Tuesday Off Topic

Which films that are nominated for Best Picture have you seen and would recommend?

The Artist

The Descendents

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

The Help

Hugo

Midnight in Paris

Moneyball

Tree of Life

War Horse

Personally, I've only seen Tree of Life, though Moneyball and Midnight in Paris are in the queue. Tree of Life is heiled as a transcendental piece of work, or as a pretentious piece of dog crap, depending on who you ask. Definitely can understand where both sides come from. It isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Alternate topic:

Unique sleeping habits.

I tend to sleep like a rock, still all night. If this bed were inverted, I could sleep on it just fine.

Only saw Moneyball. Would recommend it. Looking forward to watching it again.

Haven’t seen any of the others. Have no desire to. I really don’t watch a lot of movies, I have to confess. In fact, I’m trying to remember all the movies I saw in a theater in 2011, and I think the list goes:

Moneyball
Horrible Bosses
Mission Impossible 4
J Edgar

And that’s in order of how much I enjoyed them. J. Edgar was a piece of crap.

Although I enjoyed Moneyball

it’s just not Oscar worthy.
Of the four I’ve seen (The Descendants, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris and The Help), I’d give The Help the nod. Still plan to see War Horse and Hugo before the Oscars and probably EL&IC after.

I agree

I really enjoyed Moneyball as a fan of baseball and a fan of the book, but honestly it got nominated on the pedigree of Miller, Zaillian and Sorkin (it seems everything Sorkin touches turns to gold… except Studio 60 bahaha). Which is interesting because, save for one scene, it was very un-Sorkin.

I've see War Horse

That’s it. So I can’t compare it to anything else. I enjoyed it. It was interesting. I’m dismayed that “Drive” was left off. No seriously.

I have see the previews and some snippets of “EL/IC” and for the first time in my life I do not want to see a Tom Hanks movie. Why? Because from what I saw I find the child actor “Extremely Annoying and Incredibly Grating”. No offense as I’m sure he’s a fine young man.

I liked the book

there’s kind of a backlash against Jonathan Safran Foer but I thought it was good. The thing is, in the book the kid is borderline autistic, and so much of what happens is inside his head. Can’t do that for a movie so they made him more precociuos. I have no desire to see it.

I just caught up on Mad Men

I LOVED the middle of Season 4, but it felt like it kinda lost focus for the final couple of episodes. I think Breaking Bad is better, but because of the premise – its much easier to make the concept of BB exciting and enthralling. Mad Men is better executed, but less accessible.

I find their premises equally interesting, but find Breaking Bad to be the better executed show.

by Greg Stanwood on Jan 31, 2012 1:06 PM MST up reply actions

I think

There are times when Mad Men is too… soap opera-y I guess. The actual theme of the winds of change slowly wearing on each of the individual characters (as well as the universe of the show in general) is fascinating, and I suppose when the show’s focus more on that and less on the individual interactions between the characters, it’s better than BB.

I think Breaking Bad is certainly more consistent, but there are individual episodes of Mad Men that are better (from an artistic standpoint, not a tension/excitement standpoint) than their BB counterparts. IDK if I’m making any sense – it makes sense in my head.

by The Toddfather's Goatee on Jan 31, 2012 1:11 PM MST up reply actions

That's because Mad Men is a soap opera.

But it's so much more than that!

Obviously there are referential aspects to it, but it’s got this fantastic flair of Greek Tragedy – you can flip open your textbook and note the small things that are going on in the show… you KNOW what events are going to be rocking the universe of the characters, the fun of the show is how they’ll be impacted.

by The Toddfather's Goatee on Jan 31, 2012 1:16 PM MST up reply actions

by Greg Stanwood on Jan 31, 2012 1:15 PM MST up reply actions

Yes

But I think the day-to-day interactions in Breaking Bad are (probably by design) more pivotal to the big scheme of things – in BB every action is subject to consequences, whereas in Mad Men, the consequences seem much less tied to any individual action. The storm in BB is created by Walter, Jessie and friends, whereas the storm in MM is imposed on Don, Joan and crew by the outside world – there’s just a disconnect there. The more i think about it, it’s less a matter of one is better than the other, they’re just fundamentally different.

The hills and rivers make it that way.

My parents grew up there. They said in the 50s and 60s it was terrible because of the pollution. This is the impression that most people have. But with all of the mills closing in the 70s, the city has cleaned up wonderfully.

If you can plan a trip around July 4 or the Regatta, go up to Mt. Washington to watch the fireworks. There’s nothing like that anywhere. They shoot them up from the river, so, if you’re up on Mt. Washington, they’re at eye level.

Deanna lives in the Mt. Washington

neighborhood, I could see how that would be awesome for the 4th.

Also the architecture was fascinating mix of new and old, did not expect that much of the Gothic style.

That was a pretty sketchy area when I lived there.

I used to have to rollerblade through it when I went from my house to my girlfriend’s place. That was before they built the new stadiums. The last time I visited, about five years ago, that whole area was gentrified. Pretty crazy.

Not too much.

There was a deli about a half block furhter down the street that had great gazpacho in the summer. I used to eat there a ton. There was a pizza place about three blocks further down and I used to go there as well.

What’s funny is that the editorial offices in which I used to work are now a jewelry store. The kind with a WE BUY GOLD sign.

OT: Biondino, to answer your question from yesterday’s OT thread, if you go to the Archives link at the top of the page, I think you’ll find what you are looking for. That’s pretty much the easiest way to see what recent topics have unread posts without scrolling all down the front page, and it includes things like OT threads that are hidden.

Also, I did not make it to the next round of interviews for the job. Oh well. I guess that would have been too easy.

Besides that, it’s slim pickin’s. You may want to look at development houses and production houses. They tend to be hiring more frequently and love to get people from the publishers when they can. They’re also in better locations.
