Know Your Foe #20: Rockies Head to Chavez Cemetery

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 04: Pitcher Ted Lilly #29 of the Los Angeles Dodgers looks down after giving up a solo home run to Geovany Soto of the Chicago Cubs in the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium on May 4, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Los Angeles Dodgers (24-30, 4th in the NL West)

2011 Record vs. Colorado: 0-2

Last Series vs. Rockies: April 5-6 (L 0-2 @ Coors Field)

Last time the Rockies saw the Dodgers was when the Rockies were on their triumphant rise to the top of the NL West. Game 1 was a Jhoulys Chacin 7 inning gem that remained a shutout after Rafael Betancourt and Huston Street came in and did their jobs. The Rockies scored their runs by virtue of 5 hits and 2 walks, and those 3 runs were all the team needed that night.

Game 2 was far more questionable, as Jason Hammel turned in 5 innings, allowing 4 runs and 2 homers, but the Rockies were able to tag Chad Billingsley and Blake Hawksworth for 7 runs in the first 4 innings of the game. Franklin Morales pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief, Matt Lindstrom gave up a run in his inning of work to bring the tally to 7-5, but Huston Street again came in for a shaky but effective save, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.

Latest Series Results: (W 2-1 vs Florida, L 1-2 @ Houston)

After a .500 start to the season in March/April, the Dodgers have gone 10-16 in the month of May, a few wins better than the Rockies 8-19 over the same timeframe. Dodger bats have gone absolutely cold over the past month, mustering a mere .632 OPS. Pitching has been good enough, allowing a 3.65 ERA during May, but a big question mark remains at the back end of the bullpen. Jonathan Broxton, Vicente Padilla, and Hong-Chih Kuo are all on the DL still, so the Dodgers have been forced to close by committee.

It's not all bad for the Dodgers, judging by Clayton Kershaw's continued ascent to Ace status.

There's a lot good to say about Clayton Kershaw in 2011, as his 2.62 ERA is bolstered by a 2.61 FIP (2.86 xFIP) and a .282 BABIP, suggesting that his dominance isn't just smoke and mirrors, he's actually pitching this well.

Luckily, the Rockies will miss Kershaw, and hopefully can take some frustrations out against a similarly floundering Dodgers squad.
