Predicting the 25 Man Opening Day Roster
Well as we move into the off season and as other teams finish out their seasons and the playoffs I thought it would be a fun exercise to predict the 25 man roster for opening day in 2012.
So here it goes:
With Tracy as manager we know (as shown with the 2010 opening day roster without Fowler) that even opening day is not immune to MATCHUPZ, though opening day "starters" will score for more than the bench players.
So scoring looks like this:
1 Point for each correct person on the 25 man roster. (Up to 25 points)
1 Point for a "starter." This includes the 8 position players that start on opening day as well as the opening day starter, along with the closer. Middle relievers and set up men do not count as starters, as too fluid and often not announced. For outfield, you can specify LF/RF/CF but they will be counted as 3 OF spots, as it is not fair to penalize someone for putting Cargo in left and him starting the season in right. (Up to 10 points)
1 extra point for correctly predicting a person that is currently not in the Rockies system or is not under team control for next year. This includes (corrections are appreciated if I make a mistake): Kevin Millwood, Mark Ellis, JC Romero and Aaron Cook.
Without further to do, my picks:
C: Chris Iannetta
1B: Todd Helton
2B: Mark Ellis
SS: Troy Tulowitzki
3B: Ian Stewart
OF: Carlos Gonzalez
CF: Dexter Fowler
OF: Josh Willingham
BE: Jason Giambi
BE: Jordan Pacheco
BE: Jonathan Herrera
BE: Wilin Rosario
BE: Seth Smith
Opening Day SP: Mark Buehrle
P: Jason Hammel
P: Jhoulys Chacin
P: Drew Pomeranz
P: Alex White
P: Edgmer Escalona
P: Matt Reynolds
P: Esmil Rogers
P: Matt Belisle

CL: Rafael Betancourt
Hardest choice for me was leaving Blackmon off of the opening day roster, but will probably be back in the minors to get back into baseball. Also I believe Wandy will not be moved so he will probably be the opening day guy in Houston, so the FA RH OF will get the start. In general I don't think there will be much change this off season. I think there is an uneasiness in the FO that they need to spend money this off season to show that they are committed to winning. Getting someone like Buehrle would be huge as it wouldn't cost a ton, but the name recognition would be large. I do think the Rockies will inquire heavily on someone as high as Reyes, with the plan to move him to second or third, but I doubt Reyes would want that and along with the ridiculous money he'll get, there is no way we sign him. I think they do spend money but sit around the same payroll, and wait to see how 2012 goes and then go after the wealth of talent that is in the 2013 FA class.
Deadline will be the last day of the playoffs, you may edit your posts up until that point.

DOD sends CarGo, Dex and Nolan Arenado to the Rays for Evan Longoria, Ben Zobrist and David Price. Then sends CDI to Oakland for Michael Taylor. They let Ellis go, who is a type B FA, and pick up extra draft pick. They then over pay for Cuddyer and pray he can play in Coors.
The team is now full of gamers. Guys who will go all out to win every game everyday. The rotation get better as the summer rolls in with the returns of JDLR and Nicasio.
Rox had a shot at Longoria in the draft
And will NEVER get him back. Neither team would consider that deal. Ok COL would like it but an ace and an MVP caliber player???? If DOD could get that hed have this job for life
How dare you even mention a trade with CarGo in!
I would trade Pomeranz, Rosario, Fowler, for Longo.

I actually enjoyed your suggestion
(Making one of these that is not boring, disappointing, or unrealistic will be very difficult)
While the CarGo, Dex and Nolan Arenado to the Rays for Evan Longoria, Ben Zobrist and David Price won’t happen, I sometimes like to see stuff like that because it can get your mind thinking about smaller trades that might work which you otherwise never would have gone to. Sometimes you have to really go down to the level of asking youself “what is X player worth to Y team” to move things forward in your mind.
I’d argue this is not a bad rough draft.
I'm pretty disgusted right now!

Thanks
You never know how these big trades start but this one I had suggested certainly would never happen because its overweighted in the Rockies favor. However, Tampa tends to purge their roster a lot because of payroll issues and they will let each of those players go at some point as long as they get young, controlable players back. CarGo, Dex and Arenado fit that discription. So does a Chad Bettis and a Edwar Cabrera so lets add those two.
If O'Dowd pulled this off

My pipe dream of a roster that will never actually happen (but could with enough effort):

SS: Troy Tulowitzki
3B: David Wright
RF: Carlos Gonzalez

Trade Street for a couple of B-level prospects in what amounts to a salary dump, and then use that money plus the $9 million that came off the books for Cook to splash for C.J. Wilson. Convince the Mets that Blackmon is every bit as good as Fowler, and trade Blackmon + White for Wright. Keep Millwood around for depth, but in Spring Training make a Jason Hammel-type trade for Niemann.
Jason Giambi for player-manager in 2012!
How the world will end in 2012: George of the Roses builds a Machine that Pommels everyone with La Violencia during Whiteouts.
All of those are at least realistic except for the Wright trade...I think they'd demand quite a bit more than that.

