Rockies Acquire Marco Scutaro - MLB Daily Dish
Looks like it's a done deal! I'm sure Rox Girl has just oodles to discuss about this, but I'll go ahead and share my one thought:
OK, so the Rockies just made a change:
1. They acquired a player
2. They spent money on said player.
3. The player isn't redundant
4. The player is going to add 2-3 wins to the Rockies' season.
Well done, Dan O'Dowd. Well done.

The question of 2012 has been answered
This is not a rebuild year – it is a transition year to the age of Carlos and Tulo. If JDLR was healthy from the get go, the Rockies would get the press they had last year of division favorites. Now they get the best of both worlds – fighting with the underdog status and being just one mid seaason trade for a quality SP away from a team that can win a weak division and roll strong in the playoffs.
Offseason isn’t over, and DoD took some major risks, but so far it is playing well. And best off is the farm is still well intact to keep this moving.

Side note here
This morning the talk was trading EYJr for Turner. I was really sad cause I don’t see anything Turner has that a handful of guys already in the system have. Its not like I am a huge EYJr fan, but it is undeniable he has one tool that is unmatched in MLB. He also improved a lot second half last year and I love his attitude this offseason. He saw what happened to Stewart, Smith, Spilly… he KNOWS the writing is on the wall and he knows he can’t wait until ST to prove himself. He is doing what it takes now and I like that. If he can legitimately prove himself and not rely on sentiment from his father then keep him in purple pinstripes. I still believe he can be a game changer.

I'd much rather see EY2 in the 25th spot
His speed late in games is a game changer. I hope he gets a fair chance this spring training. I’m not all that impressed with Pacheco to be honest.
It's Jim Tracy's Fault.
Spoke to it earlier..
…but as someone that is clearly not a fan of EY2 it would be fun for him to embrace a role of a “havoc guy”. He basically never plays defense since he doesn’t have a position but works to become the best bunter/pinch runner in the league. A guy that comes in after the 7th and puts pressure on the pitcher to throw strikes and pressures the defense to not make a mistake.
If he really focuses on using his natural athleticism to become a superior drag/slug bunter (depending on the situation) I can see him single-handedly stealing a couple of W’s. With desperate errant throws sailing down the 1st base line and EY2 ending up on 3rd base. Crowd going insane…how fun would that be?
Just someone take his glove away from him.
by WhiskeyDrinkingMan on Jan 21, 2012 5:32 PM MST up reply actions
I absolutely hear ya
This is why I didnt want to see him traded for a duplicate replacement part. If he comes out in ST and flails, so be it, let him go. But if there is any chance he can add on as a 25th man and be .. lets look at this… 9th inning down by a run but the lineup has Blake/RH/Pitcher coming up
PH EY Jr.. slap a bunt single steal 2nd. Pachecho comes in and advances EYJr to 3rd… now all Giambi has to do is hit a mediocre fly ball to tie the game but is still a threat to win it on a long ball.
He can add value to the team once the position players are set.

I’m glad to end up with Scutaro for a 1/$6M than Kuroda ($12M) or Oswalt (~$8M).
well it stands to reason, right?
If you got Scutaro, there wouldn’t be any room for Tulo at short, so you might as well trade him.
And when Tulo is gone that leaves a big salary hole you need to fill, so why not take Crawford & Lackey?

So just to sum up....(The big moves only)
1) We’ve added Scuraro, Cuddyer, Blake, and Hernandez to the lineup. (Potentially a couple of others too but these are the four that have me most excited.)
2) We’ve added Moscoso, Outman and Chatwood (we’ll see where they start the season anyway) to the pitching mix.
3) We have only given up three pieces that prodeced an fWAR over 1.0 last season (Iannetta, Smith, and Ellis).
4) We’ve dumped a tremendous amout of trash/failed projects.
5) We’ve cut the payroll.
6) We have not given up a single solid piece on the farm and probably added a couple of guys here who won’t make the big league club out of ST.

Hey guys, you want to know something funny?
We got Scutaro for basically a salary dump. The Giants are still going to be starting Brandon Crawford at shortstop this year. If the Red Sox were truly just looking to dump Scutaro, the Giants could’ve just bought their new starting shortstop for 6 million dollars and a AAAA arm.

