Tyler Chatwood will make his first start in 12 days against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday at Coors Field in Denver, Colo.
Chatwood left his start against the Cincinnati Reds on June 3 after four innings with an injury to his right triceps, putting a damper on what was a solid outing. At the time, Chatwood described the pain as "startling."
The setback gave Chatwood his second unwanted break from the Rockies' rotation this season. After a pair of decent starts in April by the 23-year-old righty which resulted in Rockies wins, Chatwood was demoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs before returning to the Rockies when Jeff Francis was injured in mid-May.
Chatwood has turned a corner in his third big-league season, posting a 2.14 ERA/214 ERA+ in 33.2 innings. He has struck out 30 batters and walked only 10, a big turnaround from his past two seasons, in which he walked almost as many hitters as he punched out.
While the Rockies have one of their better pitchers returning today, one of their best offensive players is still out of the lineup. Dexter Fowler will sit for the second straight game after being hit in the right hand by a pitch while attempting to bunt in a loss to the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
Fowler pinch-ran last night and stole a base in the eighth inning of the Rockies' soul-crushing loss to the Phillies in the series opener.
The win for the Phillies was their 30th in their last 37 regular-season and playoff games against the Rockies.