O’Dowd sends Street and Herrera to St. Louis for Westbrook and Theriot. This lands us inexpensive pitching and a cheap alternative to Mark Ellis. Wigginton is sent to the Braves for Diaz for some outfield depth. Both trades provide some salary dump for the 2013 free agent class and fill some holes. A platoon of Stewart and Pacheco at third provides some stability while Diaz fills in for Seth Smith against lefties.
Come the summer De la Rosa and hopefully Nicasio will revitalize a suddenly venomous rotation of young guns to complement a potent offense to make 2012 a solid year for the Rockies.
Welcome to the Row
Solid first post. That last sentence made me really happy.
I was pretty disgusted after the Rockies season, but the rapid demise of a couple of AL East teams have helped with that.

Explanation: Without a better solution at second base, the Rockies and Ellis compromise with a 1 year, 3.5 million deal with a 4 million mutual option and a 250 K buyout of the option. The Rockies, in a 3 way deal, trade Ty Wigginton to the Mariners for Chone Figgins in a straight up salary swap, then flip him to the Marlins, eating 2 million. Afterwards, they trade Seth Smith and Huston Street to the Red Sox for Lars Anderson, Daniel Nava, Michael Bowden and 5 million dollars. The money saved from Smith, Wigginton and Street allows us to sign Cuddyer. We replace Spilborghs with Nava, and we give Bowden Street’s spot as everyone in the bullpen moves up a spot. Unfortunately, we cannot find a new third baseman so we stick with Stewart for the season with Nelson, who is out of options, as insurance. Cuddyer is signed for 3 years, 27-30 million, and we give Jackson a 4 yr deal worth somewhere between 45-50 million.
As with the lineups, Nelson subs for Stewart and Ellis, while Cuddyer occasionally plays 3B to give Nava and EY2 starts in the outfield. Rosario and Iannetta split the catching job, while Giambi spells for Helton. The organization decides to allow Wheeler and Blackmon to get regular starts in AAA, and Nelson and EY2 make the roster over Pacheco due to option years.Anderson is kept in AAA in case Helton is out for a period of time, as the organization decides to start giving him a possible look as a Helton replacement, though the organization expects Cuddyer to replace him. De la Rosa bumps one of Hammel, White or Pomeranz out of the rotation; whoever isn’t performing up to par. If each are performing well, then one of Bowden or Rogers gets bumped out of the roster. If every single pitching staff member deserves to keep their job, then White or Pomeranz get the 2010 Chacin treatment. The organization plans on Nicasio not returning until Sept 2012 and will only pitch him in the bullpen if he is way ahead of schedule.
2011: A new year and a new chance at a championship.
I'm going to make a 2nd correction
Switch out Nava for Alex Hassan in the trade (he’s a player the Rockies would target over Nava), and Jordan Pacheco does in fact make club.
2011: A new year and a new chance at a championship.
Wait, on the Wigginton-Figgins deal, I messed that up
The Rockies keep Wiggy’s salary, and the Mariners keep Figgins salary. Effectively, the Mariners eat Figgins deal to have Wiggy as a placeholder until they find someone better to start at 3rd. When the Rockies flip Figgins to the Marlins, they eat 2 million of Wiggintion’s former salary, gaining 2 million in flexibility.
2011: A new year and a new chance at a championship.

Probably not realistic but perhaps entertaining… Cubs get Pujols. Cardinals get Prince Fielder. Cardinals have to cut salary, trade Holliday to Rockies for Smith, EY2, and Street. Rox trade Alex White, Spilly, and Nelson to Astros for Wandy.
What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it's all about?
That deal would CERTAINLY not land us Matt Holliday.

This is tough one for me because I think that the offseason is going to bring quite a bit of change to the team.
This post doesn’t reflect that though.
C- Iannetta/Rosario split
1B – Helton
2B – Ellis (so many signs that the Rockies want Ellis back, which I don’t necessarily agree with but I digress, so I think he comes back reasonably cheap)
3B – Stewart (stopgap until Arenado’s ready in 2012, no need to land a big FA to play 3B)
SS – Tulo
OF – CarGo
OF – Dex
OF – Smith/Gomes platoon.
I really hope the Rockies land a better second baseman than Ellis. The team will have money to spend and I think it’ll go towards either a 2B or an OF.
IF – Herrera
IF – Giambi
OF – Smith/Gomes
C – Iannetta/Rosario
IF – Pacheco
SP – Jhoulys Chacin
SP – Jeff Niemann (or Edwin Jackson)
SP – Drew Pomeranz
SP – Jason Hammel
SP – Alex White
Rotation will be quite deep once JDLR and Nicasio come back.
One big problem with this post: No trades. I think the team NEEDS to make at least one trade this offseason, as they have the pieces to do it. Stay tuned.

