Phillies 8, Rockies 7: Pitching woes kill big lead

At least this happened. - Doug Pensinger

After building a 7-2 lead through 5 innings, Nicasio and the bullpen just couldn't hold on and finish what the offense started.

With a lineup that was missing Dexter Fowler and Troy Tulowitzki, two of the team's best four hitters, it seems too good to be true to see the Rockies able to build a 7-2 lead against a very good pitcher in Kyle Kendrick. And with such a lineup, a loss should be expected to be due to offensive woes right?

Not Friday night. Nicasio continued a disturbing trend of not lasting deep into games, and not pitching well after the first four or so innings. It is nights like this that make me more certain that Nicasio's role should be out of the bullpen.

Now for the good things: Carlos Gonzalez hit his 19th home run of the year, and collected four hits despite the fact that he was hit in the foot by an errant ball last night. In his first game back, Josh Rutledge hit a home run. The Rockies made Kendrick look very hittable- in fact, every starting player except Jonathan Herrera and including Juan Nicasio, got at least one hit. Matt Belisle and Rob Scahill both looked great.
