Monday Rockpile: Rockies Banking on 2012 Bringing Maturity Through Leadership

So far this offseason, while the Rockies have done anything but sit on their hands, there has been one message ringing loud and clear from the front office: The clubhouse culture needs to change. This tells us a handful of things, both implicitly and explicitly:

Explicitly, the team wants Men accountable for their own job performance. Guys that will take the extra BP, seek the help they need, or just figure out SOMETHING that will get them back on course when they hit the skids.

Implicitly, this team has been trying to build something new that can't really be quantified. Bringing in Michael Cuddyer and trading away Ian Stewart (et al) while happily letting Troy Tulowitzki run his "Camp Tulo" under the eye of Jason Giambi with 2 potential impact prospects in Nolan Arenado and Josh Rutledge - it's painfully clear that this team is looking for leadership.

A lot of the search for leadership needs to start at the top, first. A lot of scrutiny needs to fall on Jim Tracy, as we've only really discussed the players themselves thus far. Now, there are a lot of criticisms I have with Jim Tracy that I could likely list, if given the motivation, but I'm going to save that for an article sometime next season when I'm REALLY upset.

I think I can boil my beef with the current manager down to a very specific game, many years ago.

Thursday, April 13th, the Colorado Rockies won the rubber game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-3. Josh Fogg got the win, and Brian Fuentes the save.

Come the 9th inning, the Rockies were up 4-3. Matt Holliday led off the 9th inning by squirting a pinch-hit groundball straight down the LF line against Arizona closer Brandon Lyon. After a Cory Sullivan punchout, Clint Barmes also doubled into the corner, giving the Rockies an invaluable insurance run before bringing on closer Brian Fuentes.

This makes me wonder why Holliday was PHing in the 9th inning when he should've been starting, as he pretty much won the job in 2005 (with an overall .866 OPS) (actually, this isn't entirely fair, as LF Choo Freeman's 1 hit on the night was a key RBI double).

Well, you see, the night before, in the 4th inning, Matt Holliday cost the Rockies a run. With the bases jacked, the Diamondbacks had just intentionally walked Danny Ardoin to get to pitcher Jeff Francis. Their plan backfired, however, when Francis punched the 2-1 pitch down the LF line for a base hit. Atkins scored easily, and Holliday, running on the pitch, shifted into neutral and just coasted home. 2 runs in, leadoff hitter on, come on, let's drive one more in, right?

Wrong.

Star-divide

You see, Catcher Danny Ardoin wasn't exactly the best baserunner, and when Dbacks LF Luis Gonzalez remembered this, he fired to 3B to catch Ardoin trying to stretch, and limited the damage from the pitcher getting a hit. Shame that it was a Heads-Up play against us, but at least 2 runs scored, right?

Wrong.

Holliday, who had clearly dropped out of gear, had not crossed home plate by the time the out at 3B was made, as he clearly thought that Ardoin had stopped at 2B and Gonzalez had just tossed it in to the cutoff man. As he crossed the plate after the out was made, only Atkins' run counted.

So Clint Hurdle benched him. It was abrupt, it wasn't a hush hush thing we found out about 2 weeks later (Etkin reported the reasoning for the benching the next day, April 14th), and it clearly served a purpose.

See, a lot of people this season commented on how the Rockies just looked lifeless out there. No fire, no spark. Poor fundamentals, and just a general lack of effort. Now, say what you will about Hurdle - hell, say whatever you want, it was time for him to go in 2009 and it was absolutely right for him to go. But I'll tell you this: you never hear the above complaints about hustle and life from a Clint Hurdle baseball team.

(I actually can't help but wonder if it wasn't really that Clint Hurdle was a bad manager, but after a World Series appearance, suddenly he felt the burden of different expectations. Maybe if the Rockies had played tight, competent baseball for the past 4 years like the 2007 team had, the Rockies might have brought home their first division title in 2009 and not made complete fools of their fanbase for the past 2 seasons.)

