Tuesday Rockpile: NL West Offseason in Review (So Far)

Yesterday marked the halfway point between Game 162 of 2011 and Opening Day 2012. With Troy Renck, Dan O'Dowd and most of baseball's front offices on holiday vacation, there has not been much news for us to chew on/eviscerate/overanalyze. So at the midway point, here's a quick summary of what the rest of the teams in the division have done thus far. The first half of the offseason includes the Winter Meetings, while the second half includes six weeks of Spring Training. So a large majority of the moves that will be made have been made.

***

Diamondbacks

Additions: RHP Trevor Cahill (trade, $3.5m in 2012, with $30mil owed through 2015, two club options over $13m), LHP Craig Breslow (trade, $1.4m), "LF" Jason Kubel (2/$15m), RHP Takashi Saito (1/$1.75m), IF Cody Ransom (MiLB)

Subtractions: LHP Joe Saunders, RHP Micah Owings, RHP Juan Gutierrez, LHP Zach Duke, RHP Jason Marquis, 1B/OF Xavier Nady, RHP Kam Mickolio (released). RHP Jarrod Parker (trade), OF Collin Cowgill (trade), RHP Ryan Cook (trade).

Returns: 2B Aaron Hill (2/$11m), SS John McDonald (2/$3m), SS Willie Bloomquist (2/$3.8m), C Henry Blanco (1/$1.2m), 1B Lyle Overbay (1/$1m), a healthy SS Stephen Drew?

Possible Future Moves: Nothing notable. Kevin Towers seems to have checked off the major items on his list.

What This Offseason Tells Their Fans: "We do not expect large regression despite many career seasons from players on the roster. Therefore, we will retain as much of that roster as possible and make suspicious overall moves with the intent of taking advantage of this now wide open contention window in the NL West. "

***

Rockies

Additions: RF Michael Cuddyer (3/$31.5m), C Ramon Hernandez (2/$6.4m), RHP Tyler Chatwood (trade), IF DJ LeMaheiu (trade), OF Tyler Colvin (trade), RHP Kevin Slowey (trade, $2.75m), OF Andrew Brown (MiLB), OF Jamie Hoffman (MiLB), C Wilkin Castillo (MiLB), C Wil Nieves (MiLB).

Subtractions: 3B Ty Wigginton, C Chris Iannetta, RHP Aaron Cook, 3B Ian Stewart (trade), RHP Huston Street (trade), 2B Mark Ellis, OF Ryan Spilborghs, C Jose Morales, RHP Kevin Millwood, 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff, LHP J.C. Romero, RHP Matt Daley, OF Cole Garner.

Returning: 1B Jason Giambi (1/$1m). Possibly Millwood or Romero.

Possible Future Moves: Potentially a low priced veteran starting pitcher and an infielder. Likely a trade of Seth Smith.

What This Offseason Tells Their Fans: "We are trying the addition by subtraction method as applied to clubhouse character, otherwise known as "Plan G." We are not in position for clear contention nor a complete rebuild, so we'll do moves as if we are both simultaneously."

Star-divide

Dodgers

Additions: IF Adam Kennedy (1/$0.8m), 2B Mark Ellis (2/$8.75m), RHP Aaron Harang (2/$12m), LHP Chris Capuano (2/$10m), C Matt Treanor (1/$1m), IF Jerry Hairston (2/$6m), RHP Shane Lindsay (MiLB), C Josh Bard (MiLB)

Subtractions: C Rod Barajas, 3B Casey Blake, 2B Jamey Carroll, C Dioner Navarro, RHP Vicente Padilla, RHP Jon Garland, RHP Hiroki Kuroda, IF Aaron Miles, RHP Jonathan Broxton, OF Jamie Hoffman, LHP Hong-Chih Kuo, RHP Mike MacDougal, LHP Dana Eveland (trade)

Returning: 1B James Loney ($4.875), OF Juan Rivera (1/$4.5), possibly MacDougal.

Possible Future Moves: Probably nothing. Ned Colletti has a habit of spending his budget early in the offseason. Unless Prince Fielder will take a two-year contract with deferred money.

What This Offseason Tells Their Fans: "We can't commit to too much long-term due to the ownership issue, but there's money to spend and we'll spend it on whatever players are willing to come here. We are positioning for a spending spree in the 2013-14 offseason."

***

Padres

Additions: RHP Huston Street (trade, $7m), RHP Edinson Volquez (trade, $1.625m), RF Carlos Quentin (trade, $7.5), RHP Brad Boxberger (trade), 1B Yonder Alonso (trade, $1m), C Yasmani Grandal (trade), OF Mark Kotsay (1/$1.25m), C John Baker (trade, $0.417m), LHP Alex Hinshaw (MiLB).

Subtractions: RHP Heath Bell, RHP Mat Latos, RHP Aaron Harang, OF Aaron Cunningham (trade), C Rob Johnson, 1B/RF Brad Hawpe, RHP Chad Qualls, LHP Wade LeBlanc (LHP), IF Alberto Gonzalez, OF Cedric Hunter, RHP Evan Scribner.

