Jordan Pacheco comes through as Rockies win slugfest against Reds

Jordan Pacheco hit his first career home run, one of nine HR'scombined by the Rockies and Reds on an old school Coors Field afternoon, and Pacheco finished with three hits and three RBI as the Rockies won 12-7 over Cincinnati. Rockies starter Alex White allowed five home runs in five innings, as his rough Rockies debut season continues.

The Rockies banged out 13 hits overall on the afternoon, only Seth Smith and Chris Iannetta were held without one among position players. Carlos Gonzalez had two hits, and scored two runs. Jason Giambi hit a two run home run, and Dexter Fowler and Mark Ellis also homered for the Rox.

Two of the home runs allowed by White were to Reds outfielder Chris Heisey, who coincidentally was once connected in rumors with the Reds on a potential Ubaldo Jimenez trade. Jimenez, of course, was traded to the Indians for White, among others. Rockies relievers Matt Belisle, Rex Brothers, Huston Street and Rafael Betancourt allowed just one hit and no runs in four innings after White was pulled.

OMG, I am in LOVE with Jordan Pacheco's swing

Let me count the ways: Short, compact, quick to the ball, great hip turn, alley-to-alley power, lots and lots of contact. I dunno if he’s going to be a star or not — too many factors to predict, including whether he can field a position or not — but he’s such a perfect example of what we have too little , and need much much more of. I mean, he hits a dinger like he did today, and I want to stand up, grab Dan O’Dowd and Jim Tracy by the shirt and scream “THAT. That’s what we need. No more long, smooth, arm-based, thing of beauty swings. We’ve got plenty. We want this guy or guys like him.”

now we just need to find him a position...

Rays beat the Red Sox in 11 innings (6-5)

The Wild Card gap is now down to 4.5

I'm pretty disgusted right now!

That would be a huge upset

Did you know..

They don’t have a single player named ‘Ray’ on their team? Whatever happened to truth in advertising?

So, what's going on with White?

Is this just normal growing pains or something more? At what point do we start to worry about all the walks and home runs?

by RoxnSox09 on Sep 10, 2011 9:25 PM MDT reply actions

At this point

I’ll start to worry about that stuff in spring training. I’m not excited about it right now but I want him to pitch and get experience against the better hitters. This is the reason Cook was removed from the rotation, he’s not here next year and White will be (hopefully).

I'm not concerned about today

As ATF Tweeted, Coors was on the moon today. Balls were flying all over the place. I’m pretty sure they turned off the humidor.

Yes, No, Late May/Early June

Everyone’s anxious for answers in the Ubaldo trade. Completely understandable. White and Pom have awesome potential, but will need some time in the Bigs before we’ll really know what we’ve got. I understand your apprehension, but just force yourself to chill and not worry. If White’s still pitching this way in June 2012, THEN we can panic.

Well, that's what I'm trying to do.

And that’s what I asked. But I think we’d be concerned with just about any other pitcher who had produced those results so far. I’m not saying that he’s garbage or the Rockies should give up on him. I’m just trying to understand how much of this is just random, how much is due to figuring out a new team and league, and how much is due to actual level of talent and/or development.

by RoxnSox09 on Sep 10, 2011 10:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Also factor in

that White’s still recovering from injury. (Should have mentioned that earlier.) Yes, right now he’s trying to figure out pitching at this altitude, new league, and new pressures and probably putting too much on himself. Talent level is great. I personally think his ceiling is a great #2 rotation guy. And BTW: I hope I didn’t come off as harshing your question. Was totally not my intention.

He is still a prospect

perhaps being rushed. He does not appear ready to be an everyday guy just yet, but his stuff is legit and he might just need time. But he’s got a lot of work to do, for sure.

Thank goodness he's a starting pitcher

and only has to pitch every 5 days then.

This is very OT but.....

Don’t look now, the Rays are back in the race! 5 games left against the Sawx…4.5 games back in the WC race. Yeahhhhhh buddy.

Red Sox pitching

is starting to resemble the Rockies. Injuries (Beckett, Buchholz) and poor results from a highly-paid veteran no. 3 starter (Lackey, shades of Aaron Cook) have put them in a tailspin. Even with an offensive lineup like theirs (though Youklis is also hurt), a team can’t win consistently without decent starting pitching. Call that “Lesson No. 1 of 2011.”
