Monday Pebble Report: Signs of Life from Christian Friedrich; Chad Bettis is the Man
AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox (26-32, 2nd in PCL Pacific North)
Sky Sox 10, River Cats 12
Neither starter was worth their salt in this classic Colorado Springs barnburner. Josh Muecke gave up 7 runs in 3.2 innings of work, while River Cats starter Travis Banwart allowed 8 in his 4 innings. Things didn't get any better as the game progressed, as Bruce Billings let 4 runs cross over his 4-out appearance, and Andrew Johnston allowed the 12th run over a 2 inning relief appearance. Edgmer Escalona looked pretty decent, striking out 3 over 2 innings of 1-hit ball.
Offensively, Ian Stewart, Josh Fields, Cole Garner, and Mike Jacobs all had 3 hits and Alfredo Amezaga notched 3 of his own. All 9 Sky Sox starters had at least one hit, and Stewart hit a homer.
AA Tulsa Drillers (28-26, 1st in TEX North)
Tulsa 0, RoughRiders 3
Signs of life fro Christian Friedrich! Over 7.1 innings of work, Friedrich allowed all 3 of Frisco's runs (2ER), 7 hits, 1 hit batter, and 0 walks while striking out 7. The one unearned run came on an error from Friedrich attempting to pick of Leonys Martin in the first, and the other two were allowed to cross by reliever Joe Torres.
Scott Beerer and Thomas field both had 2 hits, and Michael Mitchell posted one of his own. That was the Tulsa offense on Sunday.
A+ Modesto Nuts (28-28, 4th in CAL North)
Nuts 5, Rawhide 0
Chad Bettis tossed 8 innings of 2-hit ball, walking 2 and striking out 8. Coty Woods allowed a runner to reach via the free pass, but pitched a clean 9th to bring the Nuts back up to .500. Rawhide starter Trevor Harden was on the rough end of the Rawhide loss, allowing all 5 runs to cross over 7 innings 4-hit ball. Baseball's a funny game.
2 of the 4 hits were homers from Carlos Martinez and Kent Mathes, and the other two were singles from Nolan Arenado and Dallas Tarleton.
Luckily, the Martinez homer was a nice Grand Salami.
The game took a mere 2 hours, 2 minutes.
A Asheville Tourists (27-30, T-4th in SAL Southern)
Tourists 5, Sand Gnats 8
With a name like the Sand Gnats, no team should ever have a good reason to lose to them. Seriously? The Sand Gnats? Well, Josh Slaats and Bradley McAtee didn't see it that way, letting 8 runs cross over 8 innings. Slaats went 7.1 innings, striking out 5 and walking 3 while allowing a homer and 8 other hits, and all of McAtee's runs came in the top of the 8th. Credit that man with a BS, L.
The Tourists weren't entirely helpless at the plate, though, getting multi-hit games from Rafael Ortega, Bryce Massanari, and Russell Wilson. Chandler Laurent hit a solo homer and Russell Wilson had a 2-run homer as one of his 3 hits on the outing.
DSL Rockies (3-3, 5th in the Dominican Summer League)

Had he gotten the last two guys out instead of Joe Torres allowing them to score
His season ERA would be in the 3’s now

He's still not really overpowering though
His K% has dropped for a third straight season and there’s been several starts where he’s given up quite a few hits. I think this season is a step forward but I need to see more to think of him the way I did a couple of years ago.
Can we lay off of Cargo and Tulo until their BABIP numbers get with 50 points of their career averages?
NO, we are NOT going to fire Jim Tracy midseason!!!!!

I'll take a slightly lower K rate for a vastly improved BB rate
He’s not going to be the #1 some thought his ceiling had risen to after 2009 and 2010. He’s more like the future #3 we drafted as, and that’s not a bad thing.

regarding the hits, the same sample size gives us the following
Past seven starts:
39.2 IP
27 1B
5 2B
1 3B
3 HR
He’s also posting a career high GO/FO ratio. He’s not the same pitcher he was two years ago, but this is a pleasant (and much needed) turn for him, and for the farm.

I don't understand why this is a pleasant turn
Two years ago Friedrich was making hitters look foolish in both Asheville and Modesto and showing poeple that he might be better than anyone ever thought. Now he’s posting solid lines but looks to be nothing more than a middle of the rotation guy.

But he's healthy, and he's productive.
That’s a pleasant turn from last year’s epidemic of injuries.

