Padres 2, Rockies 1: Mat Latos Sends Rockies to Sixth Straight Home Loss
Hey, at least the Rockies showed some fight this time.
After seven innings of being completely shut down by Mat Latos (with only a bunt single and triple from Eric Young Jr), Colorado started mounting a rally...which constituted five hits and one run in two innings. It wasn't enough.
One day after being one-hit by Cory Luebke and Ernesto Frieri, the offense was comatose again as Colorado lost their sixth consecutive home game. Jordan Pacheco followed a Dexter Fowler double in the ninth inning with an RBI single to chase Mat Latos, who was one out away from a complete game shutout. After Kevin Kouzmanoff singled, Heath Bell struck out Wilin Rosario with the tying runner at second base to end the game.
Back to back hits by Wilin Rosario and Thomas Field in the eighth allowed Troy Tulowitzki to pinch hit, representing the go-ahead run with one out. In his first at-bat since September 13, he struck out looking on a Mat Latos curveball.
Jhoulys Chacin was quite good, bucking the trend of being uneven in recent weeks. The Rockies' right-hander allowed two runs, though one was unearned due to a Kevin Kouzmanoff error. He struck out four and allowed six hits in six innings.
The bullpen was even better. Rafael Betancourt struck out the side in bringing his season ERA to 2.98. Rex Brothers struck out two in a perfect inning. Matt Belisle needed just five pitches to work a perfect seventh. It just wasn't enough with the anemic offense that is still missing Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton.

Not to be That Guy, but.
The Rockies’ one run in the past two games is a season low, “besting” four individual two game streaks in which they managed two total runs.
Mark Ellis hit a 2-run home run last night, which was the Rockies’ only hit.
good call.

Help me out here
I’ve already come to grips with the fact that Giambi is a mortal lock for a 2012 roster spot. But was he unavailable tonight because he played almost one entire baseball game in the past three days, or just not used because he’s hitting A Buck Thirty-Three as a PH?

I don't think anyone said either way
But I wouldn’t bet against him having mildly tweaked something while jumping to grab an errant throw or something last night.

My last mini-plan ticket is for tomorrow
So I’m going to go for at least part of the game. It’s sort of like watching Part 7 of a really bad made-for-TV mini-series. You have to watch the final episode just to confirm how terrible it really was.

Do they throw out free stuff at the end?
Or is that only if the season ends at home?

but it’s only the leftovers from the other give-aways like T-shirts and hats and soft lunchboxes. Pretty weak stuff for the most part.

Prediction---->Well, Tulo got his 30 homers. Well, it looks like my prediction on Cargo took a bad turn. So much for 30 homers and 100 RBI's. DAMN YOU PABLO! Why did you have to hit that ball near the wall?

I was pretty pumped up for that moment
But now that I can’t get a batting glove worn by the immortal Eliezer Alfonzo, I’m probably not sticking around for it.
It’s a cool thing for the kids, I suppose, though I doubt too many will cut school to watch this epic tilt.

MLB Network could be giving us Vin Scully
And instead it chose the croakings of one Duane Kuiper, whining about Kershaw’s strike zone. The only way this gets worse is if Jon Miller waddles over from the radio booth.
Krukow I can stomach though. He’s a decent color man.

Well...
It was just weird walking up 20th Street to the west gate with my dad. I got total dejavu from Opening Day. Seriously, I literally thought aloud, “Wait, weren’t we just here yesterday? Yeah, Opening Day was yesterday! And there was this big festival and a bunch of people and they were all so excited to begin this year that was gonna be so great….yeah.”
My dad pointed out that we were playing the Padres again, so that made it even more dejavu-y. And we walked along the same path to the 1st base dugout, except this time it was so dead and so empty, the stench of 2011 sucking all the life outta it.
I got Ellis, Millwood, and Iannetta’s autographs.
But anyway, we go sit down, and it was still so freakin’ empty and eerie and dead. Look:
The Star Spangled Banner Echoed it was so empty. But yeah, the game went as expected and sucked, though I had a good time.
It still hasn’t hit me that I walked outta Coors for the last time this year. And as I was walking back, I got another flash back to when me and my dad were buying tix for Opening Day in February with the same beanie I was wearing and everything.
Then I realized life, like baseball is too short, and the last summer of my childhood is about to end.
Then I brewed coffee.
This year sucks.

Will you be skipping class to go to the last home game of the year?
You always put up the pics for the last game. You can’t let us down. Be brave and ditch school for this game. LOL

Went to the Red Sox/ O's game tonight
All kinds of awesome there. Among the many highlights…….
1) Watching Erik Bedard throw 51 pitches in the 3rd inning and still not get of of it. (His final line on the night – 2.2 IP, 4 ER, 5 hits, 76 pitches) – And the bullpen was taxed going into this game because of the double header yesterday when neither starter could get deep into the game.
2A) Josh Reddick misplaying a ball that would have ended that third inning with only one run coming in. (It was as obvious an error for an outfielder as you could get)
2B) Listening to the Fenway fans boo everyone after the play.
3) Buck Showalter getting thrown out of the game in the 5th and lighting a fire under his team after the Red Sox came back and took the lead.
4) Jonathan Papelbon blowing the save by allowing not one, but two hits with 2 out and RISP in the 8th inning when he was asked to get more than three outs. He entered the game up 5-4; he left down 7-5. SWEETNESS!!!!!
5) Dustin Pedroia grounding into a double play in the 9th inning representing the tying run.
6) Hearing Red Sox fans actually say…… “Well, at least the Yankees won”
Talk about a team coming unglued!!!!!
I'm pretty disgusted right now!

Sweetness
Any day Papelbon blows a save is a good day.
Any day the O’s beat the Yankmees or the Red Sux is a good day.
… But I just can’t believe you on point #6 :-)

Home from my last game of the year
What a pathetic end to a pathetic year. Chacin pitched well enough to win that game. Threw strikes, got 1-2-3 innings, gave up 2 runs. Offense gathered themselves for the 9th inning but that was all. Second-to-last home game of the year and we’re still making fundamental baserunning mistakes.
The most disturbing thing about September is watching our callups (other than Pacheco). Clearly the Rockies bet the farm on building a player development-oriented system that cannot produce MLB-ready players. This is depressing on many levels and will likely take years to fix, if and when they bother to start fixing it. Years we should have been in the running for division winners.
Oh well… The chill was in the air tonight. Time for winter, time for skiing. See you again in April, Coors Field. Hopefully 2012 will come with lower expectations and better results.
