[Juan Nicasio] had surgery on his C-1 vertebrae this morning and is resting comfortably. More at 3:30 PM today.

I’m not sure where the c-1 is, but my thoughts and hopes are with this kid. I don’t care if he ever pitches again as long as he can be a functional human being. My best wishes to all his family and friends.

Sthe first cervical vertebra is the one on which the skull rests; that’s why it’s called the Atlas. Together with the C-2 vertebra, it forms the joint that allows you to turn your head; it’s the bone that directly bears the weight of your skull and its contents, and that connects it to the spinal column.
It’s a very frightening place to have a fracture.
