Tuesday Rockpile: Rockies Add Charles Blackmon, Tyler Anderson, Trevor Story...Juan Nicasio Next?

There were so many storylines with the Rockies going on yesterday.  Let's knock them out, one by one:

The Rockies Won a Game!: Yes, it is true.  It has happened.  Now, a win in either of their next two games gives them their first 3-game series win since April 15-17.

Clayton Mortensen vs. Juan Nicasio:   The Rockies' prospect with the most helium this season has been Juan Nicasio, and he has been exceptional in two starts this season, aside from one inning in San Francisco.  With Aaron Cook due to start tomorrow in the finale at PetCo Park, either Nicasio or Mortensen would be losing their rotation spot.  Mortensen tossed six shutout innings last night, walking two and allowing five hits against the Padres in what amounted to his last audition.  It wasn't impressive, but was it enough to stave off Nicasio and send the Dominican to the minors for more work on his secondary offerings?  Bob Apodaca on Mortensen after the game:  "He didn't pitch as well as he needed to."

Dexter Fowler Likely to the DL:  The Rockies' center fielder has struggled of late, and he injured a muscle in his left abdominal muscle diving into first base Sunday.  The injury is legitimate, though whether he'd see the DL if he was hitting .400 is another question.

Charlie Blackmon Likely Called Up:   Nothing is official, but the Rockies best hitting prospect in AAA did not play last night and is finally rumored to be coming up.  While the Rockies have called up Eric Young Jr., Alfredo Amezaga and Chris Nelson from AAA to help an ailing offense, Blackmon is a completely separate beast.  The left-handed hitter can potentially help the offense with power, hitting, and speed.  He was hitting .328/.366/.525 on the road, so his numbers are not inflated just due to Colorado Springs.  He was rated the #7 rated Rockies prospect by Kevin Goldstein in January.  I have heard he is one of the hardest working players in the system, and Christian Friedrich echoed that claim last night.

**AAA Stats** G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG
2011 - Charlie Blackmon  58 243 49 83 19 4 10 49 19 34 12 5 .342 .393 .576

Carlos Gonzalez Shifts to Leadoff and Center Field:  With the number of AAA players running out in which to change up the line-up, Jim Tracy put CarGo back where he was a year ago.  The offense didn't come (0-for-4, 2 K's, comebacker, popup), but he did pick up an outfield assist in center.  His start there strengthens the case that Blackmon will be called up and playing regularly when he is.

Rex Brothers Makes MLB Debut:  Jim Tracy wasn't shy about putting Brothers in the game last night, allowing the lefty to make his debut in the 7th inning, leading just 1-0.  He gave up two singles and induced a double play, but most importantly, he threw 12 strikes in 15 pitches.  The Rockies wanted him to improve his fastball command, and he was strong, throwing 10 of 11 for strikes despite sitting 95-97mph.  He threw four sliders, one resulting in an infield single, two in balls and one in a called strike.  He was removed in favor of Matt Belisle to protect the rookie a bit, but all in all, it was an impressive debut.

Oh yeah...there was also the start of the draft last night.  David Oh No and mkorpal will add much more later in the day, but there's a bit on the draft after the jump.

Star-divide

Draft

The MLB Draft resumes at 10:00 AM MDT today with round 2 and will finish with round 30.  Rounds 31-50 are tomorrow.  The Rockies will choose in the #17 slot in each of the coming rounds.  Make sure to have this window open throughout the day to keep an eye on the Rockies' newest draft choices.  Last night, they selected two players:

#20 - 21yo LH SP Tyler Anderson - Oregon University - 6'4", 215

Anderson is a polished lefty starter with a plus changeup and fastball in the low-90's.  His slider is sharp but not a swing and miss pitch.  Not great stuff, but highly projectable as a mid-to-back-of rotation starter.  In other words, he has nothing in common with Tyler Matzek...except first name, occupation, handedness and desire to be a Duck.  Keith Law doesn't like the pick, but it is worth noting that Law only saw Anderson pitch in his worst outing this season, against Arizona St.  Here is a scouting report and video from John Klima at Baseball Beginnings

#45 - 18yo SS Trevor Story - Irving High School (TX) - 6'1", 177

Story is a very good fielder with good range and a very strong arm.  He possesses speed, but his bat is the main question, similar to the vein of last year's 3rd rounder Josh Rutledge.  Unlike Rutledge, Story has the potential to develop a solid bat, some scouts believe, that would make him a five-tool player.  Video.