So past complaints about the manager aside, the team also needs leadership within its own ranks, and has for awhile, at least among the North-American-born players.

I say this with all respect to Todd Helton; the guy has been a class act and real shining star among Denver athletes, but you just never hear much said about this potential aspect of his personality. I mean, when you Google "Todd Helton Leader", you end up with mostly things like "League Leader" and "Leader Boards" - which is still pretty boss, but not what we're looking for. But you might remember 2007, when the Rockies beat Arizona in game 162 on a bizarre comebacker to closer Manny Corpas that he made an off-balance sidearmed throw to 1B to record the final out en route to a play-in game for the NL Wild Card. While Helton was in the midst of the screaming moshpit near the mound, there was one voice yelling "We haven't won anything yet! We still have one game to go!" and that was Troy Tulowitzki's.

It seems a bit easy to slap Tulowitzki with the "leader" tag, seeing how he just got saddled with the 10th largest contract in MLB history and will be here until he actually turns into Cal Ripken Jr., but if you haven't seen it yet, Tulowitzki WANTS this team. And the organization wants him.

We talk a lot about how having Jason Giambi on an NL roster makes no sense, and how he's just the chummy buddy for the whole team and all that. It's totally valid. But maybe Giambi wasn't brought in for the whole team. Maybe he was brought in for Tulo, to help mentor him on his route to SuperStardom (hey, laugh, but you might remember that 2nd year MLB players have to go through a seminar on "how to behave now that you're a public figure and are getting paid a whole bunch of money" - I imagine there's a certain grace required in becoming an idol like Tulo is becoming).

Perhaps the Rockies want more out of this Zillion Dollar Contract than just excellent production and borderline HoF numbers (in the event that there's more available) - they want somebody who is really going to go down as Mr. Rockies. Again, with all due respect to Helton, maybe Tulowitzki's infatuation with Derek Jeter extends to wanting to be The Captain and to create an organizational culture that breeds players who really want to Win rather than just not get fired.

Helton always led by example. He never screams at umps, he never makes offseason headlines, and he's batted .323 over the course of his career. He grinded through every at bat, he'd hit the ball to both fields regardless of power, and there was never a play he wouldn't dive for at 1B (well... maybe not so much recently. Healthy Helton = Productive Helton). The guy played the prime of his career on rosters with mistakes, never-gonna-be's, and Jeromy Burnitz (hey, he was good that one season) and you never heard him complain.

Tulowitzki is leading through all of those methods as well, but while he is already the best player around, he's actively and intentionally working to make those around him better as well. Tulo might not throw the organization under the bus for poor play, but he certainly makes it known that it isn't acceptable.

It would seem the team has found their leader, and now they just want guys who will get in line behind him.

I watched the Xmas Special for Downton last night.

It gives me hope for Series 3, The Series 2 finale and special make up for most of the crap that was Series 2. I just hope Series 3 isn’t focused on some obstacles preventing Mary and Matthew from getting married. If it is, I’m done with it. The best things would be for it to start in 1921 after the new baby is born, Matthew and Mary are married, and there is a cease fire in the Irish War for Independence.

I remember the Bucs Dugout interview being linked earlier.

Thanks for re-posting it. If I recall, it was before the Eliezer Alfonso Batting Cleanup, so the eerie parallels to Jason Phillips (backup catcher ends up batting cleanup) didn’t stand out when I first read it.

Also, I don’t remember him making any odd excuses, like benching a player for not being “baseball savvy.” I think that’s probably more because the LA media was harder on him than the Denver media was, rather than an improvement in his decision-making, however.

