The Jim Tracy Firing Pool!

Hey there, Rowbots!

Now that we know Jim Tracy will be back in 2012, but not extended (which means he's on at least fairly thin ice), it's time to start the Jim Tracy Firing Pool. So, here's the big question, on what day will Jim Tracy officially no longer be the manager of the Colorado Rockies? This can be via firing, resignation or non-renewal of his contract. Also, as a bonus bit of fun, who will be the man to replace him when he's gone? The prize for the winner is this: bragging rights and not having to watch Jim Tracy manage the Rockies any more.

As for my picks, I'll go with May 18, 2012 with a dark-horse, Joe Mikulik as his replacement.

Let the games begin!

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

I think Martinez will be employed by next season,

or that the Rockies won’t be willing to hire him because he’s more of an unknown quantity.

Look at their managers:

Don Baylor: Well-known player, with major league experience as hitting coach for popular team.

Jim Leyland: Extremely well-known manager who recently won the World Series

Buddy Bell: Experienced manager and well-known player

Clint Hurdle: Hitting Coach, guy who had been with the club almost since its inception

Jim Tracy: Current bench coach, experienced manager

Nothing here tells me that they’re going to go for Martinez. Trammel seems like the best shot. They are most likely getting to know him during ST, which will make them feel better. He is a big name player and experienced manager. I don’t know how we pass him up.

I also think Trammel won’t bite at any of the jobs coming up this year. And if Friedman goes to the Cubs, Martinez might end up there.

Sorry, but...

who is Martinez? I’ve missed something somewhere. If it is Dave Martinez of the Rays. I’d be curious why. Thanks – jl

Dave Martinez, Bench Coach for the Rays.

First, I support hiring bench coaches over AAA managers because I think the track record of AAA managers without major league experience in their first major league managing job is pretty weak. So, this leads to a comparison between him and other bench coaches/coaches/and former managers.

My personal opinion is that most of the managers in the majors are variations on the same theme. There are only a handful of managers who have the following qualities:

1) Understand how to motivate adult professionals

2) Undertand how player development is and what there role should be in the process of player development

3) Understand the idea of statistical analysis in baseball and acknowledge its usefulness even though they may not employ it all of the time

One of these managers is Joe Maddon. Although he isn’t going anywhere, if even 50% of him wore off on Martinez, Martinez would be a better manager than most of those in the majors now because of his understanding of the above points. Out of the other bench coaches/coaches/former managers who might be considered, only Don Wakamatsu shows some of the qualities above, but even that is in limited amounts. I believe that MArtinez could bring those qualities to this organization, and the organization would be better for it.

I'm going with 10/4 as well.

But with Vinny Castilla. The Rockies will be competitive the entire year but will end up third around 8-10 games back and the contract will not be renewed.

As I said in the originating RP...

I’ll take Apr. 30, as the Rockies quickly realize they wasted the off-season with mis-placed “loyalty”.

I’ll be the first in this thread to suggest they will hire Ryne Sandberg (and I’m pretty sure I spelled both of his names correctly!)

5/24/12

After a home sweep by the DBacks and Mariners. A 1-2 series in Miami doesn’t help, but they’re mostly waiting for the off day.

After Stewie goes on a Spring Training and April tear, Tracy inexplicably plays Wigginton anyway for the first three weeks of May. In order to appease their finally-budding superstar and get the team back on track, they bring in Joe Mikulik to run the show.

(Although I’m really hoping for sometime in October and, at this point, would prefer propping up a bag of baseballs as the manager.)

Alan Trammel for manager longterm and Dac as interim. Jerry Dipoto for GM because he KNOWS what he doesn’t know and will look for better information and is not afraid to say goodbye to people.

I say he won't be fired anytime soon

In fact, he’ll make it through the entire 2012 season while benching some of the best players a third of the time. When he is still not fired by December 21st of next year, the baseball gods will be so angry, they will destroy the world.

I'm pretty disgusted right now!

I want Tracy gone so bad, everytime I see him now I want to throw the remote at the TV (not really but that is how mad he makes me). I need to predict this offseason even though I know it wont happen, predicting anything next year would be too depressing. If we lose we can get rid of him, if we win he will get an extension (the only thing that would make me feel good is a 1 year extension if we win)…… feels like a lose-lose situation.

I am hoping all this talk by O’Dowd is some joke…I mean why is he so in love with Tracy? It is clear they have vastly underperformed this year, so who do you blame? The players? Well yes, but you can’t fire all of em, so get someone in there that can motivate them and actually direct a ballgame.

Sunday Bloody Sunday. Tracy, O’Dowd, Geivett all fired.

by coffeeis4closersonly on Sep 22, 2011 4:47 PM MDT reply actions

I think the entire Rockies regime changes

Between the draft and the trading deadline. I’ll take 7/12/12 as the date O’Dowd and most of his staff (Geivett included) to be cleared out, and Tracy will be gone 8/4/12. Tracy will be fired once it’s clear the Rockies won’t make the playoffs again. Unless the new regime’s manager is already decided, Tom Runnells takes over as interim manager until Trammell takes the job either during the season or after the season. Jerry DiPoto becomes the new Rockies GM.

I’m pretty confident that the Rockies more or less will have a pretty large turnover next year, and 2012 is their last shot. Tracy stays initially to keep order but he won’t be in the future plans, DiPoto will want his guy in there.

But there is a possibility of this all happening in the next 400 days or so.

He made great moves at the deadline last year

The Haren move especially impressed me, getting a TOR potential starter in Skaggs and having Saunders eat innings until he arrived, that shows that event hough he had the job for a few months, he already had a plan in place.

Also, he’s a Rockies guy; the organization knows him and I’m pretty sure DiPoto liked it here. He was also the head of scouting when we drafted Tulo.
