So, when the Giants play day games, I generally see a lot of fans on the train in the morning.
There’s an old guy I’ve seen at least three times now (including this morning) with another older guy and a younger guy (presumably one of their sons). The interesting thing is that every single time he’s been wearing Oklahoma t-shirt and hat. I’ve decided the only casual clothes he owns are Oklahoma gear.
Today is bittersweet

In like two months I'll desperately want baseball back.
Right now I just long for this nightmare of a season to be over.
Yeah, right around the Winter Meetings is when I get the itch.
Of course, this year that itch could depend on what we DO at those meetings.
Signing Wigginton and trading for Lopez were not particularly exciting moves, but then came the Tulo extension and the DLR signing.
Hopefully something else awesome happens to really get me pumped for ’12.

I usually get my offer to renew my ticket package in late November or December. (Last year, I faxed in the renewal a few hours before they announced Tulo’s contract extension. wooo!) About then, I start counting down to the day pitchers and catchers report.

I use it with my iPod Touch and really like it. I may get a phone during the off-season though, and support for AtBat12 will be an important factor…

It's great when it actually works
It’s great to be able to listen to the Rockies when traveling or listening to east coast games when riding the train to the stadium. I fondly remember walking around downtown Dallas last year looking for a place to have dinner while listening to the Rockies at Washington and thinking “how cool is this?”

Just make sure the Android phone you get has plenty of internal memory.
My issues are small frustrations. I have been able to listen to at least half the games on my phone and it has worked well.

It will work fine after a reboot, but it is a memory hog. I won’t be upgrading my phone until after next season, so hopefully they do a bit better with the memory management in the app because I believe the Android version has a memory leak.
Also, I don’t like that the app doesn’t allow you to move it to an sd card.

rotation, which I would prefer won’t be the case.
Even if he pitches lights-out in Tulsa
They’re not going to promote him midseason if the current rotation is doing fine.
It’d be cool to see him added to the bullpen for a postseason run, but I’d rather not see him in the rotation until 2013.

I think he should be developed as a utility infielder.
There are better options at 2B that will be coming up from the sister soon (RUTLEDGE!). Field isn’t the future at 2B. It’s as utility/trade chip.

but he’s hit ~.160 with RISP. He’s hit .063 with the bases loaded and has produced more outs (18) than he has had plate appearances (16). I will stick up for the guy if people start making personal comments, but holy good gooddamn, he has been frustrating to watch with runners on.
That's fair, but I mean we signed him just to be a reliable backup
so it’s not like we were expecting to put him in so many “clutch” situations this year

Regarding Hudson, it just seems like all he does is whine at the umpires about the strike zone when he pitches against the Rockies. Outside of those starts, though, I don’t pay that much attention to him either.

On second thought, I wouldn't hate to have him at 3B.

I think this is the best bet
in his (albeit brief) time there in September he’s been adequate defensively. Not making web gems every night, but getting the job done. If he keeps hitting like he has been (which is a big if) the marginal difference between him and Stewart/Kouz/Wiggy defensively would be worth it.
Time will tell, but it seems he’s earned a shot somewhere.

Stewart is an enigma.
That’s why I said it might be the best we’ve got. Stewart could hit for a .400 OPS or an .800 OPS; we have no idea what’s up with him.
I don't buy this.
Stewart had a horrible, terrible, absolutely shitty season. Everything that could go wrong DID go wrong.
People around here are very big on sample sizes. Look at this.
Stewart’s first 1,282 plate appearances: Averaged ~.790 OPS.
Stewart’s 2011 136 plate appearances: .464 OPS.
Obviously, that second line is a much smaller sample size.
I’m willing to bet.. a good amount.. that Ian Stewart gets back to that .790 range next season.

For whatever reason, his swing took a step back this year and pitchers know how to attack him, and based on his comments in the DP a couple weeks ago, it seems like he doesn’t think he needs to change anything.

I don’t really think people are wrong to distrust him. I also don’t think someone would be wrong for trusting him.
I think the thinking is more
that the smaller size is also the more recent sample, and if Stewart’s problems are the result of pitchers adjusting to the flaws in his swing, the more recent sample is going to be the more predictive one until he makes some adjustments…

There's no way to prove it.
Just look at his career numbers. 2011 is way off base than what he has been doing, and you can’t blame a decrease of .350 OPS on pitchers “figuring him out”. The book on Ian Stewart has been out since 2009. He was mired by inconsistent playing time and injuries.

and still be well above average at the AAA level. And that’s only magnified by CS park effects.
Everyone knows about the vast gulf between even the highest level of the minors and the majors.
Just depends on how you define "lose it"
I was referring to it meaning “lose the feel of playing baseball.”
I’m not going to argue semantics though. People are going to hate/distrust Stewart in the offseason, while very few will defend him.

But I think a reasonable expectation is that he becomes a superutilityman in the mold of Ben Zobrist

I'm sure that spending a year in the Springs learning to catch is part of what
made his D so atrocious. Just getting opportunities at 2B/3B has got to help immensely.
I think they’ll hand out one large contract and then focus on those “Mark Ellis-type” signings this offseason. It’ll depend on whether that large contract goes to an infielder, outfielder, or starter that determines whether Pacheco has a shot at starting. Personally, I’d like to see Stewart and Pacheco battle it out in ST.

We get rid of Wigginton, and he’s our backup CI. But that’s it probably.

And guys like EY2 who have mastered the art.
I just think on the whole, they’re overused and end up doing more harm than good. Even if guys aren’t juiced up and hitting the ball out left and right turning a baserunner into an out or letting a pitcher throw pitcher’s pitches to the 3rd and 4th batter isn’t a good strategy move.

You’re taking a lot of pressure off the pitcher, catcher and defense. It’s not always about piling up steals, but about having several guys in the lineup who are a threat to run.

Sometimes having a “fast guy” on first is a huge asset because he distracts the pitcher. Once he actually steals 2nd though (or makes an out attempting to), that distraction goes away (particularly with 2 outs). The catch-22 is that you do have to establish yourself as a stolen base threat for this to work.

Stolen bases aren’t the cornerstone of a good offense, but they are an important component of a good offense. Like a good sac bunt, they’re an important arrow to have in your quiver when you need them. It was also the most disappointing season I’ve seen in the almost three decades I’ve been following pro baseball. Bad teams playing badly is tolerable. Seasons going south due to key injuries happen. This was completely different.
I suspect 2011 will just be a year we all forget rather quickly.
