Game #156: Alex White vs. Henry Sosa

Colorado Rockies at Houston Astros, Sep 22, 2011 6:05 PM MDT

OVERFLOWS WILL GO HERE. Who am I kidding, there hasn't been need for an overflow in ages.

This is the final Thursday game of the season, and thus, my final game thread of the year. The Rockies can't get back to .500 this year, but I can with a win, which would bring my win/loss record of game threads to 8-8 on the year.

Apparently the game has no temperature. We're playing in a vacuum, people.

Please god no that cannot do anything good to help Whites Home Run rate.

Calcs 1-3 and Differential Equations are required for everyone

I don’t know if she will have to take Advance Engineering Math or not (probably not) and she might have to take statistics (calculus based).

No, they split calculus into two parts just like in high school.

Calc AB = Calc I

Calc BC = Calc II

Then you get into vectors, differential equations, linear algebra.

@CentralCaliRox

by CentralCaliRox on Sep 22, 2011 5:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Our calc 2 was the vector stuff

and some more in Calc 3, but that was multiple integrals and line integrals primarily.

I haven't been following closely the last two weeks

is there a reason Kouzmanoff and Wigginton are playing instead of Nelson? Is he hurt or has management already decided he isn’t a “piece of the puzzle.”

Also, I don’t think I emphasized it enough…WHY THE F*** are Kouz and Wiggy getting ABs at this point?

Rangers and Angels would have to play each other first to break the tie in the West

Winner clinches the divsion – Loser gets thrown into the Wild Card mess. From there tiebreakers (which can’t be determined yet) would dictate which two of the three teams would play an elminination game (esentially the two losers of the tiebreaker). The Winner of that game would advance to another one game playoff in which they would host the third team in the tiebreaker which would determine the winner of the Wild Card.

Last time Alex White started against the Astros

is actually in my top 6 games of the season. It was the one where the Astros had a relief pitcher play right field for one batter so he could pitch to two lefties. And a bunch of other cool stuff happened. And so I have what is probably an excessive amount of hope for this game.

by everever on Sep 22, 2011 6:07 PM MDT reply actions

Ooh, I remember that game.

My mom was there and called me as she was walking to the car. They hadn’t realized at the time what the Astros had done with the relief pitcher switcharoo, but she remembered being confused.

right

there are about 10 things wrong with it, but you can’t assume a player will strike out if they knew that every time a ball was hit in fair territory it would be a hit (you also can’t assume a player will still get a hit every time [walks not counting here])

But Rosario is nowhere near ready to replace Iannetta. Chris is 4th in the NL among catchers in WAR, and he’s got between 60 and 120 fewer PAs than all three of the guys in front of him. by maris61 on Sep 22, 2011 8:17 PM MDT up reply actions

My point is

that irrational hatred for some players is interfering with objective views of the game.

Look at the replay on that play. Wigginton actually timed his jump (and he did jump, surprisingly high for him) and made a nice play to stop a high throw from going to the wall.

And what we get here is “Helton would’ve had that.” No, he wouldn’t. He would barely have gotten off the ground with his back & the runner would’ve made second base.

Irrationally hating player to the point that it interferes with objective analysis is just as bad as falling in love with a player to the extent that his faults are overlooked. Too much of both around here.

Oh.

I don’t know if you realize this, but I actually don’t hate Ty Wigginton, although I gave up defending him on the internet because people around here are really firmly anti-Ty Wigginton.

I just find it amusing to say things like “Helton would have had that” on an obviously impossible throw that no first baseman could possibly have made an out on. Humor doesn’t always translate well in writing, especially sarcasm.

It’s not like I have a Ty Wigginton poster above my bed. It’s just that he seems to attract not “get off my team” emotion but “I genuinely wish plagues to befall you” emotion. People get really personally mad about Ty Wigginton.

OK that wasn't much of a look at Escalona

But I’m still going to beat the drum again for him to get a spot start.

Big guy with an easy, simple delivery.
Uses both sides of the plate.
Makes pitches that are off the plate, but entice a swing.
Has a pulse.
Walks upright without his knuckles dragging the ground.

All of these factors lead me to believe he might have a better outing than several we’ve endured recently.

It would be the first time he ever started professionally.

Yeah, I know

Does that mean someone goes to jail if he starts a game? Anthony Bass is a reliever too, but he’s owned the Rockies twice this year in spot starts, so now the Padres have at least given him a test drive as a starter.

I just think this team has reached the “leave no stone unturned” point when it comes to starting pitching, so what would it hurt?

by Northsider1964 on Sep 22, 2011 8:49 PM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

Bass was almost exclusively a starter in the minors

Escalona has never started a game since joining professional baseball.

To answer your question, yes, Stu Cole will have to go to jail.

The established starters have tallied in the past month, and there’s not a jury in the land that will convict us.

If need be, I will subpeona Greg Reynolds, Alan Johnson and Clay Mortensen as witnesses/alternatives.

I'm just kidding.

I do have a strong dislike of Miami though.

This is what happens from growing up in Tampa, and regularly losing to kids from Miami in school competitions. Plus, the beaches are crappy.

I have a strong dislike of Miami now too

I have a bigger dislike of Tampa and Orlando

Orlando is worse than Miami.

I’m not a fan of Tampa, but it’s better than the other two.

This year sucks.

It reminds me of their current stadium

It’s like they don’t want to let it go

I'm pretty disgusted right now!

the 2011 season?

Score a goal. Unit. Basket. Go squadron! Do good! Defeat the opponents soundly in this...skirmish.

That vaunted Giants bullpen

Ain’t quite so stellar when the starter goes 4+.

Welcome to our world, Giants Nation.

So true

You must have loved that Cards game.

I'm pretty disgusted right now!

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Sep 22, 2011 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Well that was one where the back end of the pen really did blow up

What kills me are the games where the starter gets the hook in the 4th with an 8-6 lead, and the fans blow a gasket because the lowest-paid guys on the team can’t shut the other team out for 5+.

#^%@%$ bullpen!!!

The Rays better go at least 4-2 in these last six games

I’m gonna be really pissed if the Red Sox continure to collapse and nobody it there to take advantage of it.
