We're just working on our 1-run record, is all.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Great win...
But I’m genuinely worried about Street and Betty. They are hittable and not dominating this year.
RafBet pretty much leads the NL in holds
And Street DOES lead the NL in saves.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Both are allowing more hits than IP...
Not good for our top two relievers.
Both barely so.
Street’s numbers are fine.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
They are OK...
But the hits and 7 HRs? Not great.
The hits overall aren't bad. The HRs are the one outlier for him
Like I said below, take even two of those HRs away, and his numbers are just fine.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Even 5 HRs in 32 IP...
Would not be fine for a closer. 7 is troubling. I agree it’s out of line with his history, but Street isn’t pitching nearly as well as his save totals and save % would indicate. He simply doesn’t dominate this year. Not like 2009 at all.
He's still striking out more than a batter per inning
That’s pretty dominant. He has left a handful of pitches in hittable spots, and he’s been punished for it. But he’s absolutely gotten the job done. 92% of the time.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Getting the job done is good...
But it isn’t a dominant job. ERA in mid 3’s, needless to say, isn’t dominating either. Ok though…..good enough, I suppose. But not all star worthy.
And yet, still one of the most reliable closers in baseball.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
That almost sounds like a slogan...
Not sure what “reliable closer” means? He’s an established closer, but all that is reliable about him this year are less than dominant outings. Hope he picks it up in the second half.
Reliable is one who converts 90+ percent of his saves.
As you said, “getting the job done is good”.
The reality is, getting the job done is all that actually matters. The rest is just stuff for fantasy baseball.
If Street finishes this year with 45 saves and 4 blown saves, then he’s had a hell of a good year. And that’s all that actually matters. Style points don’t count in the standings.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
But the way he's pitching...
He won’t get to 45/4 S/BS. He’s been fortunate to have over 90% save percentage with the way he’s pitched. He’s good, but also a bit lucky.
If he stays away from the big fly in the 2nd half, he'll get there
and he hasn’t given up one of those since May 26th.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Sure, if he pitches better than he has...
Then he could produce those results. If Tulo hits better in the 2nd half, he will be an MVP candidate too.
I’m just saying performance to date should give one pause.
There are no perfect teams in 2011
though Boston would argue.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Boston has its flaws
They are running J.D. Drew, Marco Scutaro and Jarrod Saltalamacchia out there every day, and Beckett can’t pitch this well all year.
Yup.
They’d still argue. They’re Boston, after all.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
I think this is just always how Street has been.
Stats could prove me wrong but I definitely recall several saves since 2009 that looked a lot like that.
Without actually doing any research
I’m almost positive that’s how MOST closers are. How many teams have a true, lockdown, dominating closer?
Pretty much exactly one.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
And yet, their one true lockdown, dominating closer....
….has more blown saves this year than ours.

Yup, and Bell is better than Street

Wow.
This Cleveland team ain’t bad and we’ve won two hard games.

THIS
If folks aren’t paying attention, the Indians are leading their division, and we just took two straight from them in their house, so I dunno what all the complaining’s about.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
I don't think anyone's complaining!
Things are better now with offense!
4 runs is the worst we’ve had for some time (excepting Detroit’s ace)
Dude with a Rockies lovin' 6-year-old
And the Tigers were leading the division when the Rox started their series with them.
"Are they called the Rockies because they rock?" - 7 y.o.
That is the key
Two tough wins against a good team on the road.
Doesn’t matter how.
Huston Street is not an ideal closer, CarGo is not an ideal leadoff hitter
But when it’s working, roll with it.
You're right.
He’s only a former AS, ROY, and has the highest % of saves converted in franchise history.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
and this is where statistics are damning
all that is true, but like BABIP for hitters, Street has been fortunate more often than usual. He’s not “oh ****, Street is coming in, it’s over” for the opposing fans is all I mean. I like him, but it almost feels like taking a Greg Maddux approach to the 9th inning.
Rivera has one pitch with ridiculous movement
If Street mastered that with just one pitch (and his slider and change can look that good), there’d be no worries whatsoever.
90% of the time he’s fine. Some of the gutwrenchers lately are just a little too reminiscent of those Phillies games the October before last.
You mean the ones where Tulo struck out in the bottom of the 9th both times
with the winning run on base?
I don’t see anyone still holding him to task for what happened in October 2009.

Yup
I was at both those games, and it never ceases to amaze me how much blame Street gets for those, when in both cases, Tulo had the tying AND winning runs on base, and couldn’t even put the ball into play.
Okay, that happens, and I’m not mad at Tulo…the point is, since Tulo’s like Mr. All Time Rockie, Street’s getting held to a different standard with regard to 2009, and that’s just bs.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
I don't see a problem with Greg Maddux's approach.
It was good for 350 wins.
The stats aren’t damning at all.
Street strikes out more than a batter per inning.
Street strikes out more than six batters for every walk he’s given up.
Street’s only failing this year is that he’s been victimized by the long ball more than previous in his career, and that’s a bit troubling. But take away even two of those home runs, and his numbers are completely in line with career norms.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
And Greg Maddux is bad in what way?

None.
Which was a roundabout compliment to Street. It’s just the nontraditional approach to closing, that’s all.
I look at Street very much in the mold of Trevor Hoffman
Which of course is not to say he’ll end up as successful.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Huston Street is one of the best closers in baseball, there are about 20 teams that would LOVE to have him right now
More like 25
He’s top 5-6 in all of baseball. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t throw 98. Trevor Hoffman never threw 98 and he had 600 saves.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Ahh, well I can live with that.
The point being, we have one of the better closers in all of baseball. But he doesn’t have an out pitch, so the Rowbots don’t like him.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
We love him
We just get nervous.
And we like getting nervous
because we can complain about it.
Dude with a Rockies lovin' 6-year-old
I'd rather just enjoy our success for what it is rather than complain about how we get there
but that’s just me.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Nobody's apologizing for him
His pitching requires no apologies.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Apologist means "defender" or "explainer"
not making apologies for, per se.
again, my criticism was not of his results, but of his perception, both by our fans and those playing against us. Ultimately, only the results matter.
So we won? Yeah...I hate my computer right now

A sweep would be really nice

Why does he have to leave one pitch on a tee every 9th inning he works? It’s almost like it’s in his contract or something. And why does no one, ever, miss it?
Still, dude’s got some serious icewater. Keeps making pitches even after gift-wrapping extra base hits. I’ll take it (given the alternatives).