I personally think it’s incredibly demotivating for a player to be benched after they make a mistake like that. For clarification, I think it’s different when a manager pulls a player for not hustling down the 1b line or something (especially if the play is literally just a single and has no run scoring implications). But for a case like this with Holliday, I’m willing to bet that these guys are harder on themselves than anything. When Holliday crosses home plate and sees there wasn’t a run scored, I bet he knows more than anyone he messed up. IF he doesn’t – you could make the case that it was viewed as Ardoin’s fault for not holding up I guess, then I think a manager should confront the player and clarify what happened, but not necessarily bench them when the drive for redemption is highest.

I vaguely recall things similar to this happening a couple of times this past season where a player like Chris Nelson or EY2 would do something like strike out in a high leverage situation and then get benched the next day. There could be a number of factors that contributed to this so I can’t fully comment on the decision, but ultimately I think one of the better ways to hold players accountable isn’t to bench following a screw-up, or a bad play, but to let them play the next day.

Getting benched...

For making an out (read: failing) in a high leverage situation be it by strikeout or another means, something that happens approximately 70% of the time to all players – even HOF’ers – is not the same thing as being benched for a lack of hustle. While your point regarding the former is well-taken – benching after failing in a high leverage situation may serve to errode a player’s confidence and is moreover just pointless, it doesn’t hold true for a benching for failure to hustle. Holiday’s lackadaisical effort cost the team a run in a situation that was wholly within his control … run the damn play out.

A manager being able to understand the difference between these situations is what we don’t have.

You don't bench Holliday in that situation to make him feel bad about what happened

You bench him to (try to) make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Wait, what's his real name? We should make a joke out of that.

by BrandonHawpe on Jan 2, 2012 10:59 AM MST up reply actions

I understand that, my point though was that I don’t think it really ensures that never happens again and I don’t think it ‘helps’ motivate a player to make sure it never happens again. He would (or should) be motivated enough already. All the benching will do is just prevent him from utilizing that motivation. It’s just a theory of mine, but typically simplistic punishments do little to motivate anyone…

I don't look at it as a simplistic punishment
He would (or should) be motivated enough already.

Clearly he wasn’t, shoulds and shouldn’ts aside, or he would have run the play out in the first place. Baseball is such a game of “little things” that a manager needs to make it clear to his whole team that top effort, and top focus is required all the time. This is the message Hurdle was sending. The benching probably would have been more effective though if Holiday’s run did count (“Do you realize what you nearly did there?!?! Take a game off!”), but none of us would remember it now.

Yeah, but you're benching your best hitter under the intention of teaching him a lesson he could probably learn without costing your team offensive potential in a baseball game.

This is the kind of shortsighted, selfish thinking on Hurdle’s part that annoys me so greatly about him, and it was ultimately one of the straws that broke the camel’s back between his relationship with the team when he started benching Tulowitzki.

There are three obvious ways to handle such a mistake without thinking too far outside the box:
1. Teach a lesson by punishment.
2. Teach a lesson by trust.
3. Ignore the entire thing.

Whether or not you think that benching Holliday wasn’t to “make him feel bad”, it most certainly WAS to make the team weaker to motivate him not to do that again. Hurdle’s attitude here is basically “I’m going to put out a lineup with a worse chance of winning in order to teach a lesson to a single valuable player”. I find this attitude unbelievably idiotic, and let’s be honest, if a manager put out a lineup card without Matt Holliday on it for any other reason than this, people would be complaining because it’s a manager’s job to put the team in the best position to win every game. Except, apparently, when you’re teaching a player to be more mature on the field. Then it’s just dandy.

I do not believe the event should be ignored. I believe a good manager gets a coach or a veteran player or even himself to ensure that the player is aware of his mistake, is aware of the context of his mistake, and is aware that the player already let his team down, and won’t have to worry about letting his team down again unless he makes more mistakes. I believe a BAD manager tells the player he’ll be letting his team down another day while he sits on the bench and can’t help the team win.

Building off of your point, between the specific player’s ability to recognize their mistake, the manager’s ability to bring the problem to the players attention (without punishment), and team leader(s) offering support, advice, stressing accountability, whatever, I don’t think a benching is required. Players aren’t out there to slack off and cost their team runs.

