Game Wrap: Chacin excellent, Cuddyer still streaking as Rox beat Giants 4-1

Garrett Ellwood

Jhoulys Chacin was again excellent for the Colorado Rockies as his 8 innings of 3 hit no run baseball would be the deciding factor in a 4-1 win over the San Francisco Giants. Michael Cuddyer kept his hit streak going and provided the difference offensively with a two-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd.

The Colorado Rockies started the first inning off of Barry Zito with a single and a stolen base from DJ LeMahieu who would score on a Carlos Gonzalez double. I would love to be able to write "and as it turned out that is all the Rockies would need."

But Buster Posey is a jerk. A big fat jerk. I mean, I'm sure he is a nice kid. But I'm pretty sure, based on evidence found in prior sentences in this piece and also by his shutout-killing 9th inning home run, that he is, assuredly, a jerk.

Michael Cuddyer would add some (apparently much needed) insurance runs and keep his franchise-record hitting streak alive with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the third. Wilin Rosario followed up with a home run of his own putting the Rockies up 4-0 in a game in which starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin brought his good stuff. Again.

Chacin has been on a roll for the Rockies and this makes three in a row. First came the almost complete game shutout against the Phillies that ended with him posting a line of 8.2 IP with 2 (soft) earned runs. The start after that he would go 7 innings and give up no runs and he rounded it out nicely tonight with an 8 inning 3 hit zero run performance.

Some nice defense from DJ LeMahieu during one of the Giants' few scoring chances against Chacin ended the threat in the 4th. Jhoulys would work out of trouble again only once in the 7th inning, but otherwise cruised.

Alas, the illusive Coors Field shutout was not to be. Did I mention that Buster Posey is a jerk? In what was a beautiful expose on how to hit, Buster Posey lined a Rex Brothers fastball up and away over the right field fence for an opposite field home run. It would be a little shaky but Rex Brothers wouldn't give up any more runs and the Rockies won 4-1.

I wrote in the Game Preview tonight:

The Rockies have a great opportunity in the schedule if they can swing some of these close losses into close wins with better timely hitting and a healthier, deeper bullpen, to put together a stretch that keeps them in contention until Troy Tulowitzki returns. If you can consistently beat your own division, especially in this year's NL West, you can remain a threat deep into the season. The Rockies can either hold it together and scratch out some much needed wins heading into the all-star break with some momentum and the confidence that comes with the return of a superstar.... Or they can fold and fall out of the conversation before they ever really got into it.

Wake up the bats.

It starts tonight.

Let us hope tonight was indeed the start. Great pitching. Timely (enough) hitting. And beating our division. I could get used to this.
