Wednesday Pebble Report: Roy Oswalt continues prep for MLB return; Eddie Butler K's 8 for Modesto

USA TODAY Sports

Colorado Springs sent the balls flying in Salt Lake City, and Asheville split a doubleheader on Tuesday. Find out more below.

Colorado Springs, W 7-0 (32-25)
Spring Mobile Ballpark was a launching pad for the Sky Sox on Tuesday afternoon, with four home runs coming in the fifth inning or later. Tyler Colvin (9) began the home run barrage in the fifth with a round-tripper off starter Barry Enright. Charlie Culberson (7) and Corey Dickerson (8) added solo shots in the seventh and eighth, while Drew Garcia added his first home run with a two-run blast in the ninth.

Josh Rutledge clubbed two doubles as part of his 3-for-4 afternoon. Charlie Blackmon collected two singles and drove in a run, but was also picked off twice.

Chris Volstad pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits. Nick Schmidt and Stephen Hensley finished the final two innings.

Tulsa, W 5-3 (26-30)
Roy Oswalt's night failed to start properly, as a leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly put the Drillers down a run just two batters in the game. But after that, Oswalt settled down and allowed just two solo home runs over his seven innings of work. He struck out five and had an 11 ground outs to two fly outs.

The Drillers' offense struck for four runs in the fourth inning, three on Dustin Garneau's third homer of the season. Kiel Roling added an insurance run with a sac fly in the fifth.

Modesto, W 5-3 (27-31)
Eddie Butler threw six shutout innings, scattered five hits, and struck out eight for his first win with Modesto. He put up an 8-1 GO-FO. The 2012 draftee now has a new goal for this season after already reaching his earlier one of pitching for Modesto (via Brian VanderBeek of the Modesto Bee):

"Now I have to extend the goal," he said. "Maybe I can get to Tulsa by the end of the season. If not, maybe I can start there next year."

Modesto scored its five runs over the third through fifth innings, including Trevor Story's two-out, two-run double in the fourth. Story, hitting second, went 2-for-5 and scored a run. Will Swanner was the only Modesto batter who went hitless, but he did not put up one of the 11 strikeouts by the offense.

Asheville, L 5-3 in 7 innings (30-25)
The Rome Braves got to starter Shane Broyles early, putting two on the board in the first and two more in the third. The latter two came on Trenton Moses first homer of the season. Francisco Sosa and Tom Murphy each hit their 11th home runs of the season in the loss.

Asheville, W 3-0 in 7 innings (31-25)
The Tourists bounced back in the second game of the doubleheader, led by Ryan Arrowood's four scoreless, hitless innings and seven strikeouts. Rome put its first hit on the board in the sixth inning when Blake Brown hit a groundball single to right field.

Asheville pulled off a double steal in the third inning when Julian Yan (10) took home plate and Juan Ciriaco (25) wound up on second. Unfortunately, Ciriaco was caught stealing third base to end the inning. Dillon Thomas singled a run in the fourth, and Rosell Herrera and Matt Argyropoulos hit doubles in the sixth to add the third run.

DSL Rockies, L 3-2 (1-2)
Seventeen-year-old lefty Hector Villarroel started his season off well enough with a fly out and strikeout in the first inning, but then a hit batsmen and two wild pitches put a runner at third base. Villarroel allowed his only hit and run of the game on a single to right field. He struck out five in four innings.

The Rockies tied the game in the sixth on a wild pitch, but Andres Matos allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Rockies threatened in the eighth with CF Omar Carrizales' single that scored one, but 2B Jonathon Piron was thrown out at home to end the play.
