Great win...

But I’m genuinely worried about Street and Betty. They are hittable and not dominating this year.

RafBet pretty much leads the NL in holds

And Street DOES lead the NL in saves.

Both barely so.

Street’s numbers are fine.

They are OK...

But the hits and 7 HRs? Not great.

by GoRoxGo on Jun 21, 2011 8:36 PM MDT up reply actions

The hits overall aren't bad. The HRs are the one outlier for him

Like I said below, take even two of those HRs away, and his numbers are just fine.

"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo

by Mondogarage on Jun 21, 2011 8:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Even 5 HRs in 32 IP...

Would not be fine for a closer. 7 is troubling. I agree it’s out of line with his history, but Street isn’t pitching nearly as well as his save totals and save % would indicate. He simply doesn’t dominate this year. Not like 2009 at all.

by GoRoxGo on Jun 21, 2011 8:41 PM MDT up reply actions

He's still striking out more than a batter per inning

That’s pretty dominant. He has left a handful of pitches in hittable spots, and he’s been punished for it. But he’s absolutely gotten the job done. 92% of the time.

"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo

by Mondogarage on Jun 21, 2011 8:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Getting the job done is good...

But it isn’t a dominant job. ERA in mid 3’s, needless to say, isn’t dominating either. Ok though…..good enough, I suppose. But not all star worthy.

by GoRoxGo on Jun 21, 2011 8:47 PM MDT up reply actions

And yet, still one of the most reliable closers in baseball.

"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo

by Mondogarage on Jun 21, 2011 8:49 PM MDT up reply actions

That almost sounds like a slogan...

Not sure what “reliable closer” means? He’s an established closer, but all that is reliable about him this year are less than dominant outings. Hope he picks it up in the second half.

by GoRoxGo on Jun 21, 2011 8:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Reliable is one who converts 90+ percent of his saves.

As you said, “getting the job done is good”.

The reality is, getting the job done is all that actually matters. The rest is just stuff for fantasy baseball.

If Street finishes this year with 45 saves and 4 blown saves, then he’s had a hell of a good year. And that’s all that actually matters. Style points don’t count in the standings.

"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo

by Mondogarage on Jun 21, 2011 8:56 PM MDT up reply actions

But the way he's pitching...

He won’t get to 45/4 S/BS. He’s been fortunate to have over 90% save percentage with the way he’s pitched. He’s good, but also a bit lucky.

by GoRoxGo on Jun 21, 2011 8:59 PM MDT up reply actions

If he stays away from the big fly in the 2nd half, he'll get there

and he hasn’t given up one of those since May 26th.

Sure, if he pitches better than he has...

Then he could produce those results. If Tulo hits better in the 2nd half, he will be an MVP candidate too.

I’m just saying performance to date should give one pause.

and this is where statistics are damning

all that is true, but like BABIP for hitters, Street has been fortunate more often than usual. He’s not “oh ****, Street is coming in, it’s over” for the opposing fans is all I mean. I like him, but it almost feels like taking a Greg Maddux approach to the 9th inning.

by jasonwrites on Jun 21, 2011 8:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Rivera has one pitch with ridiculous movement

If Street mastered that with just one pitch (and his slider and change can look that good), there’d be no worries whatsoever.

90% of the time he’s fine. Some of the gutwrenchers lately are just a little too reminiscent of those Phillies games the October before last.

with the winning run on base?

Yup

I was at both those games, and it never ceases to amaze me how much blame Street gets for those, when in both cases, Tulo had the tying AND winning runs on base, and couldn’t even put the ball into play.

Okay, that happens, and I’m not mad at Tulo…the point is, since Tulo’s like Mr. All Time Rockie, Street’s getting held to a different standard with regard to 2009, and that’s just bs.

I don't see a problem with Greg Maddux's approach.

It was good for 350 wins.

The stats aren’t damning at all.

Street strikes out more than a batter per inning.
Street strikes out more than six batters for every walk he’s given up.
Street’s only failing this year is that he’s been victimized by the long ball more than previous in his career, and that’s a bit troubling. But take away even two of those home runs, and his numbers are completely in line with career norms.

More interleague games please, Bud Selig!

We’re way better at those than divisional games.

Giants down 6-0 in the first inning!

And with their offense, they might need 18 innings to score that many runs.

Sophomore jinx in absolute effin spades

Kid did a lot of damage last year based on a funky delivery and pitches that no one could pick up. He needs a new gimmick.

Well, this is weird

I always get Dodger games when they are MLB Network. And tonight it’s blacked out.

The Padres are currently on MLB Network

That’s probably why it’s blacked out for you

Street

Why does he have to leave one pitch on a tee every 9th inning he works? It’s almost like it’s in his contract or something. And why does no one, ever, miss it?

Still, dude’s got some serious icewater. Keeps making pitches even after gift-wrapping extra base hits. I’ll take it (given the alternatives).

Yes

I know we said this about the Pads pretty much all of last year, but I’d rather be looking up at them than the Giants. I just don’t think their pitching is going to last. And they usually wilt when it’s 110 in the shade down there.

by BostonTransplant on Jun 21, 2011 8:50 PM MDT up reply actions

The way the Gints are playing in June

The Dodgers won’t be looking up at them for much longer, either.
