Tuesday Pebble Report: Alex White Pitches For The Springs; Trevor Story Homers For Asheville

Tacoma 4, Colorado Springs 2
The Sky Sox had troubles with the Rainiers' three pitchers last night, picking up just four hits. Second baseman Brandon Wood accounted for most of the offense with a 2-for-3, two-run, one solo home run night. Third baseman D.J. LeMahieu drove in Wood for the second run, but he picked up his fourth error of the season.

Alex White made it through 3.1 innings, allowing two runs in three hits and two walks. He struck out two while throwing 36 of 59 pitches for strikes. His counterpart, lefty Anthony Vazquez, allowed just one run on the Wood homer and struck out five.

Corpus Christi 7, Tulsa 4
Joe Gardner had been pitching well through the first five innings, allowing just one run and striking out five. But then Josh Rutledge committed a fielding error to start the sixth inning, which eventually resulted in a Chris Wallace RBI double and a T.J. Steele two-run homer. Gardner left after 5.2 innings, putting men on first and second by way of singles. His final like as four runs allowed (three earned) on nine hits.

Kent Matthes accounted for the only extra-base hit for the Drillers with a double and a home run. Nolan Arenado went 2-for-5 with a RBI and a strikeout.

Visalia 9, Modesto 3
Modesto's Juan Gonzalez encountered a hiccup in the fourth inning that was too much for the Nuts to come back from on Monday night. Visalia entered the inning with a 1-0 lead following a RBI triple in the second inning. But nothing as exciting as that happened in the fourth inning. Errors by Timothy Smalling and Corey Dickerson as well as a wild pitch and a few singles drove in four runs for the 5-0 lead. Center fielder Chandler Laurent, though, did have an assist at home plate to end the inning and prevent the two-run single from turning into a three-runner.

Gonzalez finished with just two of five runs earned while allowing nine hits and striking out seven over five innings. Nick Schnaitmann allowed one hit and struck out one in two innings of relief. But that only temporarily salved things. Chad Rose pitched the eighth inning and allowed all four runs, but they are all unearned. After two fly outs to start the inning, Rose appeared to have the third out on a strike -- wild pitch! A single and a throwing error by Brett Tanos (he had a fielding error earlier in the game) put the first unearned run on the board. Back-to-back doubles followed for the other three runs.

Tanos, though, did have a good night at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a double, an RBI and three walks. Dickerson singled twice while Jared Clark doubled in two runs in the sixth inning.

Asheville 13, West Virginia 5
The West Virginia Power had few answers for the Asheville Tourists' bats on Monday evening. Asheville pounded out 13 runs on 14 hits (one more hit than the Power had). Harold Riggins led the team with three hits (two doubles) and two RBI while Samuel Mende and Trevor Story each hit a home run in the game (the latter a two-run shot in the seventh).

Ben Alsup was roughed up for five runs on 12 hits in six innings, allowing one home run in the process. Russell Brewer struck out three over two innings.
