The Avalanche get their first road win of the season, beating Calgary 6 to 3!
The Avalanche came into this road game undefeated at home and winless on the road. This game was to be the second of a back-to-back with a tough loss the previous night and was the fourth road game in a row for the road weary Avalanche. However, they were able to pull out a win with some determined play and a start stepping up at the right time.
This game looked to be over early on as the Flames seemed to play with more energy then the Avs. This manifested with Calgary getting the first goal at 7:23 into the game off of a rebound from a shot deflection made by goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. However, the Avs tied it up at the end of the first period, getting an unassisted goal from John Mitchell with less than 40 seconds left.
The second period started with a goal for both sides in the first four minutes before it settled down into an uneasy back and forth game. Mitchell again scored for the Avs with just over three minutes left in the 2nd period to provide a nice lead but this time it was the Flames that scored in the final minute to make it a 3-3 tie.
With six minutes to go in the final period and the score still tied, it looked bad for Colorado when Ryan Wilson got sent to the sin bin for Interference but the Avs were able to first, kill of the penalty, and then second, score on their own power play when Paul Statsny got them the lead with a little under three minutes to play. Statsny followed this up with another goal just over a minute later and then P.A. Parenteau got his second goal of the game on an empty netter for the Avs to provide the final score of 6-3.
Thanks to those who came and chatted during the game and GO AVS!!! Their next game is at home this Saturday at 1 pm mountain time against the Edmonton Oilers. Remember, its not baseball, but its better than trying to watch someone play baseball in the snow.