There have been a lot of critical comments on the Rockies draft so far, so I'll leave you with this reminder by Jeff Sullivan on the draft:

The opinions of the many trace back to the opinions of the few

Everybody who follows the MLB draft has opinions on the MLB draft. Everybody has their own favorite players and least favorite players, and when things go right or wrong, a lot of people will respond with remarkable emotion. The majority of these people have never actually seen the players play. Thorough scouting reports are generated by a select few, and these reports spread like a brushfire. Which isn't to say that the reports are wrong. Many reports are accurate. But scouting is a subjective art, and scouting opinions should never be taken as gospel. Draft time tricks people into making conclusive statements when they should not.

I'm not completely against the Anderson pick

He sounds like a refined version of Jeff Francis. But in what most are calling the deepest draft in many years, why are we grabbing a guy with a lower ceiling in the first round?

Is it because he’ll be an easy sign and allows us to spend more money on depth choices on Day Two? Is it because we’ve been struggling with our recent “high ceiling/low floor” first round picks the last few years? Is it at all related to the injuries/lack of progress from our LHP prospects? I don’t understand the logic.

these are rational questions based on what we know

I’m thinking/hoping the Rox hope to clean up with depth and money saved in the first round.

giving us a jump on Arizona, who looks to have spent most of their budget on two pitchers in the first 10 picks

That kind of logic baffles me

AZ gets two players who could end up with 50 WAR between them while we sign a dozen who scrape to be above replacement value. Same outlay, massive ultimate difference.

by biondino on Jun 7, 2011 9:58 AM MDT up reply actions

we're handcuffed by draft position though

if we can get 4-5 guys who slip because of signing concerns, it’s a solid strategy.

I think we selected him for all those reasons.

Matzek was the exception to the trend, not the trend itself. We almost always go college in the 1st round. They may have entertained the idea of Tyler Beede or Taylor Guerrieri, but in the end they were going to stick with college.

Unfortunately, the higher upside arms I’m sure they really wanted, Barnes and Gray, were popped just before we picked. Meyer’s was still on the board, and posses a huge upside (ace upside if all goes right), but he has the risk of a high school pitcher, and will never have above average command.

In the end, I think they wanted to shore up one of the few organizational needs, LHP (with middle infield being the other, which they also took care of). They also wanted someone who would be able to help in the short term. Anderson is a guy who could be pitching in the majors by the end of next year. Being able to sign him at slot is a bonus, allowing us to get a higher slot risk in Story in the supplemental round. We could continue to go with more expensive picks in the 2nd also.

by mkorpal on Jun 7, 2011 8:22 AM MDT up reply actions

Wasn't excited about Anderson pick but I must admit I don't know much about him

With a quick glance, it appears he is a lefty with a low nineties fastball…. along with his best pitch being a possible “great” change-up. I will say this I do get excited when I see a pitcher’s best pitch is a change-up. Disclaimer, my view might be tainted with too much love for how much the change has helped JDLR.

Love that Sullivan quote...

And I like the Anderson and Story picks, for the most part. A polished lefty with low-nineties fastball and a good change-up will do for me. Plus if Story actually can hit then, awesome. Personally, I would’ve gone with Mikie Mahtook o maybe Guerrieri and then Norris but the guys that O’Dowd & Co. picked were picked wisely without any reach. When you’re picking #20, you have to work al ot harder than when you’re picking #5 and I credit the front office with doing a great job. What’s more, there are still plenty of guys I like still available. I love the draft! And anyone who’s miffed, take solace in the fact that other than Arizona, who had a couple no-brainer early picks, the rest of our division made some really questionable selections.

