Friday Rockpile: Rockies charity suggestions

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

What kinds of charitable activities can Rockies players perform?

Carlos Gonzalez and his family are doing a toy drive for Colorado families in need. He'll be trading autographs for toys outside Coors Field on December 14. This is obviously a really cool thing for him to be doing, so hats off to Cargo.  Also, his family looks adorable.

But this got me thinking...what other charitable events should Rockies players be doing? This could be a valuable outreach activity to drum up support from fans and do some good in the community. So here are some suggestions for other charitable activities Rockies players could perform.

Tulowitzki Camaro rides to fight hunger

Bring 100 dollars worth of canned foods to Coors and Troy Tulowitzki will take you on a cruise around Lodo in his bitchin' Camaro.

Of course you'll have to sign a waiver, because if we know one thing about Tulo, it's that he always goes 110%. It's eminently possible that after the high-speed donuts in the parking lot and Tokyo drifts around street corners, your brains will leak out your ears from the G forces.

It'll all be worth it though to have a chance to shoot the breeze with the Rockies star short stop. It might be difficult to get a word in edgewise, what with Tulo detailing the car's specs ("this baby's a 1967 Chevy Camaro RS, fuel-injected, with a 12 cylinder, four-speed manual transmission. She'll get up to 150 in 8.3 seconds and handles like Ozzie Smith turning two"), but at least you'll learn about muscle cars.

Unrelated, but I found this site while researching Tulo's Camaro.

Mike Cuddyer magic tricks for tots

Cuddyer: Next in line.

Fan: Hi Michael, my daughter's a big fan.

Fan's Daughter: Hiya!

Cuddyer: She's adorable! Why don't you set your donation on the table over there. (to Fan's daughter) Would you like to see a magic trick?

Daughter: Yeah!

Cuddyer: Gee, your ears look dirty...wait...there was a quarter back there!

Fan's Daughter: ...it was in your sleeve.

Cuddyer: Haha, alright, a skeptic. How about a card trick. Pick a card, any card. Don't show me! Okay, now put it back in the deck, shuffle it if you want.  Okay.  Okay.  Now hold this hat.  Is that your card in there, the 3 of clubs?

Daughter: No, I had the 10 of spades.

Cuddyer: ...

Cuddyer: Okay, let me try again.

Daughter: Dad, can we go?

Rafael Betancourt guesses your weight

Usher: Next! Okay, if Rafael is within 10 pounds, we ask that you donate 15 bucks.  If he's within 20, we ask you donate 10.  If he's outside that range, you get an autographed baseball.  Alright, you're up, head on into the tent.

The Rockies are making a push for former Rockie great Latroy Hawkins, according to Troy Renck. The 40 year old Hawkins is coming off a fine season for the Mets. So add yet another name to the pile of relievers the Rockies are angling for. With all this smoke, I'd imagine someone gets added soon.

Here's a nice overview of off-season terminology and important dates.

A thought provoking article by Dave Cameron about why teams are so willing to give out multi-year, big money contracts, even when the last few years are virtually guaranteed to be painful.
