Game Wrap: Rockies defeat Reds, 4-3

Doug Pensinger

The Colorado Rockies received solid efforts from Juan Nicasio and Jeff Francis on the mound. A Nolan Arenado-initiated triple play was the defensive play of the game.

Juan Nicasio retired all 6 batters he faced, Nolan Arenado had an RBI double, and Jordan Pacheco notched two hits in today's 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

In addition to Nicasio, Jeff Francis logged 3 scoreless innings. Matt Belisle surrendered a run on two hits in his one frame, while a shaky Logan Kensing allowed two runs in an inning. The offense picked up three runs in the bottom half of the inning, though, gift-wrapping the win for Kensing. Ahh, Wins, what a fun stat.

The difference in the game was defense; the Reds booted the ball four times, while the Rockies played error-less. That's certainly encouraging to see, as the Rockies were an all-around train-wreck in the field last year. The defensive highlight of the day was a 5-4-3 triple play in the fifth inning, with Arenado stepping on third for the first out and firing off the ball to Eric Young Jr. at second for the next out and Henry Wrigley receiving the throw at first to complete the play.

Jeff Francis said of the triple play (via Owen Perkins at the Rockies' official site):

"I knew it was a triple play as soon as he caught it," Francis said. "Just because it was a one-hopper to his right. I know Cozart runs pretty well, but I just said, 'No way, this is happening.' I called it. I said to myself, 'Well, this will be nice.'"

The Rockies are now 4-2 in Cactus League play, meaning they will likely continue that pace into the season and finish 2013 with 108 wins and 54 losses. I recommend saving up for those World Series tickets now.
