Let's get the Rockies to make a video supporting the It Gets Better Campaign and the Trevor Project

For the tl;dr crowd or anyone who already knows what I'm talking about, here is the link to the change.org petition to do just that. As of right now it has over 1600 signatures.

As an introduction, here is a link explaining the It Gets Better Campaign, and here is a link to the Trevor Project.

As of yesterday, nine MLB teams have created videos in support of these great charities. Of America's major sports (sorry MLS, you know what I mean), only the MLB has been supportive of these campaigns to stop bullying and save the lives of LGBTQ youths.

Regardless of your politics and/or personal beliefs about the LGBTQ community, I hope we can all agree that the bullying of children in schools, leading to a number of suicides and attempted suicides is not something that should be happening in a healthy, moral society.

That is what these two charities support. The first is about giving bullied kids a light at the end of the tunnel, to encourage them and help them realize that once they get away from high school, their lives will improve dramatically. That's a message I think anyone who was bullied in school, regardless of what for, can understand -- Johnny Damon, for example, talks about being bullied for having a stutter. The second provides counseling for anyone who has been bullied to the point where he or she is considering suicide.

As many people say right here, this is my first fanpost. What motivated me to write today is that I think that we can work together to get the Rockies to make a video supporting these two charities. They wouldn't be the first MLB team to do so -- in fact, as of right now, they would be the 10th. However, I have been trying to think of a way to get the Rockies to do this ever since I heard about the first team to do so (the Giants). I was reading yesterday about the Tampa Bay Rays and their video, and one of the articles I read said that the team created the video in response to a Change.org petition that had received over 10,000 signatures. I think that, with the support of everyone in Purple Row's awesome community, we can easily get that kind of response.

Finally, here are my three additional reasons why we should petition the Rockies to make this video.

  1. The Rockies have a reputation for being a team with great community outreach, and creating a video here would fit perfectly with that.
  2. The Rockies also have a reputation for being made up of "good guys" -- no one on the team gets arrested, everyone is a good family man, etc. -- and part of what goes along with that is the idea that the Rockies are a very "moral" and "religious" team. For many Americans, "religious" morality has come to mean bigotry against LGBTQ people, when in reality the bigotry that would encourage bullying of children struggling with their sexuality comes from a very small and vocal minority. This would be a great chance for the Rockies to prove that unfair stereotype wrong.
  3. Finally, we'll get a chance to see some of that Oscar-worthy player acting. Do you love seeing Carlos Gonzalez in the taco commercials, or Tulo saying, "Must be the keys" before sighing in exasperation? Here's a perfect chance to enjoy more of your Colorado Rockies' skills on camera. Just to get a taste, the Mariners' video is well worth watching just for some of the acting skills.

So if you agree with me, please sign the petition!
