Colorado Rockies Offer Jamie Moyer Minor League Deal - MLB Daily Dish
This needs to happen. NEEDS to happen. I, for some stupid reason, have been wanting Jamie Moyer to pitch for us for like 5 years now. I figure it's all house money anyhow with Moyer, so why not?
Downside: He's not guaranteed a MLB spot, if he accepts, so it might be hard to get him into the commercials.

I can see the commercial already
With Helton taking on the role of youngster and Moyer in Todd’s usual role of the old man.
We've officially moved from

I love it
@junkstats Moyer has 2 career sacrifice flies. They were nearly 22 years apart, in 1987 and 2009.

Follow-up
Craig Biggio played his entire 20-year career in between Jamie Moyer’s two career sacrifice flies.

Waste of time & effort
but hopefully no payroll money.
Rockies need to get serious about this season & forget about “novelty item” signings like this. What a joke.
2012 has to be a better year. Doesn't it?
It's not an offer to play
It’s an offer to be the de facto Sky Sox pitching coah.

CR: Have you pitched in the Majors a long time?
JM: Yep
CR: Do you think you can teach kids how to actually pitch and hit spots instead of throwing the ball?
JM: Maybe
CR: Do you still want to pitch?
JM: Sure, why not?
CR: Here’s a minor league contract offer. You could make the team
CR (thinking): The Sky Sox team to help coach

Yeah I was thinking this too.
I wouldn’t mind him showing our youngsters how to throw a cutter.

This whole offseason has been a joke.
They’ve just been screwing around. It’s insult to all of the fans. I’m so tired of this team. Gawd.

What on Earth are you talking about?
Because they made an offer to some guy to help mentor our young pitchers you say the off-season has been a joke?
I’d say the off-season has given us a fighting chance to have an excellent team next year. If we can top it off by trading an arm or two for a good 2B, I’m in absolute Heaven.

After inactive offseason after inactive offseason....
I’m glad they’re shaking things up. It was well past time. The only guy who’s gone who could potentially come back to haunt us is Stewart (although it’s more likely he won’t). Otherwise, no major parts have left and some interesting guys are coming in. And I do love the Cuddyer signing.
Have we gone from pretenders to potential WS Champs? Nope. But we’re better now than were were in September.
need a hand out of the chasm?

This really takes me back...
to when I was an Orioles fan and they brought in Moyer to be a veteran innings eater along side the young pitching studs Mike Mussina and Ben McDonald.
Yeah, that was 19 years ago.

Quick, Andrew.

Jamie Moyer throws a cutter.
Who else do we have that throws a cutter? I thought one of our recent additions did.

It's a crazy world we live in when.....
starting pitchers are falling from trees and a decent second baseman can’t be found.
I don't understand why everybody is pushing so hard to get a second baseman...
Almost every team has its holes. 2B and C look to be ours, but the rest of the team looks pretty solid.
"I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun."
because it's basically been a hole for the entire existence of the team
and we’re just tired of it
arenado: it's Rockie for future
I was open to the idea of trading Smith for Prado...
with the addition of one outfield prospect, but at this point I see no way the Rockies should pursue another second baseman. Sure there’s been a hole at 2B for a while, but Rockies’ fans have had a chance to watch an outstanding 1B and now possibly an all time great SS. I tend to be more positive than most fans, and know that this team is seriously going to compete in the coming years… with or without a 2B trade.
I also believe that EYJ can be just fine at 2B given a solid number of ABs. All-Star? Probably not. Offensive threat? Absolutely.
"I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun."
i do agree with you about ey2
caught my share of flak for that recently, let me tell you
arenado: it's Rockie for future
Most people will disagree about EYJ.
He hit .297/.384/.391 in his last 64 ABs, and stole 10 bases.
While his .247/.342/.298 clip for the year isn’t amazing… if he keeps up a .350+ OBP I am totally fine with him being our starting 2B. Not to mention if he got 400+ ABs he’s capable of stealing 50+ bases. We’ve been missing a solid speedster on the bases to disrupt the opposing pitcher!
"I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun."
I really don't think C is a weakness, honestly

Some people would say differently...
I believe Ramon Hernandez is going to be a nice surprise. He hits a lot of the better pitchers in our league VERY well, and hopefully Wilin pans out.
"I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun."
Oh, and I got to ask
Is Vizquel available for 2B. Lets see if we can put together a team full of players who have played in three decades.
4 decades for Vizquel and Moyer
And then add some players who weren’t born when they made their debuts

vizquel might be the only player who would be a worse hitter
than any of our internal options, while also being a better defender

The Rockies wanted to affect the mean age of the pitching staff without changing the median?
I love this, if only for its potential as a teaching tool for very basic statistics.
"Are they called the Rockies because they rock?" - 7 y.o.
I like this
because of the fact that Moyer is 8 months younger than me and can possibly play in the major leagues makes me feel younger.
Of the 21 pitchers on the 41 man roster 9 was born after Moyer made his major league debut on June 16, 1986.
I think just having his presence in spring training is worth a minor league contract.
Chances clearing cap space and acquiring close to a dozen youngish arms are a prelude to filling holes at second and third?
I think fairly good. Pitching market is incredibly thin, and we have more arms than we could ever use, even for good camp competition. Offseason isn’t over yet.