I’m liking Aaron Westlake, still hoping for Norris, (doesn’t cost me to dream) Dillion Maples, Noe Ramirez, Jason Esposito and a bunch of other guys today.

If the Rockies make a long term shift in center field, it will be Carlos Gonzalez who takes it over, not anyone else.

And if Carlos Gonzalez were hitting .300, Sandy Clough would be ripping him for not hitting .301.

I realize it has nothing to do with his hitting, but it’s going to go a long way toward dictating how many chances he gets to become an everyday player.

At this point he just needs to get the K% down to a respectable number.

He’s a guy that will by a high-BABIP hitter, and with his BB%, he can be successful with a 25% K-rate. But not 34%.

Yeah but he stole 27 one season in 37 attempts

That may not be fantastic , but right now he couldn’t steal 27 if you gave him 100 tries.

by Northsider1964 on Jun 7, 2011 9:38 AM MDT up reply actions

He worked a lot on bunting in spring training

and still didn’t seem to get it. I found that very troubling. I really hope he can turn himself into a solid leadoff hitter with some more work at AAA because it’s great to have him in the outfield. If he could keep his OBP above .350 consistently at the MLB level I see no reason why he doesn’t stay in the lineup. A CarGo/Fowler/Blackmon outfield could work well on paper for several more years. Unfortunately the first two have struggled at the plate this year and the third has no MLB experience from which to judge.

It’s been detrimental to their ability to play small ball, move runners up, and win close games this year.

Giants fan here

Was looking at baseball prospectus this morning and the Rockies have just been robbed in getting runs, you can see for yourself here. According to their stats (hits, walks, total bases, etc.) they should have another 4.6 wins. The Giants on the other hand have been lucky in the other way. Hopefully the Rockies can get some runs across and make this the race we were hoping for at the beginning of the season.

A quick question. I’m going to be able to make the game in Denver on Monday night. Last time I went to Coors field I had some pretty uninspiring burritos. Where do people like to eat at the stadium. Thanks in advance!

I’d buy these things outside of the park, they’re by far the best deal in the stadium.

If you do go to the Famous Dave's stand, get some chocolate-dipped bacon too

because it’s awesome. Also, the smokehouse in the Sandlot Brewery (right field corner, behind section 110 or so) sometimes has good BBQ-type food. It varies from game to game. The beer is always good there (ask the bartender what their specials are since it’s an experimental microbrewery and they vary as well).

BA on Anderson

Many of you may have already seen it, but BA is a bit kinder to Anderson than Law, for whom I have the utmost respect but did see hium in his one awful game as stated above:

20. Colorado Rockies: Tyler Anderson, LHP, Oregon

Anderson came to Oregon from Spring Valley High in Las Vegas in 2009, the Ducks’ first season back after a 29-year hiatus, and stepped right into the rotation. He became Oregon’s all-time leader in strikeouts this season. He’s a good athlete who has gotten bigger and stronger and now stands 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds. Anderson’s biggest selling point is his feel for pitching. He takes a businesslike approach to carving up hitters and commands five pitches for strikes. He throws both a two- and four-seam fastball, and it sits in the 89-93 mph range with above-average movement. His slider is his best breaking pitch, and he’ll mix in a curveball. His bread-and-butter secondary offering is an above-average changeup. Anderson has a funky leg kick in his delivery. It doesn’t affect his ability to throw strikes and adds deception for the batter. After being drafted in the 50th round in 2008 by the Twins, Anderson should be a first-rounder this time around and has the polish and work ethic to move quickly.

Opinions are split on him

For sure. Some love him, some hate him.

by mkorpal on Jun 7, 2011 9:36 AM MDT up reply actions

That sounds pretty promising.

I like guys who throw a good changeup. it seems like the most deceptive pitch in the repertoire other than a random knuckler. Sliders and curves usually come in on a different plane with different release points, a good chageup looks like a fastball on delivery and maintains the same plane long enough to trigger a “holy-crap-this-guy-just-threw-me-a-fastball-and-I-am-going-to-crush-it” swing.