Rockies give up – Huston Street, Seth Smith, Jason Hammel, Tim Wheeler and Joe Gardner. They take major league complimentary pieces to shore up Bullpen, OF and rotation. We take advantage of a huge year by Wheeler and a well thought of pitcher in Gardner for a hugely underrated player in Kevin Youkilis playing 3B and a fair amount of 1B.
Florida sends – Anibal Sanchez and Emilio Bonifacio
Rockies give up – Chris Nelson, Edgmer Escalona, Wilin Rosario, Christain Freidrich and Edwar Cabrera. Marlins like to have young and cheap options and there will have to be a decent prospect haul for Sanchez who has been a good pitcher for a couple of years now. We give up Nelson who still has decent potential but might not find a place on our team next year, Escalona a useful reliever with some good innings under his belt, Rosario a top catching prospect, Freidrich still a mid level pitching prospect and cash in on Cabrera’s value with this years performance.
Angels send – Alberto Callaspo
Rockies give up – Ian Stewart and Corey Dickerson. Stewart needs a change of scenery and maybe California is it.
Rockies sign Buerhle 2years/30M with a club option for a 3rd.
Rockies sign Francis 1year/2M with incentives
Jorge de la Rosa comes in for Pomeranz (to minors) or Francis (to long relief) depending on performance, Nicasio will probably need more evaluation to see if he is ready.
Weathers has a strong AFL and camp to make back end of the pen.
What happens to Alex White?
I don’t see him in any of the trades, nor in the rotation
It is pretty obvious
That he might need more time or need to get back in to a rhythm after the finger fully heals.
I feel like too many people want to write off White after 8 bad starts
And are starting to forget about him

He's in the rotation to begin the season.
Not sure why he’s being written off.

Well hopefully his bat will make up for the deficiency
I know you dont seem like a big fan of Youk but if he is playing half the time at 1st it might cut down on the injuries and if the Sox are willing to take some guys that we are looking to move in any case along with a couple prospects it might be worth it. I think that for Wheeler’s power he won’t be a good fit on the team swinging for the fences everytime and while I think Gardner could be successful here we have to give up something. Youk has 13M left on his contract with a 13M option year, which gives us flexibility if he doesnt work out. Plus he will be a Type A free agent at the end of the contract or extended option period, which will garner draft picks.
We trade for Placido Polanco
If the Phillies obtain Aramis Ramirez to play third, then Placido Polanco would be available to fill our hole at third. We should make the trade for him. He has one year left on his contract at $6.5 million.

The Rockies should add to their starting pitching to address the youth and inexperience of the in house starters. There is also the injury to De La Rosa, his return will be roughly July, and he will not be 100% until 2013.
The problem is that we can not afford any of the top pitchers either through free agency or in a trade. On the plus side, we have a lot of young, though inexperienced, arms.
Paul Maholm has been a solid starter for Pittsburgh. He is thirty. Last year he started 26 games, went 162 innings and delivered a 3.66 ERA. Not quite Mark Buehrle, but a lot cheaper.
We should also add Jeff Francis. in 2011 he started 31 games for KC, with a 4.82 ERA. He delivered 183 innings. The risk with Francis, given his history, is that he breaks down next year. A risk worth taking. If he can stay health until De La Rosa comes back it will have been worth it. If another pitcher breaks down next year, he can also step in there. He was a great team guy on his first tour here.
Huston Street is traded directly or indirectly for Placido Polanco. We trade or release; Aaron Cook, Kevin Millwood and JC Romero.
We have a number of young arms in the farm system that probably will not be ready at the start of this year. This includes Drew Pomeranz, Christian Friedrich, Tyler Matzek, Peter Tago, Chad Bettis and Clayton Mortensen to name just a few.
This could be a competitive lineup. There is not as much depth as one would like. The budget would be reasonable and we would not have stripped the minors of talent. We would have pitching talent to trade during the year if an injury arose.
Hitting – average, Fielding – excellent, Starting pitching – inexperienced but talented, Relief pitching – strong.
In 2013 Wilin Rosario ( C ), Hector Gomez (2nd) arrive, as will Nolan Arenado (3rd) in 2013 or 2014. The young pitching matures and out of eight to ten young arms the Rockies find five solid starters. A couple of other youngsters make their case as well.

Somehow I just have the feeling that the rockies are not going to try to make a big splash in free agency. As 2012 is not a year we are really going to contend in without prospect success, I get the sense they give guys like Blackmon, Field, and Pacheco a chance over guys that don’t really have potential in (Insert FA OF here), Herrera, and Wiggington. This is a lineup that can compete until the help (aka. JDLR, Nicasio, Rutledge, Bettis, Arenado) gets here midseason. And no players that block the way for more talented up and comers. I did add Niemann not sure the package it would take to get him but Wheeler and a low level guy might do it. I also traded Street in this scenario. I have no idea the return, but I just want someone (Brothers gets the shot at CL) else a chance. EY2, Herrera, Nelson, Wiggy, Spilly, Cook, and Millwood,, as well as Romero
o woops, to finish that last sentence.
…….Will either be sent for a stint in the springs or will not be invited back
