Arizona Fall League update: Tim Wheeler enjoys a 3-hit game, swipes 2 bases

Salt River Fields - Charlie Drysdale

Cristhian Adames drives in two and scores a run, while Tim Wheeler enjoys a three-hit game. Pitcher Tyler Matzek throws a scoreless inning.

Four prospects from the Colorado Rockies were in the starting lineup for the Salt River Rafters 3-5 loss to Peoria on Friday. Cristhian Adames, Kyle Parker and Tim Wheeler made up the heart of the Rafters order with catcher Dustin Garneau batting ninth and handling the catching duties.

Shortstop Cristhian Adames was responsible for all of the Rafters runs in one way or another, driving in two and scoring once himself. The switch-hitting Adames went 1-for-3, walking once and scoring on a Tim Wheeler RBI. First baseman Kyle Parker batted third and had just one hit in four attempts with a ground ball up the middle to Houston Astros prospect center fielder Delino DeShields.

Tim Wheeler had a solid game from the cleanup spot, collecting three hits and driving in a run. Wheeler displayed his speed with two infield singles and a pair of stolen bases before being caught in the act by Padres prospect catcher Austin Hedges.

Hedges put on a defensive display, throwing out four base runners, including one on a pickoff at first base and three others trying to steal. The San Diego prospect did well on the other side of the plate as well, contributing a double and a pair of RBI to Peoria's win.

Lefty Tyler Matzek worked a scoreless seventh in an unconventional three-up and three-down inning as he received help from catcher Dustin Garneau who threw out Delino DeShields trying to steal second base for the third out of the inning. Tyler struck out the first batter he faced before allowing a base hit to DeShields. A fly ball out to Seattle prospect Chris Taylor set up the caught stealing, one of two runners Garneau gunned down in the game. Meanwhile, Matzek has yet to allow a run in two relief appearances.

The Rafters are idle until Monday, then travel to Peoria to take on the Saguaros at 12:35 Arizona time. Peoria's ballclub is made up of prospects from the Brewers, Indians, Orioles, Rangers and Red Sox organizations.
