Maybe all the Colorado Rockies needed to get out of the tremendous hole they dug themselves into was some Dickerson -- and their batting practice jerseys, of course.
Corey Dickerson doubled twice and drove in a run and DJ LeMahieu homered as part of his three-hit day to pace the Rockies offense, which gave starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin -- who made the decision for the team to wear their batting practice/spring training jerseys during the game -- plenty to work with in a 7-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Chacin was brilliant for the second straight start, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing just five hits and a walk. He struck out three. Wilton Lopez allowed a solo home run to Ryan Zimmerman in the bottom of the ninth inning to break up the shutout, but that didn't stop the Rockies from being all smiles after the game.
Dickerson, along with fellow rookie Nolan Arenado, who made a few more nice plays in the field and hit his sixth home run of the season, were giddy in their postgame interview with Jenny Cavnar, just like kids would be while heading for the team treats bag after a Little League game.
Rockies young and old got the job done on Saturday, as everyone in the starting lineup, including Chacin, had at least one hit. Michael Cuddyer is in that group; his first-inning RBI single gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead and extended his hitting streak to 20 games.
Cuddyer came around to score the final run of the Rockies' three-run first inning against Nationals starter Dan Haren on Dickerson's line-drive hit that he stretched into a double in his first big-league at-bat. Dickerson doubled again in the fourth inning and scored on a wild pitch before striking out and flying out to end his big day.
Haren, who left to a chorus of boos (and some mock cheers) in the fourth inning now has an ERA of 6.15, worst among qualified National League starters. He has given up 11 runs in two starts against the Rockies this season.
With the win, the Rockies ended their five-game losing streak and one-day stint with a losing record. They'll look to get back above .500 tomorrow in the series finale in D.C. Jorge De La Rosa will be on the mound for Colorado, opposite Ross Detwiler.
