Saturday Pebble Report: Jose Briceno has career day

Doug Pensinger

Catcher Jose Briceno for the Grand Junction Rockies, had four extra base hits, including three HRs and seven RBIs. Meanwhile, Jeff Francis pitched well in Triple-A. And overall, the affiliates went 4-3.

Triple-A: Colorado Springs 4-2 W (44-36)

Jeff Francis started and pitched well on Friday night. Francis worked 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on just three hits. Edgmer Escalona on a rehab stint pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up just one base runner and no runs.

On offense, Ben Paulsen provided a go ahead two run blast in the 8th –his 11th of the year – and Tim Wheeler and Charlie Culberson each had multi-hit games. Ryan Wheeler had three hits.

Double A: Tulsa 3-0 W (38-39)

Tulsa got two first inning runs and that proved to be all they needed as they shutout San Antonio 3-0. Starting pitcher Colin McHugh, who came over in the Eric Young Jr. trade, was brilliant. McHugh worked seven scoreless innings with seven strike outs and he gave up just four hits. He didn’t walk a batter. Dan Houston and Cole White both pitched perfect innings to finish the shutout.

Kyle Parker was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Kiel Roling and Jayson Langfels each had an RBI. And despite a fairly quite offensive night Tulsa still held on to win.

Class A Advanced: Modesto 5-4 L (39-40)

Modesto lost 5-4 on Friday as starter Chris Jensen wasn’t quite sharp enough to get the job done. Jensen allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings of work, but Kraig Sitton took the loss after allowing the go ahead run to score in the seventh.

Brian Humphries and Ryan Casteel each had three hits -- including two doubles from Casteel -- to pace the Modesto offense. However, Modesto was 2-for-12 with RISP and could not push across the tying run.

Class A: Asheville 10-5 L (42-35)

Asheville starter Shane Broyles gave up four runs in five innings of work, but it was Roberto Padilla who really struggled. Padilla pitched just 2/3 of an inning in relief and surrendered five runs to take the loss.

Matt Wessinger hit his sixth HR of the year and Tom Murphy clubbed his 17th. Murphy also had three RBIs and continued his huge season.

Rookie: Tri-City 4-1 W (6-9)

Konner Wade pitched five solid innings allowing just one run and Tri-City relievers kept Vancouver off the board the rest of the way. Bruce Kern picked up the win with a scoreless sixth and Jonathan Vargas pitched the final three innings for the save.

Michael Benjamin had two hits and Michael Tauchman had three RBIs as both hit triples in aiding Tri-City’s winning cause. They only accumulated six hits, but they did enough to grab the win on Friday.

Rookie: DSL Rockies 2-1 L (14-10)

The DSL Rockies had four pitchers combine to allow just two runs to the DSL Mets, but the DSL Rockies only scored one run.

Omar Carrizales had the lone RBI.

Rookie: Grand Junction 12-3 W (7-2)

Grand Junction jumped all over Orem beating them 12-3 behind three home runs from Jose Briceno. Briceno was 4-for-5 with three HRs and seven RBIs. His other hit was a double. Briceno provided more than enough offense for the Grand Junction pitching staff.

Devin Burke picked up the win after tossing five scoreless innings in relief.
