Thursday Rockpile: Helton Rebounds, Escalona Dominates

Marc Piscotty

Last week in this space I wrote that Todd Helton may just be finished. This observation was based less on his numbers this year and more on his general comfort level in the box going back to midway through last season. Since I wrote that, Helton has gone 7-13 with 6 RsBI (couldn’t resist) and a home run that essentially won a game in San Diego. I’d be happy to be this wrong all season.

If my calling him done was premature and based on small sample size, then so would be proclaiming him back. But boy has it been fun watching ole' No. 17 produce and contribute to wins.

Edgmer Escalona has appearance in five games. In three of them he has pitched at least two innings. He's 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA with one walk and five strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings and has stranded all four runners he has inherited.

After his game-winning single, and even before, I have been reading that the Rockies simply must find a place for Jordan Pacheco. Certainly, his contact skill is enticing but where would he play? It is a similar problem that Eric Young Jr. is having (especially if Todd Helton hits) and I'm not sure there is one right answer for these guys, but it is never a bad thing to have this many assets on a roster. Knowing that Nolan Arenado waits in the wings, they could turn into great trade chips is they continue to produce, and they are nice insurance if Arenado can't find his way to, or in, the big leagues any time soon.

There is a fun piece in the Denver Post about Dexter Fowler and his wife, Aliya, and their little dog too.

Excellent piece on hardballtimes.com about the Josh Outman methodology of throwing a baseball.

The Mariners and Tigers combined for 40 strike outs!! Sure they had 14 innings to do it but still...
