Pedro Alvarez has been a horrible hitter this season, so much that he is not playing tonight. He sure did perfect the ability to throw a ball through his neck though.
The first time Jamie Moyer faced the Pirates was one day before the day I was born. The lineup he faced: U.L. Washington, Bobby Bonilla, Johnny Ray, Jim Morrison, Mike Diaz, Tony Pena, Barry Bonds and R.J. Reynolds. He was chased in the second inning after allowing seven runs. He was 23.
The last time Jamie Moyer faced the Pirates, he struck out eight and allowed one run in six innings. It's almost as if Moyer has gotten better while the Pirates have gotten worse in the last 26 years. Or something.
The last time Jamie Moyer faced anyone, he set the MLB record for being the oldest pitcher to win an MLB game. He has a decent chance to do just that again tonight, as he faces a lineup that has not scored more than 5 runs in a game all year and average just two runs per game, while Jim Tracy is trotting out the A-lineup.