The BA scouting report seams to be based on long term accomplishments and progressions. I hope Keith Law isn’t basing his opinion solely on one performance.

So does anyone want to trade the bullpen we have right now

For the bullpen we had one month ago? I know I don’t.

I wanted Paulino to get a longer look from the Rockies as a starter. In fact, I wanted him to get a spot start after it was originally announced that Ubaldo was going to skip one or two starts.

What I didn’t want was for him and Morales to be taking up space in an overworked bullpen. I’ll take the bullpen mix we have right now, thank you very much.

With all the negativity around the compensation round pick Story

I seem to remember that when Tulo was drafted scouts claimed he had “power potential,” and his defense was what needed the most work. People were worried about where he would be moved to. Seems to have worked out alright. See link below for his draft article in 2005. I am not claiming he has the power potential of Tulo, but he seems to be high upside. Also, there will tons of headlines like “Story’s happy ending” and double entandre will run rampant… thats good enough reason to draft him right there.

I have a suggestiono on the rotation

Before deciding that it’s Mortensen or Nicasio after Cook comes back, let’s see how Cook actually pitches in the big leagues. If he’s better than Mortensen or Nicasio, then he stays in the rotation. If not, then he gets the long relief slot.

The idea that Cook’s automatically entitled to a rotation slot regardless of performance baffles me. At this point of the season, the Rockies need to be in an extreme “whoever performs well, plays” mode, rather than making assumptios based on prior years’ results.

Cook if he returns to 09 form could really help this team

personally I think we need to keep Nicasio on the roster at all costs, going for the division will require big time performances, something I trust Nicasio to do more than Mortensen or Reynolds.

~ Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good too ~

I don't trust Nicasio's secondary pitches yet.

In SF he was getting creamed on 0-2 because he doesn’t have an out pitch.

If something goes wrong

it’s just sending these guys to the minors and they are already using their option year from the beginning. If Cook is absolutely useless for two or three starts I think something will change. But until then I have no problem sending either down to keep consistently working.

IAWTC

Cook has earned the benefit of the doubt for a least 3-4 starts unless he is completely awful. I am also interested in seeing more from Nicasio. I am not ready to anoint him rotation savior just yet. As for Mortensen, I think we are seeing his ceiling. He has two starts and one six inning relief appearance against the light hitting Giants, he was fortunate to keep the ultra-light hitting Padres off the board. When he has faced more competent offenses, he has given up 4 and 5 runs. He has been very solid and the Rox have been in every game he has pitched (minus LAD game), but he isn’t 3.20 ERA good.

by Rosenort on Jun 7, 2011 11:15 AM MDT up reply actions

Tracy borrowed this idea from Joe Maddon, I think

Evan Longoria was slumping. Maddon moved him to leadoff for a few games so he’d see more strikes & could get his timing & stroke back. It seemed to work.

The question with Cargo is whether he’ll wait to see the strikes come. Last night was not encouraging.

This is a temporary move, I’m quite sure. Just trying to jump-start him.

Exactly

Different roles. He didn’t make the Rockies’ rotation out of ST. He didn’t cut it in the Rockies’ bullpen. He’s doing fine as a starter in KC so far. Good for him and good for both organizations. I don’t see the big fuss over it.

Harper signed a Major league contract right?

If so, does that mean hes part of the MLBPA? And if so, would he be able to avoid MiLB’s testing procedures?

I frankly wouldn’t be surprised if he ever tests positive but I’m sure if hes not able to avoid the testing then he probably already has been tested.

Ap's comments on Morty were interesting.....

The guy just pitched 6 shutout innings and got stronger as he went along, but Ap — who rarely says a negative word about his pitchers — said " “He didn’t pitch as well as he needed to.”

I wonder if that’s to give cover for moving him to the pen, or if that’s the way Mortensen needs to be motivated.

