Tim Wheeler singled and scored the go-ahead run and Dan Houston pitched a scoreless fifth inning for the Salt River Rafters, who notched a 3-2 victory over the Surprise Saguaros in Arizona Fall League play on Monday.
Wheeler, who was penciled in the lineup as the designated hitter, reached base with one out in the sixth inning on a bloop single off of Texas Rangers minor league reliever Ryan Harvey. Two batters later, Wheeler crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Harvey to give the Rafters a one-run lead that would hold through the remainder of the game.
Wheeler is 5-for-16 at the plate with a pair of walks but still doesn't have an extra-base hit.
Kyle Parker also represented the Rockies for Salt River on Monday, batting cleanup and starting at first base. Parker had a rough day at the plate, going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
Parker is 2-for-16 with five strikeouts in four games.
Bowman Hitting Challenge
Former Rockies draft pick and current Yankees prospect Peter O'Brien won the inaugural Bowman Hitting Challenge, a home run derby-like event with a unique twist that includes a point system based on the quality and location of batted balls. O'Brien hit five home runs and racked up 1,575 points to lead all contestants.
