I decided to write a new article for Purple Row at this moment because this at-the-moment, pathetic Rockies team is being killed again (we've lost the perfect game, no hitter, and shutout since I've been writing). Hopefully, that won't overshadow this article. After a grotesque outing by Jeremy Guthrie last night (3.1 IP, 7 ER, 11 hits) and tonight's expected struggle by Josh Outman (3 IP, 5 ER, 7 hits), I expect the Rockies' rotation to have a huge overhaul for two reasons: the Rockies' sudden offensive shortage and the signing of former ace Jeff Francis.
First, the offensive shortage. The Rockies are on pace for a grand total of 4 runs in 3 games at the moment (all in one game). For a magical week or so, the offense was lights out, and 10 runs was no problem. Dexter Fowler was hitting homers like Adam Dunn, and Carlos Gonzalez was a prophet from the good lord himself. But, that's not the case this week, or likely many weeks down the road. The Rockies are going to need some quality starts like Alex White's on Sunday, or Friedrich's 4 hitter on Monday if they want to contend even for a wild card. And I'm sure Jim Tracy and (my personal favorite candidate for new manager if Tracy gets fired) Glenallen Hill know that. But Glenallen will get his own article if we lose too many more games.
Anyway, the Jeff Francis signing definitely shakes things up too. I don't expect Guthrie to hang around too much longer, especially since he even thought he was done. Josh Outman, let me tell you as an Oakland A's secondary fan, is a damn good reliever. He will stick, in the bullpen, especially since with Brothers being groomed for a setup role, we need a lefty. He can pitch, but not for contact. He needs to come in for one inning and pitch lights out. So those two shouldn't been in the rotation for long.
Where does Francis come into play? He'll probably slide in [maybe even Saturday?] behind Alex White or Friedrich. It's funny, I have tickets for Saturday, so it'd be something to go see Francis's homecoming. That still leaves two spots open. Moscoso is present, but his talent isn't here. Chacin's DL date is not public, so honestly no one knows when he'll return. Many feel Pomeranz is just struggling too much to put in the rotation. So, does Guthrie stick? Does Roenicke get his shot? Do we see if Tyler Chatwood is worth anything? I don't have the answers, or I'd be the GM of the Rockies. But all I do know, is that we will see change.
Poll
Do Guthrie or Outman stick in the rotation?
Guthrie will. He's a veteran and can turn things around. Maybe. (8 votes)
Outman will. The 50% strikeout ratio vs. LAD cannot be ignored. (5 votes)
Both will. Francis will just become the 5th starter. (5 votes)
Neither will. The rotation will build new around White and Friedrich. (19 votes)