Assuming that players don’t want to just slack off, assuming that they care, assuming they feel accountable, and assuming that they want a chance to prove they care (I realize that there may be a lot of assumptions here but I don’t think any of them are a stretch and some probably aren’t even assumptions), then by benching the player for a mistake like this, you strip them of the ability to redeem themselves. Furthermore, the above incident with Holliday is a unique one. This wasn’t a guy who was known for not hustling or caring, and this wasn’t a common action like running to first base or hustling to catch a fly ball – it was a more unique situation created by Holliday slowing up at home plate as well as the catcher attempting to grab an extra base. People want to talk about sending a message to the rest of the team that laziness won’t be tolerated. I support sending that message but it’s highly debatable whether benching a dedicated player for a momentary lapse sends that message and it may in fact send an entirely different message.

There are a number of factors that go into a benching

And we don’t always get to see them.

If Holliday was truly be lazy and not running hard for no other reason than not being baseball aware, yea he deserved the benching. It is a typical Hanley move.

To blame it on the tail runner, I don’t think that is truly right under especially under the Hurdle desire to always hustle and push the opposing defense. But, what is rule 3? in baseball: don’t make the first or the last out at third base.

From this particular incident, I think both Holliday and Ardoin can share the blame.

But, to the original post, hustle your arse and be held accountable. Don’t play like you’re trying to not lose, play to win. Show some drive, show some heart, show that you are lucky enough to be playing the Game.

This line
A lot of scrutiny needs to fall on Jim Tracy, as we’ve only really discussed the players themselves thus far.

While I don’t go much for the “clubhouse chemistry” as an important factor in winning baseball games, isn’t that exactly the manager’s job? It seems like GMs do the opposite of what makes sense: team plays badly? Fire the manager, can’t fire the whole team! Clubhouse chemistry is perceived as bad? Fire the whole team!

by controlled_slide on Jan 2, 2012 9:52 AM MST reply actions

Fire the manager or the team?

That’s a thought I’ve had so many times in the past month… it seems like instead of firing the manager the organization really did fire the whole team this time.

The only thing I come up with is that O’Dowd and his staff know a lot more about what goes on inside the clubhouse than we do. He also knows what Jim Tracy does outside of the dugout a lot better than we do. I guess we’ll know by June or so if he’s right. Crow is especially tasty when your team is playing better than you thought they would :-)

I think a hands-off manager would be a better fit.

"leader like Tulo"?

I’m not at all convinced Tulo is a good leader (yet). Passionate. yes. Driven, incredibly,. But a good leader who can bring out the best in others around him? I don’t see the evidence. This is where a good manager and coaching staff can help a lot.

We do, except for one word: good :-)

But a hands-off manager is not what we need. Someone who can deal with Tulo and figure out how to turn that passion and drive into wins is what we need and I don’t think hands-off gets it done.

Anyone still want Edwin Jackson?
Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York reports that free agent Edwin Jackson is seeking a five-year contract.
On top of that, “E-Jax” wants around $12 million annually. It’s a sky-high asking price, but he’s one of the few remaining reliable starters on the open market and might be able to land something close by waiting until teams get even more desperate. The 28-year-old right hander had a 3.79 ERA and 148/62 K/BB ratio in 199 2/3 innings this past season between the White Sox and Cardinals.

And if it does, I would jump all over it. There are still three high quality starters out there in E-Jax, Kuroda, and Oswalt. One will become more affordable. Too bad I don’t see the Rockies opening the wallet for any of them, even if prices become more reasonable.

Where did this come from?
Edwin Jackson would be a really nice fit for the Colorado Rockies as an innings-eater, but as of today, there is no room within the Rockies’ budget for him.

So says Buster Olney, but is he just throwing it against the wall to see if it sticks?

I agree that we could use jackson, and think the 3yrs/$35 million range is palatable, but he may be getting more than that.