Granted, the Pads squared some balls up last night, but Mortsensen kept his composure and got the ground balls he needed. It was a fine effort for your “5th starter via injury” guy.

by evers44 on Jun 7, 2011 12:48 PM MDT reply actions

I found those comments bizarre, actually

So bizarre I’m guessing he was misheard or misspoke. I mean, how “well” does he “need to” pitch? A six inning shutout is among the ten best starts we’ve had all year, and the Pads have been hitting lately. Plus he was taken out at like 90 pitches. Could have easily been 7 innings.

by BostonTransplant on Jun 7, 2011 4:04 PM MDT up reply actions

Maybe, but really the Pads didn't hit that many hard

Except Cantu and a handful of others. This wasn’t one of those “get him out before he blows up”, ridiculously BABIP-driven shutouts. I don’t remember any line drives right at anyone. Most of the squared up balls were actually hits. And he made great pitches to get out of jams. What else do you want?

by BostonTransplant on Jun 7, 2011 4:35 PM MDT up reply actions

There were a decent amount of fly balls, including at least a couple that probably would have been out elsewhere.

He mostly pitched perfectly fine. But you have to get nitpicky if you’re choosing between him and Nicasio.

by holly96 on Jun 7, 2011 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Don't forget upside

Nicasio may not have the experience of Mortensen, but his pure stuff will likely get him farther right now.

"I wonder if that’s to give cover for moving him to the pen"

that was precisely my thought. He obviously did pitch as well as he needed to (to win the game). Seems like foreshadowing and inevitable result to me.

by Teekalong on Jun 7, 2011 4:17 PM MDT up reply actions

Renck goes there ...
For Fowler, he needs to get healthy. Then, IMO, he should focus on just hitting right-handed going forward.

I really hope he is picking something up from Tracy et al and not just speculating. Depending on how Blackmon does, I could see a Dex-Charlie platoon, with Dex also getting some defensive sub gigs. It’s been so obvious for some time that Fowler’s lefty swing is weak and slow. Just too easy to exploit. And since as Renck points out he also isn’t doing the things that would get him more infield hits from the left-hand side, what’s the point? And yeah, I know his lefty numbers are a little better than his righty. But this is one of those times when you just have to let your eyes see what they see.

by BostonTransplant on Jun 7, 2011 4:02 PM MDT reply actions

Funny, because my eyes see better numbers for him from the left side than from the right side.

Could be a case of too many moving parts and wanting to simplify

Last year we were all complaining about his L/R splits. This year he seems to have addressed that but at the same time he’s striking out too much, can’t reliably get a bunt down, and can’t steal a base to save his life. It could be that just batting from one side lets him spend a little more attention on those other areas that he clearly needs to improve. Not sure I agree with this because having a switch-hitter or two at the top of the lineup is clearly an asset, but not if that switch-hitter takes three strikes and goes back to sit on the bench.

As I said in my post, I consider that a rare (and I do mean that) example of stats being crapola

I don’t know how you can not see how weak he looks from the left side. He gets more AB’s from that side, and apparently a few more dribblers and such, but I think his ceiling is WAY higher from his natural side. His swing is so much smoother and more powerful. He’s more confident, has fewer holes, and the outfield can’t play him as shallow.

by BostonTransplant on Jun 7, 2011 4:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh, and as well

I just checked. It’s not true anymore, at least not in 2011. His AVG is a bit better, but OBP is the same, and SLG much better from the right side. Also something like 80% of his strikeouts have been from the left side.

by BostonTransplant on Jun 7, 2011 4:39 PM MDT up reply actions

The question is what would his K% be batting R on R? It might still be close to 34%

Here's something I would like to know:

What’s the difference in Dexter’s running time from the LH batter’s box to first base, compared to his time out of the RH box? I really have no idea, but it would be interesting to find out. The conventional wisdom says you’re two steps closer hitting from the left side, so it must be significantly faster. But when you have to get a 6’6" frame full of arms and legs going in that direction, I wonder if he isn’t just as quick from the right side?

That’s not the sole reason players switch-hit, obviously, but it is part of the logic behind doing it.

by Northsider1964 on Jun 7, 2011 7:40 PM MDT up reply actions

I was thinking about this earlier as well

Would be interesting to see his time out of the box from both sides.
