Nolan Arenado hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and Troy Tulowitzki and Eric Young Jr. had three hits apiece as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 9-3, on Saturday night at Coors Field in Denver, Colo.
Arenado stepped to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Rockies leading by two runs after errors on consecutive two-out plays by Evan Longoria and Ben Zobrist. David Price, who hit the 100-pitch mark after walking Wilin Rosario in the previous at-bat, hung a curveball that Arenado blasted into the center field bleachers, giving Colorado a six-run cushion.
Troy Tulowitzki drove in the Rockies' first three runs with an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run double in the third, which tied the game after Tampa Bay took a 3-1 lead after Kelly Johnson's two-run single in the top half of the inning. Young, who singled to lead off the first and third, scored on both of Tulowitzki's RBI hits.
Rockies starter Jon Garland lasted five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out a pair of batters and walking one. Edgmer Escalona and Wilton Lopez played a huge part in the Rockies' win, combining for four innings of scoreless relief. Escalona was particularly effective in his two innings of work, striking out two and not allowing a hit.
Price allowed nine runs -- only four earned -- on 10 hits and three walks in 6.2 innings. He struck out five and allowed a pair of home runs.
Carlos Gonzalez went yard for the sixth time this year as part of a two-hit evening.
