Tyler Anderson, Charlie Culberson stand out on Monday

USA TODAY Sports

Tyler Anderson's terrific outing didn't result in a win for him, but Modesto pulled it out in extra innings anyway. Meanwhile, Charlie Culberson had a big day for the Sky Sox in a loss.

AAA Colorado Springs: L 7-5 (17-12, 2nd, 2.5 GB)

Charlie Culberson had two hits, including a home run, to pace the Sky Sox offense, which struck out 11 times against Fresno's Chris Heston and Sandy Rosario. Corey Dickerson was the biggest strikeout culprit, fanning three times in a 1-for-4 effort. Matt McBride had one hit, but it was a two-run triple in the eighth inning that cut a four-run deficit in half.

Justin Berg scuffled through five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks. He failed to strike out a single batter. Rob Scahill struck out a pair in three scoreless innings of relief.

A+ Modesto: W 4-3 (13-18, 4th, 7 GB)

William Rankin and Scott Oberg were unable to hold on to the lead in the eighth inning, spoiling Tyler Anderson's magnificent start. Anderson lasted six innings and did not allow a run, giving up two hits while striking out six. Modesto found itself trailing heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Tyler Massey's two-out RBI single sent the game into extra innings, paving the way for Will Swanner's walk-off double in the 10th.

Massey led the way with three hits, while Swanner and Taylor Featherston finished with two apiece. Trevor Story doubled, drove in a run and struck out just once in five at-bats.

A Asheville: W 6-2, L 4-1 (17-13, 4th, 1.5 GB)

Tom Murphy had a pair of hits in Game 1 of the Tourists' doubleheader against Augusta, raising his batting average to .426. Kyle Van Tungeln and Jose Rivera, who homered and drove in two, also had two hits apiece for Asheville. Jonathan Vargas gave up two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings to earn the victory. Patrick Johnson struck out a pair in a perfect inning of relief.

The Tourists managed just four hits in the nightcap, one of which was a first-inning RBI double off the bat of David Dahl, who went 1-for-8 on the day to drop his batting average to .237. Shane Broyles took the loss by allowing three earned runs on four hits and five walks. Joshua Slaats struck out a batter in a scoreless inning of work after taking over for Broyles.
