Colorado Rockies Game 58 Preview: Tyler Chatwood vs. Bronson Arroyo

Jamie Sabau

Reason number 54,368 that 2013 is better than 2012: Last year when the Rockies went to Cincinnati, Christian Friedrich, Jamie Mayer, and Jeremy Guthrie started the three games.

The Rockies begin a series against one of the strongest opponents they will see all season. The Reds are already 13 games over .500 and they can beat you in just about any phase of the game. The only reason they don't hold at least a share of the division lead is because they are in the same division as the St. Louis Cardinals who have the best record in baseball.

Arroyo is now in his eighth season with the Reds. He was traded from Boston to Cincinnati before the 2006 season for Wily Mo Pena (OUCH!!!) and he's been one of the most consistent pitchers in all of baseball. He's never had a season where he's thrown few than 199 innings in Cincinnati and he's only posted an ERA over 4.00 once in the last five seasons. He's certainly beatable, but the Rockies will have to play well to get runs on the board.

If Chatwood keeps pitching the way he's pitched so far this season, the Rockies have a legitimate top of the rotation starter. He's been particularly excellent in his last four starts, holding opponents to a 1.14 ERA and a .546 OPS against despite a .313 BABIP. Chatwood continuing to pitch like this is almost more important than the result of tonight's game, because if there's any chance at all the he can do what he's done so far this season in large sample size, then the Rockies have struck gold.

Look at that OBP - LOOK AT THAT OBP. Votto's ability to work the count and draw walks is better than anybody's in the game right now and he's putting himself in position to be in the MVP discussion later this season.