How is Technorati Authority calculated?

Authority is calculated based on a site’s linking behavior, categorization and other associated data over a short, finite period of time. A site’s authority may rapidly rise and fall depending on what the blogosphere is discussing at the moment, and how often a site produces content being referenced by other sites.
The new Authority calculation differs from the past version, which measured linking behavior over a longer 6 month timeframe. Please note that links in blogrolls don’t count towards Authority, as they are not indicative of interest in relevant content; we stopped including blogroll links in August 2008.

A few random comments

1. Unless Tulo plays 20 years, hits 800 home runs, and is a first-ballot hall of famer, Helton will ALWAYS be Mr. Helton to me (hardly unbiased, since we’re both Vols). He doesn’t appear to be a vocal leader, but perhaps he simply isn’t a public leader. So far, it’s hard to see that Tulo’s leadership is having any impact.
2. Accountablilty is great, but when there’s little if any at the top (from ownership on down), it’s a little tough to create it in the clubhouse. You hold owners accountable by refusing to continue paying for a crappy product – obviously the rest of the accountability has to start with them.
3. Benching may work for some players under certain circumstances, and be totally counter-productive for others. It’s the manager’s job to know how to handle each personality. Most importantly, the player needs to know specifically WHY he’s being benched. My suspicion is that Hurdle’s biggest downfall was his inability to figure out how to best handle Tulo. It’s pretty obvious that Tracy is pretty clueless about which buttons to push for certain players, but at least they weren’t/aren’t his superstars.

by volduck on Jan 2, 2012 11:36 AM MST reply actions

The players/manager dynamic is an interesting situation

for the Rockies.

Who really runs the team?

Tulo & Cargo are the future of the franchise. Do they effectively have veto power over who the manageer is or how long he stays?

There are historical parallels. Larry Dierker was a very successful manager (in terms of W-L’s and playoff appearances) in Houston, but was run off because he couldn’t get along with Biggio & Bagwell. Hurdle left here after having issues with Tulo (swining at first pitches, IIRC).

I don’t really know what the right answer is. It’s a tough issue to address.

by maris61 on Jan 2, 2012 12:18 PM MST reply actions

It might ultimately comes down to production.

If the team is contending, players with long contracts are going to have a lot of sway. After a few losing years though, particularly if the “star” players aren’t playing all that well themselves, the front office basically has nothing to lose and can override the “veto”.

Sometimes with Tulo, I get the sense that he wants to be a leader and has a tremendous amount of drive, but doesn’t know how to channel it and especially doesn’t know how to transfer it to others. In that sense (and that sense only) Tulo needs to attend “Camp Tebow” :-)

he might carry a lot of say or be really influential because he’s the second best player on the team, but to me he doesn’t really come across as a real “leader” type. i think cargo is just happy to play and probably pretty laid back

Nats the latest to "double or triple" their TV revenue

According to MLBTR. This is going to become — HAS become — a huge problem for MLB. Back when it was just the Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, and maybe the Mets, it was tolerable because many good players just wouldn’t fit on those teams and fell to the mid-range and low-income teams. With the Angels, Rangers, Phillies and Nats (that we know about) joining the club, it’s becoming more of a 50/50 deal. Half the teams are going to have an extra $100 million or so sitting around from a TV contract, half not. That’s just an unbelievably large sum of money. Really doesn’t seem fair, and the luxury tax doesn’t even begin to address it.

I realize this is whining, and up until now lots of low-revenue teams have been been successful, but I think it’s going to get harder and harder. Those numbers are ridiculous.

Our metro area is only a couple million

Those cities have many times that, which is what generates the revenue projections for the TV network, and thus the willingness to pay huge sums for exclusive rights. What might save us is the regional nature of the Colorado sports market. Maybe if we became more like the Cardinals, and folks in Salt Lake, Albuquerque, and Boise became Rox fans …

Market.

