my experience.

And even if Lopez is struggling, he did tattoo two balls hard yesterday.
Which is at least one more than Stewart’s hit hard all season.

Against Timmeh is not where you want Stewie to try to find his feet
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
I can understand that rational, and Stewie certainly hasn't done anything to instill confidence
but the same excuse was used yesterday (can’t hit against Demster). Well if he doesn’t ever get the opportunity to get back in a groove, pretty soon you can say he doesn’t hit well against anyone, so don’t ever put him out there. I just think he has shown in the past that he has too much talent to waste (and he was a first round draft pick).
Free Ian Stewart!!
by Cheeseheadroxfan on Apr 18, 2011 3:42 PM MDT up reply actions
Well, the first round pick argument is irrelevant, for one....
/gregreynolds
But all joking aside, he hasn’t hit well against anyone. We sat him against Dempster, and then throw him against Casey freaking Coleman, who just made him look silly.
Yes, he has too much talent to waste. At this point, I’d advocate sending him to AAA to get regular ABs to try to re-harness either his talent or his confidence. Because right now he has neither, and the Rockies have a division lead to protect.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
I would agree
Can’t understand Tracy’s thinking on this one.
Sending down to AAA worked well last year for both Fowler and Iannetta
Gotta think just sitting on the bench is really messing with Stewies confidence
Free Ian Stewart!!
by Cheeseheadroxfan on Apr 18, 2011 3:58 PM MDT up reply actions
I can sorta undertanding Tracy's thinking, for one reason
Lansford is the ML hitting coach. Part of the whole idea of hiring Lansford was putting him back together with Stewart, and sending him down eliminates that benefit.
I’m pretty sure Tracy’s patience is running out, and that Stewie gets like one or two more starts (maybe against Sanchez and in FLA) before he gets sent down.
I don’t know that that’s optimal, but I’m pretty sure that’s the club’s operative thinking.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Well it is a long season
and the time will come when we could use Ian’s power bat in the lineup. Now would seem to be the time to get whatever is wrong with him corrected, while the team is doing well without him. In any event, Lopez is just a one year rental. We need Ian long term.
Free Ian Stewart!!
by Cheeseheadroxfan on Apr 18, 2011 4:08 PM MDT up reply actions
this is DOD's decision, no?
anyway I agree with what you said about the Lansford situation. Lansford fixed CDI (and Fowler) when they went down last year…if the club trusts Lansford, they will probably stick with Stewart longer than normal at the MLB level. At some point though they’ll send him down.
by black_knight101 on Apr 18, 2011 4:12 PM MDT up reply actions
Well yeah, it's DOD's decision, but he doesn't make it in a vacuum
I’m pretty sure DOD and Tracy talk at least 4-5 times a week.
I think if the Rox weren’t performing so well otherwise, you’d already see something take place. But there’s a lot to be said for a steady hand, and that goes for rosters as well as lineups.
If the Rox saw what looked like major improvement in Stewie’s BP, for instance, I have no doubt they’d insert him in more games. Or, if there was clearly no progression at all, they would have sent him down by now.
Frankly, we’re just in a really good position right now, where we can afford to give him more time to work with Carney and not have it cost us wins where it matters.

Mortensen can go multiple innings and he is here for just one day
No sense bringing up a stud rookie for one day of mopup duty

Plus, he's not on the 40-man.
Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.

Mortensen can go longer.
Rex Brothers is more of a short inning guy.

I should be this in the game thread but there isn't as much traffic here
prediction on Rogers’ line tonight?
20 bucks says Timmeh's headed to Boulder after Wednesday's game
The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.
10 bucks says Timmeh's head is already in Boulder
It’s been there for the last 21 minutes.

I love people/fans/experts
who dismiss a record based on who a team has played. The giants complain about our “weak” schedule? The Cardinals are the only team they have played who is even .500. The Phillies? The mighty Nationals and 1 game against the Marlins. No one says a word. How about the Reds? They have yet to play a team above .500 and they are only 9-6.
This is called the Major Leagues. Every team is good enough to beat another on any given night. A 12-3 record is a damn good record against any schedule.

The Giants have played a terrible schedule.
When they faced the Cardinals, they didn’t even have Holliday and Pujols was in a slump. The Cardinals also dropped the potential game winning flyout in one of the games.

It's entirely too early in the season to even USE that argument.
Because, if the Rockies hadn’t beaten the teams they’ve played, all but the Mets would HAVE winning records.
I suppose, using the same logic, the Rockies would still be playing a weak schedule if they win two-of-three in this series.
You know, because the Giants would be under .500 too — lame.
Weird that Belt disappeared from the Giants lineup..
But it makes sense. Nate Schierholtz plays GREAT defense in RF. And he hits well here (IIRC). Don’t want Huff AND Burrell’s defense in this outfield.