Average AVG, Solid OBP, Low SLG. Typical slap-hitting MI.
Decent glove. Better at 2B than SS. Arm and Range are more suited for 2B.
Old, but on a one year deal.
Solidified the SS position in Boston for a few years after they had nothing but failure after failure there, similar to what we have had at 2B, but a little better.

This is sarcastic/hipster right?
Cuz at the risk of ruining the joke, this is criminally unfair. There weren’t more than a half dozen better offensive players at SS last year than Scutaro, and he’s an ace 2B defensively. The $6 million we’re paying him is actually a bargain, while “what we’ve had” at 2B is less than replacement value (Mark Ellis for a few weeks excepted).

I don't know about sarcastic or hipster(?)
but he is a definite upgrade over Barmes/Herrera (the two with the most time at 2B over the last three years). Herrera’s and Barmes’ best comes to close to Scutaro’s average play, but even at 36 Scutaro’s ceiling is higher than any of the players that are ML ready.
Ummm. No.
He is not an ace 2B defensively. He had a career year last year, but his career numbers are .270/.338/.389. That’s exactly what I said Average AVG, Solid OBP, Low SLG. He’s only had an SLG over .400 for one year besides last year.
If you have some other stats that I am not aware of, feel free to include them. He is good, but the man asked for strengths and weaknesses. I gave him the truth.

2009 was actually a slightly better year
The sky high .379 OBP gave him a better wRc+ and wOBA than 2011. His largest recent samples at 2B, 2008 and 2010 get mixed reviews from UZR and TZ. TZ grades him really well in 2010, but below average in 2008. UZR grades him significantly below average in 2010, but then a little above in 2008.
He beats all of the in-house options significantly for 2012. And his OBP, combined with a second half Dexter, gives the type of table setting the team hasn’t had since 2007.
He's absolutely better than what we have.
I’m not knocking Scutaro. I’m very excited about this. I was just responding to someone who asked for strengths and weaknesses.
2009 and 2011 were both pretty good. He was a better hitter in 2011 though. Those 90 BBs from 2009 are a complete anomaly for him. It’s almost double his typical amount.

Yeah, I didn’t meant to seem like I was trying to contradict what you’re saying. It was essentially complete. Hopefully he likes the NL and it helps him stay at the 2011 level.
Ok.
I’m just making sure everyone knows that I’m not dumping on Scutaro. It’s a great pickup. The original post was just a look at who he is all around, as was asked for. I was being a little sensitive because I’m thrilled with this. If I wasn’t a little concerned about his age, i’d say that he is better than Prado hitting 2nd and playing 2B.

Definitely better defensively at second
Prado’s 2011 worries me a lot more than I would have admitted when advocating for his acquisition. It still could be just adjusting to a different position, or a funk year, but the cost to find out would be pretty high.
Also, his acquisition was a lot more appealing before Casey Blake and Cuddyer.
If you think about it
Instead of trading Seth Smith plus for Prado, we traded Seth Smith and Clayton Mortenson for Scutaro, his contract, Moscoso, and Outman. When the acquisition is looked at with the larger picture, the team makes so much sense (not that I really think Scoot was the target this whole offseason)

The off-season created the flexibility to lead to this type of move. The previous deals created both the payroll flexibility and provided the pitching depth needed to make an impact deal at some point during the off-season. Very nice job by DOD overall, and a good example of why it’s difficult to evaluate a lot of the smaller moves in a vacuum.

Way too early to tell. Only eight position players, two starters and four/five relievers are basically guaranteed spots right now
At least ten roster spots are up in the air.

Not a chance Nelson and Herrera make the team
Much more likely neither does. Pacheco is almost a given, and Scutaro’s experience at SS means there’s no need for either Nelson or Herrera. There’s LaMahieu too.
by BostonTransplant on Jan 21, 2012 7:01 PM MST up reply actions
This definitely pushed Herrera out of the picture
I think you’re right about DJLM and Pacheco over Nelson and Herrera. There’s not really a lot of point to letting Nelson rot on the ML bench if Blake plays well.
Nelson and EY2 do not have options remaining, and they aren't going to pass through waivers
I don’t think EY2 has a spot anymore but Nelson definitely does. I think DJ starts at second everyday in the Springs. If it were up to me, the bench is Nelson, EY2, Blackmon, Giambi, and Rosario, but the FO is likely to replace EY2 with Pacheco.
Your 2012 Colorado Rockies:freshly exorcised from Ty Wigginton
It would seem like EY2 could be traded for younger depth
DIdn’t realize Nelson is out of options, so I guess unless he bombs in ST he’ll be on the roster. Not a bad outcome for DJLM to get regular time at 2B in CS.
Wow. Then you and me are watching completely different games last year.
Pacheco’s hitting ability makes him orders of magnitude more valuable than Nelson in my book. The only thing Nelson had on him with ability to play SS, but that’s not as important any more. I do like EY getting the final roster spot though. If only to be our first baseman’s (whoever it might be) and right fielder’s personal pinch-runner.