This is who we thought when we drafted him. If he ends up in that role, I’ll be pleased.

Here's the problem I have with this,
(and it speaks more to the Rockies recent drafts as a whole than Friedrich individually) the Rockies need a few guys to exceed the expectations most scouts had for them on draft day to make up for some of the busts they have selected in recent years. In 2009, it appeared as if Friedrich fit this bill; he doesn’t anymore and I find that a little disappointing.
To the bigger point, if you combine all the players the Rockies have selected in every draft since they took Tulo with their first round pick in 05, they have compiled a major league WAR of -0.2. That’s a joke for a team who needs to rely on their farm as much as the Rockies do.

Nicasio, Rosario, Chacin, Jimenez
we’ve had the type of breakouts you’re talking about, but most have come from our Latin scouting.
Wheeler and Brothers are also technically “first round” talents and look like solid picks.

I separate the Latin scouting and draft scouting into two different categories
The Rockies Latin scouting has been second to none. The Rockies draft scouting on the other hand has been pretty terrible from the pick after Tulo through the end of the 08 draft in terms of generating any production at all in the majors (although I’m hoping Blackmon can buck this trend starting right now).

I'll give you 2005 and 2006 as pretty bad, aside from Tulo
2007:
Connor Graham
Cory Riordan
Parker Frazier
Jordan Pacheco
Darin Holcomb
Matt Reynolds
Chris Sale
Bruce Billings
That’s a decent draft. No potential stars (too bad we couldn’t sign Sale) but it’s still a decent depth draft.
2008:
Christian Friedrich
Charlie Blackmon
Ethan Hollingsworth
Kiel Roling
Tyler Massey
Chad Rose
Thomas Field
There’s decent players in these two drafts, and at least a few likely MLB players throughout each year. What more can you want?
O’Dowd has personally stated that his draft philosophy has changed since 2008 so hopefully we’ll see the fruits of these choices sooner rather than later. It’s still too early to fully judge these drafts, but I don’t think it’s the extreme weakness you are suggesting.

upon further research, we're right in the middle of that 2006 draft
regarding # of players that made the Majors. 11 teams have had more 2006 draftees with MLB service time than Colorado.
Maybe they were really shallow/ top-heavy drafts? It sure looks like it.
To reiterate, we didn’t do great for a couple of years, but the draft is such a crapshoot that you hope to get a couple of major leaguers every year.

2008 is better than I gave it credit for
07 has some depth but no guys who are going to make a significant impact on the MLB roster.
With the Greg Reynolds/Evan Longoria fiasco, I have a hard time calling the 06 draft anything but a failure.
The biggest problem with the 06 and 07 drafts is that we had two top 10 picks (one each year) and did not get solid MLB players out of either of them. That’s where your bread and butter has to be. Thankfully we have our Latin system to make up for this because I consider those two pretty big missed opportunities.

And to be honest
I think it’s that scouts tend underrate our Latin pitchers in general than it is we’re getting unecpected breakouts. If you look at Chacin’s minor league numbers for instance, there’s no reason he shouldn’t have been rated a higher prospect than he was.

I'd like to transpose the words slightly and vastly in your first sentence
In 08 and 09, Friedrich’s K/9 rate was 12.2 and 12.0. It has been almost cut in half in 2011 to 6.9.
And while I agree the lower walk rate is nice, his BB/9 in 2011 is only at 2.4 compared to his career minor league numbre of 3.1. I’d like to see an even lower BB/9 if I’m going to swallow a drop in K’s like that.
He’s still a solid prospect and a guy who should have an impact on the big club in the future but he’s not a guy I think we should be overly excited about; something he could have been if he reapeated his 09 success in Tulsa.

2 of his first three starts are outliers of his season and vastly skew the overall numbers

Not in the K/9 department
That has remained pretty consistent all season. Other elements of his game have shown improvement but not enough to make me jump for joy.

you're not happy until you see a K/BB higher than 3.75?
i hope you’re ready for a pitching staff with literally 6 people on it
1. Tommy Bond 5.0363 R
2. Curt Schilling 4.3826 R
3. Pedro Martinez 4.1500 R
4. Mariano Rivera (41) 3.9483 R
5. Dan Haren (30) 3.9201 R
6. Jim Whitney 3.8224 R
also james shields is currently at 3.7269

Not K/BB
I was looking at K/9. Also, I was looking at the K/9 numbers for Friedrich in AA, not the major leagues. They are not comparable.
