Why yes, those are scissors in my pocket.
File this under words I didn't think I'd be typing tonight: it was a high-scoring affair at Petco Park tonight, as San Diego and Colorado combined for 14 runs on 23 hits -- 8 of them for extra bases, 4 of them homers. The Rockies got the worst of it, falling 9-5 to the Padres. The umpires were obviously having trouble dealing with it too, as they missed several calls during the game.
On the bright side for the Rockies, Carlos Gonzalez hit a grand slam to give the team a short-lived 4-3 lead in the 3rd, while Josh Rutledge finished with 2 doubles and a triple, while also stealing a base. The rookie continued his impressive big league debut, raising his line to .375/.407/.708 in his 7 games as a Rockie. Marco Scutaro also added a two hit night for Colorado.
Unfortunately, you aren't going to win many games when your starter gives up 7 runs on 9 hits in just 3 innings, as Drew Pomeranz did tonight. The poor outing raised Pomeranz's ERA on the year to a more Rockies-like 4.98. Josh Roenicke cleaned up the mess, albeit a little late, with 3.1 IP of 2 hit, 5 strikeout ball. Adding to the poor news, catcher Wilin Rosario left the game with a low grade ankle sprain early on -- he should be day to day.
With the loss, the Rockies drop to 3.5 back of the Padres and 22 games under .500.