EY would serve a purpose that none of the others couldn't fill
but I’d prefer the team just get it over with and trade him. He and a young pitcher could yield a nice return.
I don't think EY has much value.

If the Mets are as infatuated with him as is reported
then I could see squeezing decent out of them. A lot of teams will need middle IF depth closer to April. Doesn’t really matter what comes back unless something else goes out with him.
Why not trade EY2 for a decent reserve catcher?
like a Mike McKenry type of player?
Your 2012 Colorado Rockies:freshly exorcised from Ty Wigginton
Not a bad idea
who is slated to be the Springs catcher otherwise? Wouldn’t want another ML roster catcher.
Okay, I literally just dug this up off the free agent tracker because I wasn't sure
Eliezer Alfonzo is probably going to be released, and then you have Rosario, Pacheco, and Hernandez when you look at the 40 man You have Wilkin Castillo signed who’s a meh player, as well as Wil Nieves. The only other minor league catcher that played above AA is Lars Davis.
Your 2012 Colorado Rockies:freshly exorcised from Ty Wigginton
Assuming Pacheco ends up in AAA
probably doesn’t hard to have someone that allows him to play other positions, and is better than Nieves. Maybe Jaso? He has an option left.
Pacheco will probably make it over EY2
Jaso makes tons of sense. I wonder if the Mariners would pull the trigger on that deal
Your 2012 Colorado Rockies:freshly exorcised from Ty Wigginton
BRef and Fangraphs have him rated as slightly negative
If we acquired Jaso, I wouldn’t have a problem with him being the 2nd catcher for a while as Rosario gets a little AAA time. I feel like it would take a tiny bit more on our end though. Maybe one of those solid relievers in A+ like Woods or Yacko would do it?
I feel like if Jaso has an option, it makes sense for them to store Jaso in AAA while Montero and Olivo start, then when Olivo;s contract is up, they use Montero and Jaso as their primary catchers in 2013.
Your 2012 Colorado Rockies:freshly exorcised from Ty Wigginton
Isn't it much more fun
to try and figure out who’s going to play catcher at AAA as opposed to second in the bigs?
I am very pleased.
Given the option
and Ackley and Figgins, the trade probably wouldn’t make much sense.

Nelson has more upside than Pacheco, and Pacheco did not hit well in AAA
In my mind, Pacheco can wait as Nelson and EY2 get their last shots. He’s not some impact bat being held in the wings, and only OPS’d .687 in September. Let’s not get excited for him for the same reasons we got excited for Herrera.
Your 2012 Colorado Rockies:freshly exorcised from Ty Wigginton
Couldn't disagree more
Nelson’s upside is gone, didn’t pan out. He’ll turn 27 next season and is what he is. Pacheco meanwhile raked everywhere but AAA, while learning how to be a catcher, which is no mean feat. Everyone who watches him agrees he’s a ML hitter, while Nelson has no definable above-replacement skill.
To my eye, it’s not a given Nelson wouldn’t clear waivers if it came to that.
by BostonTransplant on Jan 21, 2012 8:20 PM MST up reply actions
He's had 205 at bats at the major league level!
And his minor league track record at the upper levels of the minors is much better than Pacheco’s statistically. Here are their first years in Triple A
Nelson, age 24, AAA: .313/.376/.492 (2010)
Pacheco, age 25, AAA: .278/.343/.377 (2011)
Let’s not completely give up on a ballplayer because they weren’t good in their first extended opportunity and for a lower upside player who hit a few RBI’s in his first callup. Pacheco will see MLB time next year regardless of whether he makes the opening day roster or not.