When you play on the Eastern seaboard, you’re going to have fans spread throughout that entire chunk of real estate, from Florida to Maine, due to some relocation of peoples and what-not.

The Rockies, meanwhile, are likely an incredibly localized yet much smaller fanbase due to their limited amount of years in the league and overall area of influence. I’m sure there are piecemeal fans across the nation, but it’s not going to be anything like the influence of having roughly 1/3+ of the nation’s population all in that one stretch (and many fans relocated outside of that area, making their influence that much greater nationwide).

This is precisely the same reason (albeit to probably a lesser extent in the current case than in Atlanta’s historical case) that I’m a Braves fan and the team was good for so long. They gained huge advantages from their tv deal that they just don’t enjoy any longer. To be brutally honest, I’d like to see them regain that clout, for selfish reasons obviously.

Same is true on the western coast, to a much lesser extent. LA is huge. Not even including the rest of the state, you have a metro area of roughly 13 million (just using wiki).

Colorado and its surrounding states – 19.1 million, unless you include Arizona which barely shares a border. Even then, that whole area is 25.5 million for 752k sq. miles of land, with Denver roughly in the center. LA’s 12.9 comes in just 34k sq. miles. The chances of people being an Angels or Dodgers fan in that 34k is much higher than the chance an eastern Kansas native being a Rockies fan. Or some dude in northern Wyoming, or western Utah, or Phoenix, Tulsa, etc.

Different issue entirely, although it’s much easier to spend extravagantly when you figure you’re going to have a considerably larger chunk of people watching at home every night.

Liberty Media, the owner of my favorite team (a corporation) earned 9 billion dollars of revenue in 2010. Less than 1% of that revenue covered the 2010 Atlanta Braves salary. They still aren’t going to break a $100MM anytime soon, because that’s the approximate amount of money the team generates.

On everything that comes with operating a baseball team. That whole argument was scurrilous because it treated player salaries as the only expense that the team has and said the Rockies make X on player salaries so they can spend Y and still make a profit. The argument didn’t account for the scores of additional expenses involved in running a baseball team that eat into any profit.

The truth is that we have no idea how much the Monforts clear from the Rockies, but I’m pretty sure that it isn’t nearly as much as that argument was trying to prove.

Money doesn't buy championships...

Small market teams need to continue to draft and develop players well. Buying players with great resumes fails the majority of the time (ex: Werth, Dunn, Oswalt).

I believe.

by Lost Winter on Jan 2, 2012 4:59 PM MST up reply actions

Yes that's true

But my contention is the imbalance is now changing. It used to be a handful of teams had sky high payrolls, some of them screwed up their advantage, and the highest two were in the same division. Now there are ten teams with the ability to go up to 150-180 million without flinching. That’s 250 roster slots. Their FA dominance is going to start slopping over into the mid-range guys. In fact that’s already happening. For the 50% without the TV windfall the ONLY way to win is going to be the Rays model: Get VERY lucky several years in a row in the draft.

We were incredibly smart to lock up Tulo and Cargo.

Make what argument?

I’m not saying that the Yankees “buy championships,” but that it’s not stupid and patently false to mention that the ability to have a high payroll works as a huge advantage, not just to the Yankees, but to other teams as well. Thus, in essence, money does buy championships, as Roxman4ever noted.

I think that is a simplistic view. You need more than money to win a championship. Nevertheless, money is a huge advantage and a great start. I don’t think that it is fair at all to say that Roxman4ever’s quip is stupid or patently false.

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned here before, but I found it interesting who the Modesto Nuts chose as their new manager. He has a lot of experience in the minor leagues and from 2008-10 was the manager in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines. Last season he worked in Asheville under Joe Mikulik as the Tourists Hitting Coach. It will be interesting to see how Kyle Parker and Corey Dickerson develop under him this season. I’m excited to watch some of the hitters there this year, and to see if Tyler Matzek develops further.
