Game Wrap: Rockies Defeat Padres, 6-3

Rich Pilling

The Rockies won Wednesday afternoon against the Padres, 6-3, as the pitching staff kept the ball in the strike zone and on the ground, issuing just 3 walks and inducing 3 double plays.

Walt Weiss must have been proud of the effort put forth by the Rockies pitching staff today in a 6-3 victory over the Padres.

They pitched to contact and kept the ball on the ground surrendering just three walks and getting 12 ground ball outs.

Tyler Chatwood picked up the win and pitched 3 innings of two run ball surrendering 2 runs on 5 hits. While the hit total is higher than Weiss would like to see, Chatwood only walking one batter is a good sign. Drew Pomeranz followed with two innings of work, giving up 1 unearned run thanks to his own throwing error that allowed Will Venable to reach on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

Josh Outman, Miguel Batista, Rafael Betancourt, and Josh Sullivan all pitched scoreless innings of relief with Batista issuing the only walk between them.

On the offensive side of things, Rosario led the charge, going 3-3 with a double. Chris Nelson, who is likely to start opening day at third base, singled and drove in 2 runs. His competition for the position, Jordan Pacheco, also collected 2 RBI in the win.

The two insurance runs in the 9th scored when DH Kyle Parker reached on a fielding error by third baseman Gregorio Petit that allowed Rafael Ortega and Ben Paulsen to score.

The Rockies improved to 3-2 for the spring. Tomorrow they host the Cincinnati Reds at 1:10 MST. It's a matchup of hard throwing youngsters in Aroldis Chapman and Juan Nicasio.
