Punchless Rockies Run Sunday Losing Streak to 12 with 2-0 Loss to Nationals
This is getting a little ridiculous, don't you think? Twelve Sundays in a row, the Rockies have lost. I can't help but feel somewhat responsible for this. I'll tell you what, I'll do my best to attend the next Sunday game, because they haven't lost when I've been at Coors Field.
The Rockies only mustered six hits and got nobody past second base in a shutout loss to the Nationals this afternoon. I guess that's what happens when the fourth best hitter in your lineup is Mark Ellis. In doing so, they wasted a great outing by Jhoulys Chacin, who allowed one run on four hits in seven innings, striking out four. Unfortunately, the Rockies scored zero runs so Chacin took the hard luck loss (8-7) despite lowering his ERA at the break to 3.16.
Offensively, the Rockies were led by multi-hit efforts by Todd Helton and Ian Stewart (?!?), but they only mustered one serious scoring chance in the game. That would be the eighth inning, in which with men on 1st and 2nd and one out Jason Giambi whiffed and Mark Ellis flew out.
The loss drops Colorado to 43-48 going into the All-Star Break, after which they'll have an eight game home stand against the Brewers and Braves.

I'm not big on second-guessing Tracy after the fact
But this game had all the feel of a “whoever-scores-first-wins” affair. And yet in the 6th, when Chacin throws out a leadoff single, he lets Spilly hack his way into a DP rather than bunt the go-ahead run into scoring position for Ellis and then Helton.
I know the offense has been short-handed. But at least recognize that it’s short-handed and give yourself a shot at striking first.
I felt the same way
and Spilborghs can bunt fairly well. Some times to jump start an offense you have to manufacture a run.

And yet the "bunt with a man on and no outs" strategy is often derided
so there’s that. In fact, I’m surprised the complaint isn’t that JT didn’t pinch hit for Chacin in the 6th.

The way he was pitching
80> pitches going into the 7th nobody would take him out. I was surprised when Zimmerman was removed after pitching as well as he had with only 88 pitches, and that was in the middle of an inning.

as well it should be
Tracy loves this strategy and I would love to know the statistics about how often he does this and how often the man on second with one out scores.
Doing it with an 8 hitter is one thing but it drives me nuts when he does this with a two hole hitter – this is the guy who is supposed to have the best bat control on you cant come up more creative ways to get the offense going? There are these things called hit and runs. OR you could have guy on first (Cargo, Blackmon in particular) steal second – then bunt to third. But even that is awful – you are basically resigning yourself to a run one inning which may be fine (like today) but in general is a terrible approach.
Jim Tracy ordered 64 sac bunts in the 2010 season, which ranked him near the bottom amongst NL managers. I think we’re collectively a little scarred from the absurd number of sac bunts called by his predecessor, which consistently ranked at the top of the league.
Like any other strategy, there’s a time and a place. I don’t love it, either.
"You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around the whole time." - Jim Bouton
Does this take into account
all of the failed sac bunt attempts, that the batter then had to swing at the third strike? I also think a lot of those were pitchers and not position players.

And I'm NOT generally a fan
of bunting a leadoff single to second. But when hits are hard to come by and you have a .215 BA/.300 OBP hitter at the plate, it makes all the sense in the world. The fact that Spilly happened to be in the #1 hole today made it an even better idea, because it almost guaranteed that you would get Helton to the plate with an RBI opportunity.
Don’t ever confuse an bad 8-hole hitter with a #1 hitter, just because he happens to be forced into the leadoff spot for a couple of games. That was Tracy’s mistake.

No, Tracy's mistake was injuring Cargo's wrist and breaking Charlie Blackmon's foot

I probably criticize Tracy less than 95 percent
of the people here. But when he lets a groundout machine swing away in a 0-0 game instead of moving the go-ahead run into scoring position, I think it deserves a mention.
You play games with the team you have, not the team you would like to have. Just because you would not normally ask a top-of-the-order hitter (and certainly not Gonzalez) to bunt in that situation doesn’t mean you play it that way with a .215 hitter.
by Northsider1964 on Jul 10, 2011 8:19 PM MDT up reply actions
I would be tempted
to ask Gonzalez to bunt because it would catch the other team completely off guard and gives me the possibility of having two men on with no outs because he’s fast enough. I agree with you otherwise.

I tend to agree as well
but Helton has a better chance of getting on base via a walk in front of Tulowitzki than Gonzalez does and I think Helton will continue to bat at around the .320 mark for the season. This would allow both Tulowitzki and Gonzalez the opportunity to drive him in, although it could work the other way if Carlos is on base allowing Troy and Todd to bring him home.

I can see the OBP argument, and if CarGo's not getting on base that'd be a perfect lineup
but CarGo’s always been a 2nd half guy, and he matched Helton’s OBP in June anyway.

