This is a game the Rockies *should* win. They are facing a winless lefty with way too many walks, way too few strikeouts, and a problem with home runs. He is one of just six MLB starters with a FIP and ERA over 5.00, and in his only career start at Coors Field, he was chased in the third inning after allowing seven runs (four earned). And this season, there was this:
The Rockies send out Jhoulys Chacin, the second head of their quiet two-headed monster this season. The right-hander is 3-1 in six career appearances with a 2.01 ERA against Arizona in his career. Both that ERA and wins mark is his best against any MLB with at least two appearances.

JDLR contract
given the nature of the options and the timeframe for Tommy John, is it possible that he just pitched his last game under contract for the Rox? I don’t know how player options work with injuries, or if they are affected at all. I assume he’d want to exercise his Year 3 option now for sure…

The Rockies must have insurance on this contract, yes?
So we’re not going to take a huge hit for the rest of this season/early next season, I’d think, monetarily. Obviously it’s a huge hit on the field.

obviously he will exercise it now if he can, just don’t know if a catastrophic injury impacts the option. I would assume not, but just curious.

unless there was some unusual clause in it that strips the option if he’s injured or something – but im not sure that’s totally possible or if the players union would allow it..

Often
Options will come with games played or innings pitched stipulations to protect a club in a situation like this. It may or may not be the case.
But, at this point, I don’t give a rats ass. I’m much more worried about this season.

Doubt it, barring a release (which I wouldn't count on at all).
DLR will get surgery, best case scenario back at the end of 2012, he’ll accept his 2013 option year and then his rebound then probably determines if we keep him for 2014.

Far from ideal, but I guess it could be much worse. For him, anyway. Not very good at all for us.

looks like he’s been better lately. Reynolds and Mort have looked good so far, and cook should be back soon, however I can’t help but wonder if we are looking for a Pitcher come the trade deadline instead of some offense.

I just got back from the day game
I knew it was bad for Jorge the moment it happened. There was a long conversation on the mound with Dac and CDI, he threw a pitch and then Iannetta was running out to the mound waving to the trainer in the dugout.
I’ve now seen Cook’s last start before his blood clot issue in ‘04, Jason Hirsh break his leg in ’07 and DLR’s last start before Tommy John surgery now.
I have nothing further to say that I can type on PR.

I’ve seen 3 pitchers get hurt, that’s a .001 batting average, and I’m 3-0 this season, but yeah, my timing has sucked.

I was with you at Coors for those last two....
Hirsh’s was unreal – he continued to pitch – and well – with a broken leg.
Today, I sensed Jorge was uncomfortable that whole inning. He slowed things down so much it looked like he really didn’t want to throw. Now we know why.
Damn.
Well this news sucks..
The last time we lost a lefty starter to TJ was in 2007, and we all know how that turned out.

Depends on how important we feel a lefty starter is.
Friedrich isn’t ready, for now the rotation will have to be Jimenez/Chacin/Hammel/Mortensen/Reynolds (with Cook replacing him in a bit). I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we wait to target any available LHPs until we see where that takes us.

I don't think no LHS is the problem here
For me its the lack of trust that Mortensen and Reynolds can keep it up, and Cook can pitch like he did in 2008.

About JDLR...
Sad news. But I’m not calling it quits for the season. Cook will be coming back – and Mortenson has been strong in every outing thus far.
I don’t know if Mortenson/Cook can match JDLR, but the idea is that they should do well enough to be comparable.
I know some of us doubt Mortenson, but it’s been great in each of his outings.
Oh I don't think we are calling it quits.

Sure, but both of those can be skewed by small sample sizes

Has anyone where ever been in the mountain ranch club?
It’s the only place in Coors Field I haven’t sat. I’ve done club level, suites, rock pile, etc…but never the Mountain Ranch place.
I remember our mascot Barny, er…Dinger, used to throw rolls from that place into the crowd.