Returning: OF Jeremy Hermida (MiLB).

Possible Future Moves: 1B prospect Anthony Rizzo, named the Padres #1 prospect, is now their biggest trade chip with the acquisition of Alonso.

What This Offseason Tells Their Fans: "We aren't ready to contend. We are building towards the future, but we are willing to spend here and there on short term players to have at least a respectable on field product."

***

Giants

Additions: OF Melky Cabrera (trade, $1.25m), OF Angel Pagan (trade, $3.5). That is all.

Subtractions: OF Carlos Beltran, OF Pat Burrell, LHP Jonathan Sanchez (trade), CF Andres Torres (trade), RHP Ramon Ramirez (trade), IF Orlando Cabrera, OF Cody Ross, UT Mark DeRosa, RHP Guillermo Mota, OF Darren Ford, 2B Jeff Keppinger

Returning: IF Mike Fontenot (1/$1.05), C Eli Whiteside (1/$0.6m), a healthy C Buster Posey and 2B Freddy Sanchez?

Possible Future Moves: Telling a reporter that they are trying to sign Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum longterm, but not meaning it.

What This Offseason Tells Their Fans: "Now that we won the World Series and ousted Bill Neukom, we are going to make our fans jealous of the budget of every MLB team, including Oakland, by spending absolutely no money. To our loyal fans....suck it."

an aside,

Russel Wilson will be playing professional….Football

Looks like a back-up quarterback with a chance to catch someone’s eye and get an opportunity in a couple of years.

I’m not sure he has this type of prospect in baseball…Good luck to the guy, and give us our money back sucka!!

He will have to return the rest of his signing bonus if he doesn't return to baseball this summer.

Already had to give back some for playing football this year. Great athlete, interesting prospect, but a long ways out (in baseball). Football is definitely his best chance at making it in the “big leagues” in the near term.

Steady on!

A’s were a playoff team in the early 2000s. Hopefully with a sound revenue base (and even a radio deal!) they can return to their former glory.

I kind of like what the Padres are doing.

They were pretty scrappy last year, and if Volquez turns it around, the pitching will be solid. Their offense got a lot more intriguing and they have a major trade piece to get more pitching or offense if so desired. Street should do well for them too.

I'm not.

Volquez is a huge huge question mark. I’m just not sure about him. Also not sure about Alanso, who still needs to prove he isn’t an AAAA player. Grandal is the only true value they got back, but it will be a while before he makes an impact.

You don't think Grandal plays in the majors this year?

I looks like he’ll start in AAA, but if he does well down there, I don’t see a big reason to hold him back.

Although I still don’t expect him to contribute much this year. Either way, the players they lost this year are better than the one’s they acquired. Thus, I say they did poorly.

In order from best to worst winning percentage:

AL East: .546
NL East: .528
NL West: .511
AL West: .495
AL Central: .460
NL Central: .457

I think this speaks to some of the offseason moves.

No team is bad enough that it wants to completely rebuild. No team is good enough to take a risk to make the one big acquisition that is going to get them a championship this year. I think everyone, except perhaps the Padres, believes that they are capable of winning the division this year, in the same way that Arizona did it last year. And I think the Padres probably figure that they have a shot as well.

Who ... Castro?

Not even close …he will be 24 on Opening Day. And I don’t know what he signed for, but I am guessing it is nowhere near the $3.9 million we dropped on Matzek. They gave up two C prospects with some upside for a piece I am guessing they flip at the ASB for more prospects.

Castro would have been their #1 last year if not for the AGon trade

Maybe Friedrich is a bit of a better Comp but Friedrich hasn’t had any seasons as good as Castro’s 09-10

by TomCat009 on Jan 3, 2012 12:05 PM MST up reply actions

Aside from the fact they both sucked in 2011...

…I don’t see the comp with Matzek at all. Matzek’s command problems stemmed from the Rox toying with his delivery, but he is still young enough to figure it out. Castro has slipped significantly and while he still has some upside, he isn’t in the same league as Matzek given their respective ages.

The point being, just because they traded a once former top prospect whose star has faded badly for an OFer coming off an injury who can be flipped for prospects at the deadline doesn’t mean the Padres aren’t rebuilding.

by Traindogger on Jan 3, 2012 12:20 PM MST up reply actions

Castro was a 22 yo who made it to AAA

putting a 22YO in the PCL is a recipe for disaster IMO, if Matzek is graduating from Tulsa at 22 I will do a handstand. What I am saying is that they gave up a guy who has excellent stuff for an OF entering his final year of team control. Maybe it is a deadline thing but they certainly aren’t in full rebuild mode.

This is what I believe, too

It’s not so much that the NL West is bad, it’s just that it’s generally and decidedly average to slightly above average. I think its also in a sort of unique/weird place where it’s also decidedly non-sexy, which taints its league-wide perception. Consider:

It’s glamour franchise (Dodgers) is way down for a whole host of reasons.

While it recently produced a World Champion, other than the 15 minutes of fame generated by The Beard, that run to the title was relatively unwatched/boring/forgetable for non-die-hards.