Jordan Zimmerman is a *really* good young pitcher
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
At some point you have to beat a few of these good pitchers though
I’m not saying all of them, but my goodness, the Rockies seem to lose every single game they play against a good pitcher because this team is one of the worst I’ve ever seen at grinding out runs in close ballgames. The Rockies now have a losing record this season when the pitching only gives up two runs. That’s a red flag.
I'm pretty disgusted right now!
by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Jul 10, 2011 9:28 PM MDT up reply actions
Of course we do, that's not what I'm getting at
And we’ve beaten Matt Cain and I think Timmeh this year…we’ve beaten good pitchers. But my point is that what makes pitchers really good is that they can whip out really good games, like Zimmerman did today. I also suspect that most of those “give up two runs but lose” games were in May, because the offense has been better (for the most part) since then.
But some days, a good pitcher will pwn the opposition, as Chacin did today.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
I don't think the offense has been that much better since then
The Rockies have failed to score more than four runs in 16 straight games when they are playing someone other than the Kansas City Royals.
As much as we were dominated today, is it too much to ask that we grind out one run agaisnt a guy like Zimmerman when Chacin is pitching as well as he was?
Also, we still had a great opportunity to score in the 8th where we could have tied the game or better yet have taken the lead – Not surprisingly, we didn’t take advantage of it. That’s something a good team would have done.
I'm pretty disgusted right now!

quite the interesting set of remarks on Arenado’s D from the Nuts manager, Jerry Weinstein
“He makes plays you’ve never seen before,” Weinstein said. "There’s no one way to do things. There are defensive fundamentals, which involve catching the ball and throwing accurately, and he does those things as good as anybody I’ve ever seen at this level.
“I’ve been coaching baseball for a long time and he’s the best I’ve ever seen at third base. He’s the best defensive player in the Cal League and it’s not even close.”

I'd say neither
He’s atrocious in the field – and I mean one of the worst defensive shortstops of all time. His career numbers by the three main defensive metrics……
Ultimate Zone Rating = -114.4 runs
Total Zone = -131 runs
Defensive Runs Saved = -122 runs
Often times these three metrics differ on players but if there’s ONE THING they all emphatically agree on, it’s that Derek Jeter is nothing less than a horrible defensive shortstop. He doesn’t make many errors so the naked eye that doesn’t know what to look for may not think he’s all that bad, but when it comes to range, you can probably count on one hand the number of players who have spent the majority of their careers at that position and have been worse than Jeter.

Exactly
Even if you have a guy who makes 30 more errors in a season than Jeter (which is an enormous number), he’s still not a better defensive shortstop than that guy if he fails to get to 40 or 50 more balls that go for base hits over the course of the season because Jeter has absolutely NO RANGE at the position.

The Giants have scored 128 runs and given up 138, yet their record at home now stands at 28-16; a full 12 games over .500
I'm pretty disgusted right now!

Well no one can convince me that the Rockies
are better than any team in the west right now. Sorry

Was that your opinion last night?

I think the Rockies are far from the worst team,
And talent wise I still think they are the strongest – But at the end of the day, it’s less about being the best team than it is about being the team that plays the best. Now that I’ve watched this group of Rockies fail to play well as a team for the better part of 91 games, I’m rapidly losing faith that they will suddenly start doing it after the ASB.
I'm pretty disgusted right now!

It's not that they do them wrong
it’s that they don’t do them at all

I have the same opinion.
Just because we won two games against the Nationals doesn’t mean we have suddenly become world beaters.

Or NL West beaters either

and in one of those games we burned their bullpen, and the other one was jason marquis
we hit their best pitcher and immediately derailed
the only organization of humans responsible for more evil in the universe than the philadelphia phillies is the boston red sox
if it's not tracy's fault, it's not not tracy's fault, either
And it's not like we did much in those first two games offensively either
For the series, we scored five runs (an average of 1.67 runs a game) against a team who has solid, but certainly not amazing pitching (the Cubs scored more runs in the 6th inning of Thurday’s game against the Nats than the Rockies did in this entire series).
The only reason we won this series is that Jason Hammel and Ubaldo Jimenez gave us two brilliant starts. Sure winning two of three is nice, but I would put more stock into it if we got it with Nicasio or Cook pitching one, or better yet two of those games. Let’s face it, this series win is more about what part of the rotation was pitching than it was about the Rockies, as a team, stepping up and doing anything good.

I think the whole NL West is...not that great this year.

IAWTC
But there is also no NL West team that is particuarly better than the rest.

I would think
the one that won the World Series last year might just be the best team in the division.
The Giants know how to win ugly – I know nobody wants to come to grips with that reality but that is the way it is. At this point to call them lucky is quite laughable.
No
Last year is last year.
This year…well, the Padres did the same in 2010. They were exposed as frauds in September. The Gints may win the West again, but the rest of the NL (especially PHL) is ready time around, and even then, their pitching has been shown to be human a bit more in 2011.

But there is no doubt that they are the best NL West team thus far this year… whatever that title is worth. Winning ugly is still winning.
Exactly
And I’ll give the Dbacks credit for at least making a race of it.

This was cool. Bernie Williams did the National Anthem at the Futures Game.
There’s also a video there of Arenado’s double, for anyone who missed it.
