Rockies 9, Mets 8 (10 innings): Rockies sweep doubleheader from Mets

Jordan Pacheco celebrates his walk-off single in the Rockies' 9-8 win over the Mets. - Doug Pensinger

Despite a six-run deficit in the middle of the fifth, the Rockies rally to beat the Mets in extra innings.

Well, that was one for the record books. Despite being down 8-2 midway through the game, the Colorado Rockies, wearing throwback road uniforms from their first game in 1993, won one of the coldest games in franchise history (36 degrees at game time) on a walk-off single in the 10th inning from Jordan Pacheco.

The Rockies were four outs from defeat, down 8-6 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, when Josh Rutledge reached on an error by Mets reliever Brandon Lyon. Lyon was then pulled for lefty Scott Rice, who saw Carlos Gonzalez beat the shift with a single to left on his only pitch of the game.

With two on and two out, Mets manager Terry Collins called on closer Bobby Parnell for a four-out save. Parnell then allowed Gonzalez to steal second before getting a ground ball from Michael Cuddyer, which Ruben Tejada threw away, allowing Gonzalez and Rutledge to score and tie the game, 8-8.

The Rockies then got scoreless innings from Rex Brothers and Rafael Betancourt, in his second appearance of the day, before Mets reliever Greg Burke walked Gonzalez and gave up singles to Cuddyer and Pacheco that gave the Rockies the 9-8 win and sole possession of first place in the NL West.

The Rockies actually had an early lead, scoring the first run of the game on Carlos Gonzalez's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.

However, the Mets tied the game in the second on Tejada's RBI single and took a 3-1 lead in the third thanks to a Yorvit Torrealba pickoff throw that skipped into left field and a sac fly from Marlon Byrd.

The Mets had a 3-2 lead entering the fifth when the wheels came off for Rockies starter Jeff Francis. He allowed three hits, walked a man and threw two wild pitches while only recording one out before leaving the game with two men on and the Rockies trailing, 7-2. Adam Ottavino came in and walked Anthony Recker and gave up an RBI infield single to Jordany Valdespin before shutting down the inning with the Rockies down 8-2.

The comeback began for the Rockies in the bottom of the fifth. Collins went to lefty Josh Edgin in relief of starter Aaron Laffey, but Edgin was only able to record one out before loading the bases and walking Pacheco to force in a run before being pulled in favor of LaTroy Hawkins, who had already appeared in the first game of the day. Hawkins retired Nelson on a sacrifice fly before Torrealba's two-run double cut the defecit to 8-6, it stayed that way until the eighth.

Looking at tomorrow's weather, a game seems extremely unlikely with 4-8 inches of snow in the forecast, but the scheduled starters are Jeremy Hefner for the Mets and the Jon Garland for the Rockies.
