Twitter / @Jim Armstrong: Alfredo amezaga here...mor ...
It looks like Clayton Mortensen has been optioned to AAA Colorado Springs and UTIL Alfredo Amezaga has been brought up to fill in the void created by Ian Stewart's demotion and Ty Wigginton's recent injury. No official moves have been announced as of yet.

What????
Does this mean 2 people will be called up? Wiggy is on the DL so we should just get a call up right? Why is Mortensen being sent down too? And really Amezega come on we can do better than that
Wiggy isn't going to the DL..
Yet anyway.

Anddd Renck confirmed it about 10 minutes ago.
bq.Yes, Wigginton avoids DL. So the move is straight up Mortensen for Amezaga. Wigginton is tougher than truck stop jerky.

but is he tougher than Olivo?
didn’t he pass a kidney stone between of a game he was catching last year?
He should be able to avoid it
Btw, Amezaga is up to provide versatility. Nothing wrong with that..

No I just
really like EYJ and CN. Two guys I really like and then when guys like Johnny Herrera and Almezaga get changes ahead of them it bothers me.

From Alanna’s Twitter,
ROCKIES PURCHASE CONTRACT OF INFIELDER ALFREDO AMEZAGA; Club Options RHP Clayton Mortensen to AAA, Designates RHP Alan Johnson
Purchase contract? So the Rox ARE going to pay him $750k?

I think it's pro rated based on games on the 25 man
Or something like that

I'm not really sure what that means.
He’ll get paid by the game?

You have to purchase the contract
to get placed on the 40 man roster I believe. He was just getting paid to play AAA but by purchasing his contract he will be placed on 40 man roster and paid the MLB minimum which is $425,000. He will be paid $2423.45 per game I believe.

I figured out that Vernon Wells is getting paid
$164,462.08 per game to bat .178 with 1 HR this season. (26+ MILLION)

While you're at it, calculate
How much Ryan Dempster got paid per pitch last night. The Cub hater in me wants to know…

In 3 games he made more money than
Peter Bourjas (Angels Starting CF) will make all year

Prorated
means that he gets paid based on the number of days he spends on the active roster. The MLB minimum salary is $425,000, but they only get that amount if they’re on the roster for the entire season. If he’s on the active roster less than that, it’s basically:
MLB minimum salary / number of days in the season x number of days on the roster
I think that’s how it’s calculated, anyhow.

we would have to get something else in that deal wouldn't we?
that just wouldn’t be fair return for Alan Johnson

I know its all about options, or lack thereof
But I hate to see Mortensen go back down. Maybe his stuff would have held up, maybe it wouldn’t have. But I hate to see an 8-inning scoreless streak broken via demotion.
I know the guy looks like he arrived at the park on a refugee raft, but he was a sandwich pick back in the day. Will be interesting to see what he does from here on.
Bullpen was crowded, infield needed somebody.
Mortensen was the odd man out. I really liked the shape of the bullpen with a long man.. But the the team needed some more fielders/hitters.

How many options does he have left?
Will they be able to call him back up soon?

He should have one in 2012. Obviously has one this year.

Why?
#Rockies MGR Jim Tracy announces in pregame press conference that RHP Esmil Rogers will be used out of the bullpen this series.
@CentralCaliRox
He's not going to make a start in almost a week.
After the day off Monday, our 1-4 will be back on normal 4 day rest

I guess the Rox will just skip his next start
And insert him in the bullpen for this series. The 2 days off kinda made things weird.
@CentralCaliRox
by CentralCaliRox on Apr 29, 2011 4:06 PM MDT up reply actions
Yep.
With the off days Wednesday and Thursday, and another on Monday, the Rockies won’t need a fifth starter for a few games. Better to use him out of the bullpen than have him sit out that long.
This also, by the way, could be part of why Mortensen got optioned.
