Rockies Lose 15th Straight Sunday Game, 8-3 to Padres

SAN DIEGO, CA - JULY 31: Kyle Blanks #88 of the San Diego Padres beats the throw sliding into third base during the eighth inning of the game as Ty Wigginton #21 of the Colorado Rockies tries to make the tag at Petco Park on July 31, 2011 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Kent C. Horner/Getty Images)

Fifteen Sundays, fifteen losses. They've been close, blowouts, pitchers duels, and slugfests...but the end result has been the same -- a loss for the Colorado Rockies. This time it was a bullpen meltdown that spoiled a fine pitching performance by Juan Nicasio.

Nicasio went seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out 10 men, the most any Rockies pitcher has struck out this year. He left with a 3-2 lead, but Rex Brothers and Matt Belisle proceeded to pour gasoline on that lead, light it on fire, and dance on its ashes. Brothers didn't get an out, walking two and giving up a triple to get the loss (1-1), while Belisle gave up another 4 hits. It didn't help that Dexter Fowler dropped a fly ball and Eliezer Alfonso committed a throwing error. All in all, six Padres crossed the plate in the 8th inning.

Offensively, Troy Tulowitzki went 3-4 with a RBI, while Chris Nelson, Dexter Fowler, and Eliezer Alfonso each had two hits on the day. Unfortunately, all 10 of the Rockies hits were singles, so runs were scarce.

Star-divide

Next Sunday, somebody else will be doing the wrap.

Well at least there's a race in the NL West

Even if the Rockies are merely bored spectators. Dbacks are two games out and have a pretty favorable schedule. Odds are against them, but at least they put themselves in a position to make a title run. As with the Padres last year, I tip my cap to them for that.

Funny caption to the picture.

I thought that was Stew, not Wigginton :P

Should’ve won this one, bullpen let us down.

Good to see Nicasio put forth a complete-quality outing on the road.

It was sneaky-good, actually. Didn’t realize he only had 79 pitches after six until they talked about it on TV. I’m impressed with Nicasio, seems like his composure (esp. with men on base) has improved. Just hope he can perfect a third pitch (cough, slider, cough cough), was better today and he was very sharp with location.

Also, nice to see Tulo heating up.

Just wish he could be a little more consistent . . .

If anyone was curious as to why the site's tagline is what it currently is

this game is why.

seriously, how do you lose 15 straight on Sunday???

for the rest of the week, we’re 9 over 500??

we need a better team chaplain or something…

by RMC7511 on Jul 31, 2011 9:28 PM MDT reply actions

But guys gotta get their ABs

Right?

Broncos new pass rush Von Miller + Elvis "DOOM" Dumervil = DRILLERS! Because that is what they will be doing to opposing QBs. Ahhh yeah!

I want to say how awesome a particular Rockies player is and that he will be the MVP, but the last time I mentioned it in my sig he went out with an injury, so, GO PLAYER WHO IS SO AWESOME!

aaron cook has to start some time

the only organization of humans responsible for more evil in the universe than the philadelphia phillies is the boston red sox

lets just use our 2012 money for something good and not another wigginton

by papality on Jul 31, 2011 10:48 PM MDT up reply actions

this is about the only reasonable answer

it’s not like i’m saying – if our record against the giants, phillie and braves were only 500

or if our road record were only …

etc etc

this is sunday – home, road, good teams, bad teams.

we’re over .500 the rest of the week – on sunday, we lose 15 in a row.

amazing…

Negative...five...ninety...four...

…OK, now I’m not so irked that we didn’t move Street…
…obviously, Sexy Rexy isn’t quite ready to set up yet, let alone close…

Gotta be patient with the rookie, I suppose.

I was panicking this morning that we'd move Huston,

seeing I was shocked (as I shouldn’t have been as much) about the Ubaldo deal.

But in my mind I knew there weren’t many rumors about him; I’m just sad no Wiggy deal came about.

This year sucks.

There just wasn't many good offers.

Not a lot of interest in Street.

Yeah

I’m glad they didn’t just dump him for nothing.

how do we feel about the Ubaldo trade?

by Rosenort on Aug 1, 2011 12:01 AM MDT up reply actions

Sad, mostly.

As for technically, not overjoyed.
I’ve been able to deal with it okay- will be optimistic bout the guys we got.

This year sucks.

by prettyinpurple on Aug 1, 2011 12:03 AM MDT up reply actions

That may be true

But what else to you do in yesterday’s situation? Betancourt can’t go three days in a row anymore, and Reynolds had been struggling. Brothers had given up one run in his last 17 appearances and hadn’t had a bad outing in six weeks.

Sometimes relief pitchers throw lights-out, right up until the time that they don’t. That was pretty much the case with Brothers yesterday. I do wonder if using him in th 9th on Saturday with a 5-run lead was a wise decision, given his ineffectiveness on Sunday. But that’s classic hindsight, since he’d bounced back like that before without a problem.

Brothers may or may not be ready for prime time, but I wouldn’t read so much into yesterday’s appearance. If only more guys on this team could go six weeks between bad outings.

and wigginton is still on this team?

everyone else caught on to how much he blows

we couldn’t unload him, in all likelihood

Jeff, it's time to lay the cards on the table or fold

are you really going to refuse to cover next Sunday’s game?

Wait, what's his real name? We should make a joke out of that.

i would be ok

with totally disregarding we even play next sunday.

I'm an idiot

missed his last line up there. Yeah, sounds like he’s serious. I don’t blame him.

He's been talking about it for weeks.

I mean, shoulda happened sooner.

This year sucks.

I think he's serious,

so I’ll be prepared to step in.

Even the team's last Sunday victory, the one against the Cubs, is tainted (at least for me)

because that evening was game 1 of the Nuggets/Thunder playoff series, where the refs robbed the Nuggets by not calling the most obvious offensive goaltending in the history of basketball

Wait, what's his real name? We should make a joke out of that.

This is the weirdest streak I've ever seen.

Blame Tracy’s Sunday lineups if you want, but the B-lineup has won games on other days of the week. There’s some seriously voodoo or something going on here.

by holly96 on Aug 1, 2011 12:17 AM MDT reply actions

Speaking of streaks

Todd has now reached base safely in 33 straight games, dating back to June 20th. Still a ways to go before reaching Ted Williams’ all-time mark, but it’s been impressive nonetheless.

Alanna Rizzo is my dream girl.
