SB Nation Launches iPhone App

How many of you like to post on the go? Like to post from games? Want to get caught up on the Rockpile on your lunch break? As a smartphone owner, I definitely get mileage out of SBNation's mobile sites, but in this day and age of magical phones that will read you stock quotes while playing your Foo Fighters Greatest Hits and cooking you breakfast, well, we need to take advantage of that platform!

To do exactly that, our tech team has been hard at work and has an exciting announcement to make:

The SB Nation iPhone app is now available in the App Store! And it's Free!

Now you can stay on top of all the latest news and commentary for Purple Row and all 300+ SB Nation blogs from your iPhone. With the SB Nation iPhone app you can:

  • Get the latest, breaking sports news as it happens
  • Customize your news with your favorite teams, sports and blogs (including Purple Row)
  • Get notified of updates to the stories you choose to follow on SBNation.com, regional sites, Baseball Nation, and MMA Nation
  • Read and reply to comments

FAQ

  1. An Android version of the app is coming soon. Hopefully by the end of the year
  2. The app is free
  3. Comments are basic read-and-reply, but SB Nation has plans to enhance them in future updates
  4. You can use your existing SB Nation user name and password to log in to the app

I don't ever hear Iphone users complain about that other mobile platform - App envy?

Also can’t get to any fanposts/fanshots from the app, which is a bummer, but can’t have everything I guess.

Just a little.

I’m tired of seeing Android apps that are watered down versions of iPhone apps.

Yes this is partially a result of the iPhone programming language being a little more mature.
And I also see this as comeuppance from being a PC user all these years and the mac getting the shaft as far as programs go.

But no, I will never buy another Apple product until they stop trying to force their hardware down my throat.

Get well soon Juan.

Actually on the SB Nation network, iOS is still the largest mobile audience segment

Android is catching up quickly and many of us use Android phones on the SB Nation development team so we’re eager to build that version of our app. We started with one platform to focus on figuring out what the SB Nation app should be, put it out there, collect feedback, improve, fix and then be prepared to launch it on Android as well.

So now I ask.

How many developers do you have working on the Android app, and do you need any more volunteers? I don’t have any experience yet developing for Android, but I am an experienced software engineer that may be of use.

Get well soon Juan.

Not autorefresh

But there’s a refresh button in the top right of the page.

Please report those crashes so we can fix

A short report with where you were in the app and what happened would be very helpful. Please send to support@sbnation.com and we’ll zero in on the problem ASAP.

Doesn’t seem to be an auto-refresh. Hopefully there will be a way to skip to unread comments in next version. With the mobile browser, you had to scroll forever on 500+ post game threads.

Is it an app that is optimized for both iPhone and iPad, or will I get the "small box" experience?

Other than that, yeah, it’ll be even better when the Android version is released. Not gonna complain, though…after my previous phone, Android has damn near infinite choices by comparison.

...and, of course, a quick check of the App Store answers my question for me.

Hear, hear

thanks to you and your team Trei!

And I’m sorry about the hurting we just laid on the Astros.

Ok no I’m not.

Thanks!

I actually think it looks pretty good on the iPad right now (I don’t mind the size constraint if it’s something I want to use). I bet it’ll be really nice once scaled for iPad, though…