He isn't good at 2B.
That stats make him seem better than he is because his range is very good. Unfortunately, he has a terrible glove. He gets to the ball, but then he muffs the play. The stats show this, but the non-counting stats treat range equal to glove ability which I think is not a great way to assess a 2B.

But when I only think about their off season acquisitions, I think of them as power houses. Even with the Kubel signing. Ew.

I think the rotation will be better than we expect, and that the bullpen becomes a real strength late in the year.

Even if we wind up bringing up Arenado and Wheeler because of Blake and Helton injuries like I suspect there will be
Your 2012 Colorado Rockies:freshly exorcised from Ty Wigginton
I'm not setting it
I have run some preliminary simulations of the 2012 season using the actual schedule and depth charts for hitters (straight 5 man for starting pitchers until more unknowns are figured out on rosters) and the NL West looked something like this…
SF (86.8), COL (85.7), ARI (79.0), LAD (78.3), SD (70.3) … sniff test told me initially that Colorado was too high and Arizona too low. Then I saw Clay Davenport’s results of his simulations (not sure what kind) and he has ARI (87), COL (84), SF (83), LAD (81), SD (73).
But it sounds like you guys think the Rockies win around what my sim says they might. My sim hates the Arizona offense more than Clay’s system does.
I think 84 and 85 wins is about right at the moment.
However, if the rotation works out to be a top 1/2 MLB group, we take the West with 90 wins. We had the second worst production from starters in the NL last year. To me, this means that we were the second worst in MLB. We will beat that this year, but beating if by a major improvement will lock us in.
There are just too many questions in the rotation.

I'll say 79, and hope for a 2007-like miracle for the starting rotation
I would love to be off by 10 wins or so, but I still don’t think the starting pitching comes together soon enough for this team to contend. If I was confident that the offense could carry them early on, I would feel better. But I just don’t see the offense as being strong enough to pull that off.
by Northsider1964 on Jan 21, 2012 9:19 PM MST up reply actions
I think people don’t realize just how terrible our starting pitching was last year. There is no way we are worse than last year. We might be the same, but even that is a stretch.
Let’s look at a possible rotation of Chacin, Hammel, Pomeranz, Nicasio, JDLR/Others against last year’s freak show.
Chacin (our only good pitcher): 31 starts. We’ll say that he maintains, although he should improve. BREAK EVEN.
Hammel: 27 starts He showed promised at the end of the season. A return to 2011 form could net us a win. PLUS ONE WIN.
Ubaldo: 21 starts. Many of these were terrible. He ended up as a league average pitcher for Colorado. I think that DLR coming off of surgery can do that this year. BREAK EVEN.
Cook: 17 starts. Terrible. 74 ERA+
Rogers: 13 starts. Even worse. 64 ERA+
Pomeranz can improve on these two by two win in 30 starts. PLUS TWO WINS.
Nicasio: 13 starts. ERA+ 108. I think that he can at least maintain this. BREAK EVEN.
JDLR: 10 starts. Our best pitcher.
Millwood: 9 starts. Almost as good.
I think that Nicasio would fill in some of this space here. I don’t see him equaling what JDLR and Millwood did though. He comes close enough to only lose one win though. LOSE ONE WIN.
White/Mortenson/Pomeranz/Reynolds/Johnson: 21 starts. This motley crew were all below average except Mortenson, but he was actually below average as a starter. Whatever we patch together should be able to at least be able to break even with these guys. BREAK EVEN
I think, in a worst-case scenario, we are equal to what we put out last year. More than likely, I see a two win improvement from the rotation. If Chacin improves, Hammel takes off, Pomeranz beats league average, and the scrubs pitch at league average, we might be looking at a five to six win improvement from the rotation. That puts us in contention.

And while the team has added some starting pitching talent that I feel pretty good about long-term, none of it is guaranteed to contribute anything in 2012. Sure, stranger things have happened – and I hope a rotation falls into place early enough for this team to keep pace. But if I had to bet my house on it, I’m still putting this team a few games below .500 come October.

Because that’s how I see Scutaro. He’s gonna give us defense at 2nd as slick as Carroll did, and at least do as well at the plate as Jamey did the year he hit .300 for us. Scutaro may not hit .300, but he will walk and get a fair number of doubles. Compared to the black hole of dreck at 2nd last season, this is a GODSEND.
And to only give up Mortenson, wow! DOD is restoring my faith in him.