Two of its teams (Giants and Padres) play in two of the worst offense-killing parks in the league, and produce the kind of low-scoring brand of baseball also generally found to be boring by non-die-hards. Dodger Stadium isn’t exactly a bandbox, either.

Two of its teams (Rockies and D-bags) are relative new-comers without much history/brand-appeal.

Combine all that with the ever-present East Coast Bias™, and you have a potent recipe for NL West bashing, or even worse, NL West ignoring.

But, yeah, the reality is: it’s not that the NL West is so bad/irrelevent, it’s just that we’re all generally decent/good-but-not-great. Sexy, huh?

Just a small town kid who thinks Coors Field on a sunny summer Saturday night is the best place to be on this or any other plane of existence. When a late-inning Todd Helton go-ahead homerun is added to this scenario, my brain melts.

Yep.

I talked to Mary for a little bit back before I left. She wanted me to officially submit an application, which I did. She’s out of town now until Friday, but apparently they have copyediting and writing tests that they’re having applicants do, and she’s going to e-mail those to me next week. After that she’s doing first interviews in a week or two, which we can do over the phone.

She told me a bit more about the job and I gave her a brief overview of what my job was. It seems to me like it would be a good fit, but we’ll see how it goes.

Oh, and I did have to tell her that we knew each other from being big Rockies fans, heh. But I didn’t mention anything about a blog.

Definitely try to play up your experience and publishing knowledge. If they get the usual candidates that I get, they are going to get people who have raw editorial skills but a real lack of knowledge of the industry or professional application of those skills. They’ll be coming from marketing or journalism backgrounds. That will be your advantage.

I just figured it was one of those majors with fewer professional openings (critics, or working in Hollywood) than degrees earned.

Which is kind of true, considering how often I find my opinions at odds with the popular ones.

That said, this year, I intend be launching my film blog and video essay series.

So this is a guess based on a while ago. But it seems like there was so many people that if someone wrote a passionate fanpost, either saying “John Fox is awesome” or “John Fox is stupid” that fanpost would get a ton of recs. Then it would be on the front page. Not sure if they just auto front paged or what, but there seemed to be a lot of content on their front page that wasn’t written by the staff. So it was hard to get a feel.

It’s 10 posters posting “woot” “YES!!!!!!” or “damn” all at the same time with no further commentary. Typing something descriptive like “double” takes too damn long…

I saw Moneyball during my trip.

I thought some of the acting was good, but the script was a mess. I’m not quite sure why it is on so many Top 10 lists except that most film “critics” have no idea what a good film should be like.

Well. I saw very few movies this year.

It could be because all of the rest of the movies sucked. The cinematography was also well done. But the general plot was filled with holes, useless characters, and unresolved story lines.

Pretty much bingo, though I can still say I loved the movie. It managed top ten out of the 110 I’ve seen from 2011 so far.

Yeah, you didn't miss much, though I didn't really love the Tree of Life.

There are a lot of Malick fans on this blog, so we’ve had this discussion before probably, but the only Malick film I’ve ever truly loved was Days of Heaven. That’s not intended to knock him, he’s a wonderful filmmaker. He just doesn’t connect with me quite so significantly most of the time.

I probably overrate him

because he’s a contemporary American director that gets away with making the kinds of films that he makes. Tarkovsky did what he does better than he does really, but he did it without Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

I’m also a religious guy. Malick has more resonance if you know where he is coming from theologically and agree with some of his worldview.

by DumbAndNerdy on Jan 3, 2012 5:12 PM MST up reply actions

What exactly is his world view?

I saw Tree of Life a week ago, and I’m still not sure what to make of it. It was beautiful, and I liked some aspects of it, but I don’t think I understood all of what he was trying to convey.

by RoxnSox09 on Jan 3, 2012 5:26 PM MST up reply actions

Well. My interpretation of ToL would take some time.

But the main line of thought that runs through almost all of Malick’s films is the battle between the wickedness of man and the grace of God. In one way or another, this theme appears in all of his films. In essence, all of this films become an examination of sin in one form or another. Tree of Life is no different, although it looks at sin in the context of the entire history of salvation and creation.

just watched it myself

pretty “meh” overall, I’d probably give it a “B” or so. I didn’t have high expectations, and it pretty much met them. Just never really had any momentum to get me involved. Not the worst, and Pitt was good and all that, but I agree that its surprising that its doing so well critically, I assume the cast/writers/directors getting a lot of love for being who they are.

by Teekalong on Jan 3, 2012 6:08 PM MST up reply actions

Well, I argue that just about everyone involved is "being who they are" at their very best.

JFK's Quote of the Day:

“Aw, everybody knows that game, the day I hit the homer off ole Charlie Root there in Wrigley Field, the day October first, the third game of that thirty-two World Series. But right now I want to settle all arguments. I didn’t exactly point to any spot, like the flagpole. Anyway, I didn’t mean to, I just sorta waved at the whole fence, but that was foolish enough. All I wanted to do was give that thing a ride… outta the park… anywhere.” Source: My Greatest Day in Baseball (John P. Carmichael) ~George Herman Ruth
