Monday Pebble Report: Nuts Roast the Blaze, Drillers Lose Pitchers' Duel
AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox (16-22, 3rd in the PCL Pacific North)
Sky Sox 5, Storm Chasers 12
Unpleasant day for Greg Reynolds, who went 5 innings and gave up 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks, only striking out 2. Worse day for Sean White, who made it 1.2 innings and gave up another 7 runs of his own. Edgmer Escalona (he of the 1.04 ERA) and Rex Brothers finished the game, tossing a combined 2.1 scoreless innings in this Sky Sox loss. Offensively, the Sky Sox managed 11 hits and 4 walks, including 2 hit days from Eric Young, Jr, Charlie Blackmon, Brad Emaus, and Jordan Pacheco. Eric Young is batting .363 on the season with 14 stolen bags and only one CS.
AA Tulsa Drillers (20-15, 1st in the TEX North)
Drillers 0, Travelers 1
Cory Riordan was good. He was very good. Riordan went 6, struck out 6, walked 1, scattered 7 hits and allowed only one run. Garrett Richards had a perfecto going until the top of the 5th when catcher Lars Davis lined a 2-out single to LF. Richards went 8 innings on 102 pitches, struck out 9 to only 1 walk. Matt Meyer struck out the side in the 9th.
A+ Modesto Nuts (18-19, T5th in the CAL North)
Nuts 22, Blaze 2
Crazy game for Modesto, as the Nuts had a safety in the 1st, 2 field goals in the 2nd, 2 more safeties in the 4th, and a touchdown, extra point, and field goal in the 9th.
Seriously though, the Blaze allowed 22 runs, 18 earned, while committing 3 errors to further the Nuts' cause. Every starter for the Nuts had multiple hits except for Delta Cleary Jr who went 1-for-4 with 3 walks. Josh Rutledge, Mike Zuanich, and Kent Mathes all had 4-hit days, Nolan Arenado hit 2 bombs, and Jose Gonzalez hit 2 doubles and turned out another album of excellent acoustic guitarwork.
On the pitching side of things, Nick Schnaitmann pitched 6.1 innings, allowing both of the Blaze runs while striking out 3 and walking 1. Alan DeRatt and Sheng-An Kuo cleaned up the rest of the game with 2.2 scoreless innings.

Maybe I should start commenting on my disappointment
in certain prospects more often. I think it was about a week ago that I said something about Arenado being a little bit off this year. I know Modesto seems to supress hitting, but it still wasn’t what I had hoped for from him. Since then he has hit 3 bombs. I wonder if this would work for guys on the big club, hmmmm.

hey, Matzek looked better-ish last week. We'll see what he does tonight.

This is big
If we can get progess in a few straight starts, we have a chance to get a trend developing. Bouncing back and forth between bad starts and decent ones does us no good.
