Oh, er, I don't know what to say

Not very good at being put on the spot!

I am listening to the awesome Et In Terra Pax from Bach’s Mass in B Minor as I type this. Classical music has a slightly disconcerting propensity to make me cry. And I spent half an hour earlier trawling Youtube for Sylvie McNair performances after being moved to something-in-my-eye by her performance on Mozart’s Mass in C Minor.

Niche interest? Sorry about that :)

Mostly because my parents were very musical while young, but did nothing as adults. My mom played this song, every once in a while though, and I got intrigued into music and the piano in large part because of it.

There are correct opinions, and then there are opinions like this. Petruschka? Les Noces? The Firebird?

You must not be a fan of the ballet, he was riveting in his works for that, although seriously, they are meant to be seen with dancers, so just listening to them without the stage context won’t give you a complete picture. The Rake’s Progress is a pretty fantastic opera, too.

Prokofiev is my favorite composer.

Mozart has brilliant moments, but he also has a lot of crap. This is what happens when you have 600 or so compositions. I find too may of his pieces formulaic, and played mechanically without a lot of emotion.

His operas are almost universally brilliant.

Many of his chamber works are also outstanding, especially those for winds. I’d agree that his first 38 symphonies are a bit repetitive, formulaic and dull for the most part, but his last three and what he did on the Requiem mass are awesome.

by Rox Girl on Feb 2, 2012 10:25 AM MST up reply actions

that was talking about Mozart, btw, not Prokofiev.

I like Prokofiev a lot, too. Not my fave, but probably in my top ten.

by Rox Girl on Feb 2, 2012 10:33 AM MST up reply actions

Prokofiev isn't really hailed by critics,

but he’s played all the time now. In 100 years he’ll probably be even more highly regarded.

My top five are probably: Prokofiev, Webern, Bach, Bartok, Debussy.

I like contemporary composers as well though.

Alright, you've explained why you don't like Mozart, so what's your beef with Stravinsky?

And maybe I should ask about Ravel, too, as the composers you’ve listed would seem to indicate that you’d have a high opinion of both, and Stravinsky’s so monumental with regard to the shape of 20th century composition that I think it would be hard to exclude him from a top five list like this.

by Rox Girl on Feb 2, 2012 10:58 AM MST up reply actions

I like Stravinsky. I find Ravel a bit boring.

I am a jazz guy. I listened to nothing but jazz and my parents’ oldies when I was a child. I didn’t listen to rock or popular music until I was an adolescent. This wasn’t out of sheltering, but out of odd musical taste for a precocious kid.

I still relate all music to jazz. Jazz has two key components that I look for in all music—unexpectedness and emotional impact. You can feel the soul of a good jazz musician through their interpretation of a song. You are also surprised and delighted by a unique turn from the improvisation on a typical theme by a great musician. As the world comes closer together, and all types of music proliferate to a point that it is difficult to truly create something new, these two factors are even more important in my musical tastes.

Applying these standards to classical music, to me, the five composers listed, with the possible exception of Bach, each have a high degree of unexpectedness and emotional impact in their compositions. I like Bach because he tends to be played in a manner that allows musicians to do unexpected things and inject a lot of emotional impact into their performances.

Ravel lacks that surprise for me. He plays too much within set forms. Debussy did this, but then when strikingly jump out of a form within a composition.

Stravinsky is good. He just doesn’t stay with me like the five listed above. Shostakovich is like that with me too. I like him, but he doesn’t stay with me as much.

Remember, I’m an amateur here. These are all my impressions. My analyses may be completely wrong academically.

His operas with Da Ponte are universally brilliant.

It’s hit or miss for me outside of those four or five. It’s really personal taste though. As I mentioned too, half of it is that his works are often played so poorly. I think musicians like them because of their technical aspects, but they focus on that and completely suck any feeling out of the music.

Purple Row MLB: An OOTP league for Rowbots

Leading the Astros into the Future. Go, Go Astros!

by DumbAndNerdy on Feb 2, 2012 10:35 AM MST up reply actions

I'll agree with this,

I also think that there’s an issue that Mozart’s art (as with many, if not most long dead composers) is mostly no longer relevant to contemporary audiences outside its purely aesthetic qualities, and outside the operas, where contemporary touches can be added through staging and direction, musicians can’t seem to revitalize this in the same way that say many of Shakespeare’s plays have been, so the music often tends to have a stuffy museum quality to it. It’s sort of akin to the paintings of a William Turner or Thomas Gainsborough’s in that respect, where the technical mastery is evident, but the artistic relevance will be lost on contemporary non-academic lay audiences.

Agreed

This is their second album, and I think it’s going to be a lot of them trying to find their sound instead of just replicating the vibe of their first album (which is awesome). They tend to err on the side of “throw as many instruments and sounds into the picture”, which is frustrating because their simpler songs are usually their better ones.

our mission statement

The very act of HAVING a mission statement violates that mission statement.

"Surgeons have determined that doing the wave will, yes, will cause tears to the suprapinatus muscle and the infraspinatus muscle from the throwing of an individual's arms rapidly into the air. In addition, any children doing the wave will be sold to the circus. Do NOT do the wave in the ballpark. Doing the wave is safe at pro football games and Miley Cyrus concerts.
